Donizetti - Maria Stuarda (complete opera)

Donizetti - Maria Stuarda (complete opera)
ID: OPD7079
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Opera

Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) wrote three operas based on the lives of English Queens: Anna Bolena (1830), Maria Stuarda (1834), and Roberto Devereux (1837). None of them stick very close to history; each is treated in such a way as to heighten, exaggerate, or simply invent scenes and situations that might have taken place during the lives of these three fascinating monarchs. Maria Stuarda’s dramatic punch, particularly when the two starring women are front and center, is unique: rivalry is always the stuff of great drama, but rivalry between monarchs is, by definition, on an entirely different-and much higher-level.

Opera d’Oro presents Grand Tier, a deluxe edition of the most beloved Opera d’Oro performances with original artwork by Rafal Olbinski and re-mastered sound! Marie - Beverly Sills
Sulpice - Fernando Corena
Tonio - Grayson Hirst
La Marquise - Muriel Greenspon

The great Beverly Sills is heard in one of her most thrilling roles, the "Daughter of the Regiment" (one of Donizetti's finest comic operas), in this live performance of the original French version. Marie's second-act cabaletta, "Salut à la France," became almost a second national anthem, and is still a favorite choice for French theaters to present on Bastille Day as a gala event.

In 1969, Beverly Sills was at her vocal peak and, as she was particularly skillful in bringing comic roles to life, this is one of her all-time best performances. Legendary comic bass Fernando Corena is a first-class addition to the cast along with tenor Grayson Hirst, a fine artist little-known to recordings. Live performance, 1969.

The Elixir of Love was the result of a commission from a panicked Milanese impresario in 1832. He needed a new opera to replace one that had fallen through, and who better to go to than Donizetti, the man who was known to churn out an entirely new opera in two weeks? The premiere took place on schedule on May 12, 1832. L’elisir d’amore was an instant hit, running for thirty-two further consecutive performances. Well over a century and a half later, it is still going strong-still funny, still melodious, and still bringing down the house. Opera d’Oro’s Grand Tier series presents the best-selling Opera d’Oro titles with libretto and deluxe new packaging at mid-price! Grand Tier reissues the best titles with complete librettos in the original languages and fresh new English translations; stimulating essays on the operas by eminent writers on music; and striking artwork commissioned from Rafal Olbinski. Live performance, Florence, Italy, 1967.

Opera d’Oro’s Grand Tier series presents the best-selling Opera d’Oro titles with deluxe new packaging at mid-price! This series has been an unqualified success in the budget category. Now, in response to popular demand, the best titles are being reissued with complete librettos in the original languages and fresh new English translations, stimulating essays on the operas by eminent writers on music, and striking artwork commissioned from Rafal Olbinski. This is one of the finest recordings of Bellini’s last, and in some ways greatest, opera. Luciano Pavarotti seldom sang the role of Arturo, and this is one of his rare appearances on disc in this role. Most of the traditional cuts are restored in this recording. Mirella Freni is in her best form, and emotionally communicative. Riccardo Muti is one of the finest conductors of Italian opera in recent times. The premiere of I puritani in Paris in 1835 gave Bellini the greatest triumph of his career. The audience cheered to the extent that the composer later wrote “The French had all gone mad.” Live broadcast, Rome, July 8,1969.

Verdi - Nabucco (complete opera)

Verdi - Nabucco (complete opera)

Subcollection: Opera

Giangiacomo Guelfi , Elena Suliotis, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Gianni Raimondi, Gloria Lane, et al.: vocal soloists / La Scala Orchestra and Chorus /Gianandrea Gavazzeni: conductor

Produced in March 1842, Nabucco was Verdi’s first triumph with the public and (most) critics, establishing him as a great composer. The audience at the premiere went mad with enthusiasm and demanded an encore of the chorus “Va, pensiero.” “Va, pensiero” was musically beautiful, but as an expression of the longing of the Hebrew slaves for freedom it also struck a powerful political chord. Soon it was being sung in the streets, and many years later was reverently hymned at Verdi’s public funeral. For much of the twentieth century Nabucco was neglected as an immature early work by Verdi, but nowadays has taken its place again with great success as a repertory piece. Grand Tier presents the most popular titles from the budget Opera d’Oro catalogue at mid-price with complete newly translated librettos, stimulating essays by eminent music writers, and deluxe packaging with striking artwork commissioned from Rafal Olbinski. Live performance, Milan, 1966.

“The La Scala forces impress … Suliotis has left a legacy of recorded performances, and most persuasive are those captured live. This document of her La Scala debut stands among the greatest.” - Ira Siff

Leonie Rysanek, Bernd Aldenhoff, Annelies Kupper, Hermann Uhde, Ira Malaniuk, et al.: vocal soloists / Bavarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus / Joseph Keilberth: conductor

Leonie Rysanek was one of the greatest Wagner-and-Strauss sopranos of recent times and many of her recordings are considered definitive. Certainly that description applies to this legendary performance, which most critics agree has never been surpassed. This is the only available recording of Strauss’s 1933 revised version of the opera, which has some significant changes in Act II. All other recordings are of the 1928 original. Strauss himself preferred the revised version! Long one of Strauss’s least-performed operas, partly because of the extraordinary staging demands-including a singing seashell (!)-The Egyptian Helen has recently had a great surge in popularity, especially after an acclaimed Metropolitan Opera production. The collaboration of composer Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal was one of the greatest in music history, along with that of Mozart and Da Ponte, and out of their six collaborations, Hofmannsthal himself considered this his best text. Live performance, Monaco, August 10, 1956.
