Russian capricco

Russian capricco

Capriccio - is an Italian word, but it is easy to understand what it means. As practice shows, not only spoilt girls like to be capricious. Public in general get used to do it. And musicians are the best to soothe it. As a genre Capriccio came to Russia from Europe, exactly from Italy. But, in spite of its foreign birth Russian composers had assimilated it brilliantly. Today's public - in a way a «granddaughter» of the XIXth century indulges itself with an orchestra Capriccios by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Rubinstein. Russian classics were inspired by Italian and Spain themes, hence all compositions are penetrated with South spirit, and it could be seen in every bar and, even in the titles of capriccios. Only Rubinstein preferred a truly Russian capriccio, (that's its both title and essence) to Neapolitan's songs. This composition is outstanding, it is more lyric and vast scale, special Russian heartedness and temperament, as hot as Spanish, but closer to Russian mentality. As far as the form of capriccio is free (just as a feature of genre), sudden dramaturgic turns, rhythmic changes, condition changes and improvisation moments makes this music so powerful. Orchestral tutti and tender melodic parts shades each other and turn one ecstatic soul into a great delight. Burning, hot music of the South strikes fire from the strings, winds out from brass and wood bells, stuns with its brilliance and satisfies the most esthetic caprices of the most refine amateur of music.

Recorded live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 8, 9 November 2007 (Dukas/Van Keulen, Dalbavie, Messiaen, and 13, 14 June 2008 (Zuidam)

1 - 12: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, George Benjamin
13 - 15: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Ingo Metzmacher

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra focused extensively on Messiaen in its 2007-8 season. A major musical figure of the 20th-century, Messiaen (1908-1992) created an entirely unique musical oeuvre in which such divergent elements as divinity, as it relates to Catholicism and other doctrines, ornithology and the synaesthetic perception of sound as colour are all interconnected with his innovative rhythmic and harmonic musical language and tonal organisation. As a thinker and teacher, Messiaen carried out groundbreaking work in music during the second half of the century, but his work as a composer has remained unsurpassed. During this special season, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra programmed works not only by Messiaen himself, but also compositions by his musical predecessors, students and disciples, including three premières of works commissioned by the RCO: Geert van Keulen's orchestration of Paul Dukas's La plainte, au loin, du faune…, Marc-André Dalbavie's La source d'un regard (The Source of a Look) and Robert Zuidam's Adam Interludes.
With this second release in the Horizon CD series, dedicated to contemporary repertoire, RCO Live has captured this resounding homage to Olivier Messiaen in superb five-channel stereo.

Outstanding British-violinist Tamsin-Waley Cohen - described by the late Ruggiero Ricci following a masterclass as "the most exceptionally gifted young violinist I have ever encountered" - performs a fittingly prodigious work by Felix Mendelssohn.

The Violin Concerto in D minor was composed when Mendelssohn was just 13, and has remained popular with audiences the world over since its rediscovery in the middle of the 20th century by Yehudi Menuhin. The work is paired on this disc with Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin & Piano, where Waley-Cohen is joined by British pianist Huw Watkins, all alongside the enthusiastic accompaniment of the Orchestra of the Swan under David Curtis.

Barry, G: The One-Armed Pianist
Guy: Mr Babbage is coming to dinner
Mayo: Supermarine
Molitor, C: 2TwoLO
Musgrave: Power Play
Sawer: Coachman Chronos
Aurora Orchestra, Nicholas Collon

Objects at an Exhibition is a landmark commissioning project by NMC Recordings, in partnership with Aurora Orchestra and the Science Museum 'The most headline-grabbing of a series of recent announcements by NMC [that] aims to increase the audience for contemporary music ... this is an imaginative step on that worthwhile mission' Gramophone

Re-imagining Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition for the twenty-first century, these six new works, commissioned by NMC Recordings, are inspired by an object or space in London's world-renowned Science Museum. Each composer had free rein to pick an exhibit.

Thea Musgrave was attracted to the impressive Energy Hall with its C18th- C19th steam engines; the result is a playful work for woodwind, brass and strings that conveys the inner workings of the vast machines.

Christopher Mayo's piece for cello, double bass and four samplers is inspired by a slate statue of RJ Mitchell (the designer of the Spitfire) in the Flight Gallery. Samples of aeroplane engines grow from distant drone to hypnotic and cachophonous noise.

The enormous but 'melancholic' quality of 2LO (the first BBC transmitter) was what first caught Claudia Molitor's eye, and after doing some research she discovered that initially the transmission of music was prohibited and only speech was deemed acceptable. She uses BBC Sound Archive recordings from 2LO broadcasts in her piece.

David Sawer's work, with percussion - like strings, woodwind and fl ugel horn, conjures up vivid images of the 1830 York Mail Coach (displayed in the 'Making of the Modern World' gallery) speeding through the streets.

Gerald Barry chose an artificial arm with fingers stretched to play only octaves as inspiration - the prosthetic limb belonged to an unidentified female pianist and Barry's haunting, hypnotic composition continually repeats a two-note phrase which gradually evolves into octaves.

The graphic score hand-drawn and partially coloured by Barry Guy is a work of art in itself. Charles Babbage's Difference Engine and his drawings influenced Guy's piece which unsurprisingly, for a composer/bassist who has worked in free improv groups with Derek Bailey and Evan Parker, calls on spontaneity and improvisation from the 13 musicians of the Aurora Orchestra.
