Collection: Renaissance Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble Late Renaissance and early Baroque
Little is known about one of the most productive of Italian musicians, Adriano Banchieri. Relegated to a marginal sector of Renaissance history, still defined by madrigals, Banchieri lived in the most extraordinary innovative period of Italian 'harmonic' music: we find clear signs of a new 17th-Century sensibility in adaptation, or rather in making the word serve representational needs, in the use of the basso concertante and in the extensive use of continuo. The two works presented on this CD represent the chronological heart of Banchieri’s most typical production and may be appreciated in modern recordings for the first time: this is an ambitious project to shed light on Italian 'minor' musical history of the end of the 16th century. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble In 2008 Bussotti visited Japan and gave seminars and composition lessons, also presenting an exhibition of his most significant pittografie (scores, drawings) at the Italian Culture Institute of Tokyo. These live recordings bear witness to the concerts that were organised in his honour: in which performances of 'indeterminate' or 'graphic' scores (typical of Bussotti) prevailed. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble The score of Anarca is the fruit of Battistelli's great passion for the writings of Ernst Jünger. Powerfully struck by the novel On the Marble Cliffs, the composer resolved to transform the book into an opera. Originally the work was supposed to be staged in Frankfurt but this project was put aside out of concern for the political ramifications of the adaptation of a writer that had been so close to the Nazi ideology. Here Anarca is proposed with two other pieces performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai. The series Ricordi Oggi is enriched by Giorgio Battistelli's presence, now one of the most appreciated Italian composers. |

3 - 8 Richard Watkins, horn / Goldberg Ensemble - Malcolm Layfield, conductor
Richard Watkins is at the forefront of promoting contemporary music for the horn. He has given premières of concertos by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Nigel Osborne, Magnus Lindberg, Dominic Muldowney, Nicola LeFanu, and Colin and David Matthews.
The Goldberg Ensemble is committed to performing and commissioning new music, particularly by British composers.
This new recording features a collection of works for string ensemble commissioned by the Goldberg Ensemble including Roger Marsh's haunting Canto 1, based on Dante's Paradiso; Nicola Lefanu's lyrical Amores for horn and string ensemble; Anthony Gilbert's Palace of the Winds inspired by the elaborately ornate Hawa Mahal palace in Jaipur and Geoffrey Poole's Crossing Ohashi Bridge, an abstract work inspired by chaos mathematics such as Fractals, Mandelbrot sets, and named after the Hiroshige painting Sudden shower over Shin-Ôhashi bridge, as featured on the front cover of this disc. |

Subcollection: Historical Instruments Based in Tokyo, the ensemble "La Fontaine" was founded in l996. Six months after its first concert in October 1996, the ensemble was a prizewinner at the Yamanashi/Tokyo Early Music Competition. In 1998 they participated in the York Early Music Festival in Britain. Two years later, they performed at the International Early Music competition in Bruges, where their performance won the second prize, the audience prize, and an invitation by Philip Pickett to participate in the 2001 Early Music Festival at London's South Bank Centre.
They perform regularly in major cities throughout Japan, including the prestigeous Casals Hall in Tokyo. They have been broadcast several times on Japanese Radio (NHK-FM). This is their second CD.
The CD booklet contains an article (in English, French and German) by Stephen Pettit on the lives of the composers, and also on the social and economic circumstances in which the pieces were written, and for whom. There are more details on the instruments and the players. |
