Podkolekce: Orchestr Book of Hours combines ensemble and live electronics in a tribute to the glories of late medieval art; it uses electronic sound as (in the composer's words) "an extra colour … rather as gold-leaf might be applied in a Medieval manuscript".
This exploration of other times and sound-worlds is continued in Eden, Four American Choruses and Symphony (inspired by a painting of Lake Keitele in Finland); the disc is completed by Imagin'd Corners, an exuberant showpiece for five horns and orchestra.
Note on Recording (Track 9 "noise")
We would like to point out that the crackling noise present on track 2 of Book of Hours (track 9 of the album) is intentional. The composer's idea was to begin Part 2 of the work as a distorted version of Part 1 (track 8). Julian Anderson has explained to us that he is recreating - with electronics - the surface noise of LPs bought in Eastern Europe before the fall of the Berlin Wall (he has a strong interest in Eastern European music).

Podkolekce: Orchestr The conclusion to a three part-series of Igor Stravinsky‘s ballets from Sergei Diaghilev,s Ballet Russes, performed by BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Thierry Fischer. These recordings capture the excitement and vibrancy of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in live performance at their home of BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales.
Almost no musical work has had such a powerful influence or evoked as much controversy as Stravinsky's ballet score The Rite of Spring. The work's premiere on May 29, 1913, at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, was scandalous. In addition to the outrageous costumes, unusual choreography and bizarre story of pagan sacrifice, Stravinsky's musical innovations tested the patience of the audience to the fullest.
This disc also features Francis Poulenc‘s ballet Les Biches, premiered at the Ballet Russes in 1924. Originally commissioned by Diaghilev to write a piece based on Glazunov‘s Les Sylphides, Poulenc instead chose to base his piece on the paintings of Watteau that depicted Louis XV and various women in his "Parc aux biches" |

Podkolekce: Violin Walton’s Violin Concerto was composed during a trip to Villa Cimbrone in Italy, where he was bitten by a tarantula. This is reflected in the second movement, based on a ‘tarantella’. The piece has endured as one of his most popular works and is contrasted here with Barber’s Violin Concerto and famous Adagio for Strings. Born in Hertfordshire and graduating from the masterclass of Bela Katona at Trinity College of Music in 1982, Thomas Bowes joined the London Philharmonic in 1985 and a year later the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In 1987 he gave his London recital debut and between 1988 and 1992 was the founding leader of the Maggini String Quartet. In 1989 he was invited to become the leader of the London Mozart Players, London’s oldest established chamber orchestra, making his BBC Proms debut with them and Jane Glover in 1991. Still in great demand as a guest leader, Bowes has led many of the UK’s finest orchestras In demand as a guest leader, he has led many of the UK’s finest orchestras - including LSO, Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta, SCO and BBC Symphony Orchestra. The Malmö Opera Orchestra and Joseph Swensen join him for this recording. Swensen has served as Principal Conductor of Malmö Opera (Sweden) since 2007 and is Conductor Emeritus of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. |

Kolekce: JazzPodkolekce: Orchestr Released in April 2011, this re-mastered and re-packaged edition of the 1994 Penguin Cafe Orchestra album Union Cafe is now available on the new Penguin Cafe Label along with re-mastered editions of both Concert Program (PCO, 1995) and Piano Music (by Simon Jeffes, posthumous).
This record retains the intimacy and charm of all previous works, featuring a recording of the electric Aeolian harp on Cadbury Hill, Somerset, and a piece dedicated to the memory of John Cage recorded at the Real World recording week in 1992.
This is the re-mastered version of the original 1993 release.
The Penguin Cafe Orchestra is arguably the ultimate word of mouth group. But those who manage to stumble upon their richly melodic and utterly uplifting music invariably respond by asking, where has this music been all my life? quickly followed by, which album should I buy first? This month, three completely remastered gems from the Penguin Cafe Orchestra s discography make a welcome return to the active catalog and a new lineup of the group, Penguin Cafe, makes its debut. Union Cafe is a sprawling, diverse album that could be the Penguins White Album. |

Kolekce: JazzPodkolekce: Orchestr Penguin Cafe is a continuation by Arthur Jeffes of the ideas and music that his father, Simon Jeffes the English composer and musician, created with the enduring and ever-evolving concept of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
During the last two years they've been touring and playing the original music and adding a few new pieces as they emerged. This record is a collection of some of these pieces.
13 years after Simon Jeffes' death, his son, Arthur, has started playing his music again. Under the name Penguin Cafe, Arthur - along with a new group of musicians - is re-visiting his father's music and starting a new chapter in the story of this unique and strange creative world. Their sound is at once familiar and new, combining acoustic power and a beguiling, feisty charm.
The Penguin Cafe’s first year, 2009, saw them playing the Acoustic stage at Glastonbury, the main stages at Big Chill and Bestival, and selling out the Snape Prom among many other adventures. In 2010 one major highlight was playing at the Albert Hall in their own BBC Late Night Prom.
Over these first two years Arthur has been writing new material to compliment and respond to the old. A love-letter to the original music, ‘A Matter Of Life...’ is the result of this endeavour and is one of the most startling, beautiful and extraordinary records of the year. |
