Verdi - La traviata (complete opera)
ID: OPD7009
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Opera

Renata Scotto, José Carreras, Sesto Bruscantini, et al., vocal soloists/ Nino Verchi, conductor
Live performance,Tokyo, September 18, 1973. La traviata is among the most popular operas ever written. Today it is probably the most frequently performed of all 28 operas by Verdi.
Based on one of the greatest love stories - La Dame aux Camélias, by Alexander Dumas, Jr., usually called in English simply Camille.
Digitally remastered and beautifully packaged with full, newly translated libretto.
Renata Scotto, one of the great dramatic sopranos of the past generation, made her debut in this very role at age 18. This performance showcases both the beauty of her voice and her intense identification with the character.
José Carreras is heard here at his youthful best, when many considered his to be the most beautiful tenor voice in the world.
Baritone Sesto Bruscantini was called by the New Grove Dictionary of Opera “one of the finest Italian singers of the second half of [the 20th] century.” His repertoire encompassed over 130 roles and the elder Germont in Traviata was among his very best.
“This is an epic performance.” - Robert Levine Ilustration © Rafal Olbinski

Fiorenza Cossotto, Antonietta Pastori, Renato Cavarini, Ivo Vinco, et al., vocal soloists/RAI Orchestra & Chorus, Rome/Lorin Maazel, conductor
Bellini’s opera version of the Romeo and Juliet story is one of his finest early works, the first to unequivocally display his mature style. It had a fully successful early run, although it has suffered much neglect in subsequent years, in modern times mostly because the part of Romeo is written for a mezzo-soprano. The opera is now customarily given in the original voice ranges, and the present recording is of one of the first modern performances to do so. Live performance, Rome, October 23, 1958.
“Cossotto is in splendid form…she commands every scene in which she appears…” - FANFARE
“…conducted with tremendous energy and drama by the then 27-year-old Lorin Maazel…Cossotto was then in such glorious voice that she arrests one’s attention at each of her appearances…Pastori…is an affecting heroine...” - GRAMOPHONE
"This live performance…is of particular interest to fans of mezzo Fiorenza Cossotto, here caught early in her career, before the voice had grown into the dramatic, Verdian instrument we’re familiar with. She sings Romeo well, with a fine, boyish tone. Otherwise unknown soprano Antonietta Pastori is a lovely Giulietta, singing with small, well-focused, pretty tone. Similarly not-famous Renato Gavarini is a very good Tebaldo - rhythmically accurate and exhibiting a good-sized, tonally pleasant tenor…its interesting to note what fine singers were floating around Italy in the 1950s; today they might be stars.” - ROBERT LEVINE, CLASSICSTODAY Ilustration © Rafal Olbinski

Birgit Nilsson, Franco Corelli, Galina Vishnevskaya, Nicola Zaccaria, Renato Capecchi, et al., vocal soloists/La Scala Orchestra & Chorus, Milan/Gianandrea Gavazzeni, conductor

Live performance, Milan, 1964.

Unfinished at the composer's death, and long one of Puccini's more neglected works, Turandot is today one of his most popular operas. The tenor aria "Nessun dorma" made the pop charts a few years ago!

Soprano Birgit Nilsson and tenor Franco Corelli are the all-time most famous duo in the lead roles of this opera, singing at La Scala, Milan in the 1960s. They are available on a more expensive studio recording on another label, but most opera fans will tell you this live performance is even better! Digitally remastered from the original excellent monophonic recording.

"...What a show it is! We get Franco Corelli and Birgit Nilsson at their most enflamed and potent, with the ultra-feminine and fascinating Galina Vishnevskaya as Liu. The Ping-Pang-Pong trio is especially mellifluous, and Nicola Zaccaria makes the most of Timur's music and character. The orchestra plays well and in Gianandrea Gavazzeni’s hands, the score really percolates." - Robert Levine, ClassicsToday.com

Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Piero Cappucilli, et al., vocal soloists/Orchestra & Chorus of Teatro alla Scala/ Carlos Kleiber, conductor
Look again, you are not dreaming. This DREAM CAST in a 1976 recording of Otello is now available for the first time in digital remastering at mid-price with complete libretto and attractive packaging, with a special essay on the performance by Andrew Farach-Colton.
This is one of the finest Otello recordings at any price! Every recording conducted by Carlos Kleiber is an event. This brilliant and reclusive conductor has made only a few recordings, all considered excellent, and some sublime: his readings of Beethoven's 5th and 7th symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic are widely considered the best ever made in the history of the gramophone.
The three principals in this recording-Domingo (tenor), Freni (soprano) and Cappuccilli (baritone)-are all superstars, and were at the top of their form when this thrilling recording was made.
Live performance, Milan, December 7, 1976.
"Not even Toscanini managed to inspire and sustain music-making of such blistering intensity." - Andrew Farach-Colton Ilustration © Rafal Olbinski

"Except for sales in the Czech Republic"

Maria Callas, Mario del Monaco, Ebe Stignani, et al., vocal soloists/RAI Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Rome/Tullio Serafin, conductor

It's tempting to claim that "Callas says it all," but that wouldn't be true. We don't have to explain that Maria Callas is a legend and sells millions of CDs with her name alone; we may need to remind that sometimes she is the only great singer in a cast-though not this time. The rest of the singers here are major artists too, with a great conductor, second only to Toscanini among Italian opera conductors, making this Norma extra-extra great.

Newly designed packaging, including complete libretto, in a fresh new translation, with a special essay on the performance by Robert Levine. Live performance, June 29, 1955.

Next to the DVD this package also contains two CD’s with the complete opera “La Bohème”
Czech composer Bedrich Smetana is best known for his orchestral cycle My Country (Ma Vlast) featuring the ever-popular Moldau, and his opera The Bartered Bride. It is less known that the larger part of his output is written for piano solo. Smetana was a well known pianist of no mean powers. One of the first “Nationalistic” composers, he wrote many Polkas, the national dance of his homeland. These, often quite substantial, works are the Czech equivalent of Chopin’s Polonaises, or Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies.
This 2-CD set features the Complete Czech Dances (Book I and II), Souvenirs de Boheme, a selections from his beautiful cycle Dreams, and a few remarkable separate pieces.
Played with great understanding of the idiom by Czech pianist Antonin Kubalek, and Peter Schmalfuss.
