Morgan Hayes won the Guildhall School of Music & Drama's coveted Lutoslawski Prize in 1995; he subsequently studied with Michael Finnissy, Simon Bainbridge and Robert Saxton.
This is Morgan's first full-length CD.
Port Rhombus is a transcription of a work by drum & bass/electronica artist Squarepusher who appears on Warp Records.

Included are his transcription of Squarepusher's Port Rhombus, commissioned for the South Bank Centre's 2003 Ether Festival, which captures the beauty and fragility of this experimental drum'n'bass work from 1996; Lucky Speech for solo violin, inspired by a character from Beckett’s Waiting for Godot; a collection of piano miniatures Strides Book I & II; and the dramatic solo piano work Puppet Theatre, which refers to the title of the painting by Paul Klee, featured on the front cover of this CD. |

Diese CD stellt Musik aus dem Gebiet des einstmals wichtigen und einflussreichen Oberlausitzer Bundes der Städte Kamenz, Bautzen, Löbau, Görlitz, Zittau und Lauban vor. Hier wirkten Komponisten wie Johann Pezelius, Johann Krieger und Andreas Hammerschmidt, aber auch der aus Görlitz gebürtige Meistersinger Adam Puschmann. Intraden und Sarabanden für Zinken und Posaunen, weltliche Arien sowie Kirchenkantaten und mehrchörige geistliche Konzerte in großer Besetzung zeigen ein musikalisch weitgefächertes Bild dieser Landschaft. A lyrical collection of chamber works for tenor and guitar - Sometime I Sing unites Gramophone award-winning tenor Mark Padmore with Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanski in settings of texts by Thomas Wyatt, Vikram Seth, John Donne and Edward Thomas by the composer Alec Roth.
Roth is a UK-based composer who works across a wide range of musical genres, including stage works, vocal, choral, orchestral, instrumental, and Javanese gamelan - his former posts include Founder/Director of the Royal Festival Hall Gamelan Programme and Southbank Gamelan Players; Music Director of the Baylis Programme, English National Opera; and Associate Composer, Opera North. |

The origins of the chaconne as a dance melody can be traced to Latin America.
Der Ursprung der Chaconne als Tanzlied liegt in Lateinamerika. Sowohl humoristischen als auch zotigen Charakters wird die Chaconne von Gitarre und Percussion begleitet. Die meisten der überlieferten Texte enthalten im Refrain das Wort "chacona" und den Begriff "vida bona" (=gutes Leben). Rasch erfolgte die Verbreitung in Spanien und Italien.
Alessandro Piccinini, ein Zeitgenosse Monteverdis und Frescobaldis, gibt 1623 nach langer Vorbereitung sein erstes Werk "Intavolatura di Liuto et di Chitarrone, libro primo" heraus. Dieses Buch enthält ein detailliertes Vorwort mit Hinweisen zur Spieltechnik, den Instrumenten und der Interpretation, sowie diverse Stücke wie Chiacconen, Toccaten, Gagliarden und Correnten. In den beiden Lautenbüchern Piccininis lassen sich keine Noten für die Begleitung finden. Der Lautenist Axel Wolf ergänzte sie und besetzte das Continuo entsprechend dem Charakter der Stücke: Violone und Truhenorgel liefern das klangvolle Fundament, über dem sich die Laute in einer Toccata frei bewegt und in den Chiacconen, Gagliarden und Correnten akzentuieren Barockgitarre und Percussion wirkungsvoll die rhythmische Komponente der Stücke. |

The recording is entirely devoted to French Baroque composer Jean-Féry Rebel and comprises some of his most admirable ballet music, along with the enigmatic suite Les Elemens.
The orchestra was awarded two Opus Prizes in January 2007 (voted by the Conseil québécois de la musique) for this program, which was featured in Arion’s 2006 activities. One Prize was for the ‘Concert of the Year in Montreal’ and the other for the ‘Concert of the Year, Music of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque eras’.
