The stunning performance of Les Illuminations by world-renowned soprano Sandrine Piau has been made possible thanks to the French label Naïve kindly releasing Sandrine from her exclusive recording contract for this CD. The ‘Clarinet Concerto’ was written for jazz star Benny Goodman, but Britten never completed it as the sketches were impounded by US Customs in 1941. It was Britten’s intention to resume work on the piece in 1943 but he never got round to it and so it remained a fragment, not performed until edited by Colin Matthews in 1990.
Britten intended the additional three songs recorded here-also setting Rimbaud-to be part of Les Illuminations. Sandrine Piau’s love affair with the music of Benjamin Britten blossomed when she was chosen to sing the role of Flora in Britten’s Turn of the Screw at Radio France.
In memoriam Dennis Brain for 4 horns, strings and tubular bells commemorates the great horn player for whom Britten wrote his Serenade for tenor, horn and strings. He died in a car crash in 1957. |

In the fall of 2008, I encountered a former classmate at a reunion. During an intriguing conversation he told me how he had fared, and what he was doing now. It turned out that he was in a managment position, managing a large group of employees, and that this could be a challenge at times. From my point of view as a conductor, I could well relate to the things he told me, and so I offered him some points of advice. He was surprised about my "fresh approach" to leadership and at the end of our conversation, he said: "I did not know you had studdied management." After this, and many similar encounters it became cleaer to me that a conductor, in addition to all his knowledge about music, must have skills to lead and inspire a large group of people.
In order to view my activities as a conductor from a leadership perspective, I contacted occupational psychologist Corry Keuning. With her, I analyzed the conducting tradeand my own experiences, and developed a lecture on the role of being "conductor of your business" as a source of inspiration for managers. In the spring of 2010, the activity of giving lectures got a new dimension through a partnership with Mr. Bart Voortman (President of Achmea GFS) and Etienne van Oosten (Boardroom Coach and Managing Director of United Talent). The Inspiration Orchestra was formed from a workshop at Achmea, allowing 50 managers to personally experience and discover the skills of a conductor. Each act of leadership is immediately transformed into sounds by the orchestra. By conducting the orchestar themselves, every manager gets a valuable perspective on his / her personal leadership style.
Besides the activities of the orchestra for the management workshops, a more musical expression of this dynamic and enthusiastic orchestra was inevitable. With great pleasure I have selected a series of old and brand new compositions and arrangements, and I feel fortunate I was able to produce this delightful CD with this great group of musicians.
Suspension Salsa This salsa-tinged composition is the first in the five-part suite Nomenclatura, once commissioned by the Customs Harmony. Besides the Caribbean rhythms and harmonies you hear technical passages in the wood and a trumpet improvisation by Suzan Veneman.
Wolf the Cat is a funky composition with the leading role is reserved for a modern horn section consist of the alto sax (Linda Arnold), tenor sax (Mark Lucassen) Trumpet (Libbe Oosterman) and trombone (Jurgen Wentzel). In addition to introducing the topic, they take a special spicy written on their behalf.
Fairwinds is a composition for jazz trio and orchestra. In this piece you will experience what a musical combo can be an enrichment. On the piano you hear Peter Kleine Schaars old classmate and dear friend Pieter van Santen. In more than ten years that she and the band "The Pretty Kiddies of Swing," he has played very completely idiosyncratic piano playing to the audience hanging on his fingers. Now many years later, his game or mature and sophisticated and he even received a warm applause during the filming of his fellow musicians. The jazz trio is further formed by either two wonderful musicians know Nico Steel on bass and Jan ter Maat on drums.
Rolling Stones Fantasy is a medley of four songs from this legendary band. You hear a surprising variety of instrumental sequential "Honky Tonk Woman ',' Angie ',' Brown Sugar 'and' Satisfaction '.
Lebuinus ex Daventria was commissioned by the Municipal Orchestra Lebuinus Deventer (NL). This film tells the story like composition of the Anglo-Saxon monk Lebuinus. Around the year 768 he founded a church in Deventer in order to convert the pagan Saxon population. Successive contrasting themes give a musical representation of the IJssel, the Saxons and Lebuïnus, the construction of the church and its destruction in the battle against the Saxons. Again it sounds "IJsseldalthema" in minor until a glorious finale all the themes together.
On the Street Where You Live is a great jazz standard from the Broadway composer Frederick Loewe, of course, his famous "My Fair Lady. The Inspiration Orchestra consists of musicians from various musical disciplines. In this package you will hear jazz saxophonist Mark Lucassen as a soloist on tenor sax.
It's So Nice to Meet You Too! is a solo feature for the entire clarinet group. Although most of them a classic with their education, they appear quite capable of this samba subtle way to interpret. The piano solo is again Pieter van Santen.
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is an arrangement of the great music of composer Ennio Morricone from the movie. Love, beauty, anger, despair, aggression, all the emotions through music knows Morricone to pass in review. An honor to be able to arrange his music, a tribute to this master by this CD.
The Groove Makers is a composition written for the "Verband Schweizer Blasmusik 'band music festival to celebrate 2008. The play was the compulsory work in the highest division and light music was as much a light entertainment ingredients contain. In short time, the orchestra required eight different "grooves" to be made.
Cargo Funk. This solid funk song comes also from the suite Norns Clara , being part three. The theme is sung by various instrumental groups and the entire wood brings a tough group to sing solos transcribed.
Inspire the Environment is the bonus track on this CD. One of the first collaboration with the rapper
Inspiration Ochestra entertainer O-Dog aka Mr. Positive Energy has led to this funky tune that we did not want to remember. It will not be the last production of inspirational, positive thinking and groundbreaking duo Peter & O-Dog! |
