SIMEON PIRONKOV - COMPOSITIONS

SIMEON PIRONKOV - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD160
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

Simeon Pironkov ranks among the most famous Bulgarian composers from the second half of the 20th century. His works in various genres are performed both at home and at prestigious musical festivals for contemporary music in Berlin, Warsaw, Zagreb, Budapest, etc. He is the author of compositions commissioned by full orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo performers. Pironkov's style is characterised by exquisitely coloured melody, flexibility of metre and rhythm influenced by the Bulgarian folk music, delicacy of orchestration and emotional variety, being the result of the sensitivity and richness of his inner world. The works selected for this release represent the evolution of the composer's style. Requiem for an Unknown Young Man is a landmark work in his creative biography, extensively performed by the Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble. The solo cello sonata Entrata e capriccio is an original virtuoso improvisation with an excellent form, and the music of String Quartet No. 3 (premiered in 1986 in Berlin) is reserved, now tender, now melancholic, cut through by metro-rhythmical and melancholic accents. Most characteristic is Kammersinfonie for 11 soloists, composed in the USA, an expression of maturity and creative imagination.

Performed by: String Quartet: N. Jeleva (violin), N. Gagov (violin), O. Stanchev (viola), K. Bespalov (cello) [1] - [3]; Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble conductor Plamen Djouroff [4]; Anatoli Krastev (cello) [5] - [6]; conductor Simeon Pironkov - junior [7] - [11]

American composer Victoria Bond, whose stage music and chamber works enjoy great popularity in the USA, is also famous as conductor in her home country, Europe and Asia. The CD includes seven of her compositions each of which highlights various aspects of her talent. Bond is very good at logically structuring the small forms imbuing them at the same time with emotionality and musical ideas. For example, the wonderful piece Batucada, variations on a Brazilian samba for piano, or Sonata for Cello and Piano, the expressive means of which have originated from some techniques characteristic of 20th century music like Schoenberg's serial technique. Weddings & Bar Mitzvahs, built on a Jewish folk song with a beautiful melody is also an excellent concert piece. The Dreams of Flying demonstrates the composer's skill in the combination of timbres and the development of basic motifs, in interweaving the voices.

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 3

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 3
ID: GD253
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

The third CD from the CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS series presents six creative artists from the middle generation, all of whom have entered their names in the Bulgarian culture through vivid artistic achievements. This is a selection of chamber-instrumental opuses of non-traditional sounding and original compositional invention. Velislav Zaimov, famous for his symphonic works, is featured with his magnificent Largo for 12 violoncellos inspired and dedicated to the work of Prof. Zdravko Yordanov, the great Bulgarian cellist. Julia Tsenova, whose name has been well-established in the country's musical life for two decades now and whose works are marked by interesting and unusual ideas, has chosen her "П = 3.14" on lyrics by actress Mara Chapanova, herself a champion of new Bulgarian and world music. The poet's symbols and metaphors, the specific imagery leading to antiquity and the female sensitivity of the verses have been masterfully rendered in the vocal and orchestral parts of the piece. Andrian Pervazov has written a large-scope cycle for three flutes and tape. Inspired by the Sumerian epoch, the work is entitled Ziggurat or Sumerian Temple Music from the Age before the Flood and interweaves sonorousness, primitivism, spoken speech and recitation, all of which create a unique sound atmosphere. Artin Poturlian and Bojidar Petkov are represented by their works for two pianos, Fantasia "Worlds" and Toccata, respectively, and Yassen Vodenitcharov, by his Two Bagatelles for piano, clarinet and percussion. The works in the CD are interpreted by prominent Bulgarian performers united by the common idea of establishing and promoting the contemporary Bulgarian music.

Plamen Djouroff, conductor

Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1962. Since its foundation 40 years ago it has been conducted by Vassil Kazandjiev (1964-1978), Emil Tabakov (1979-1988) and its present conductor - Plamen Djouroff, who has been connected with the work of the ensemble since 1988. Sofia Soloists has preserved throughout the years its image of an elite formation with an exceptionally rich repertoire from the 16-20th centuries, including works by Bulgarian composers. The present release features four pieces composed during the 1970s-1990s. Symphony No 4 by Lyubomir Pipkov (1904-1974) was written in the last years of the composer's life (1970). For this composition his choice fell on the chamber expression of the string orchestra. Meditations by Lazar Nikolov (b. 1922) was written for string quartet (1970) and a year later it was revised for string orchestra. Microsymphony (1922) by Dimitar Tapkoff (b. 1929) brings out the most concentrated expression of the symphonic model. The work is dedicated to Arthur Honegger and the use of his initials A, H has not only tonal and constructive role but also introduces semantically the question of tradition and stability of musical values. Requiem for an Unknown Young Man for 13 stringed instruments (1968) by Simeon Pironkov (1927-1999) combines the European liturgical choral tradition and the composition and technical devices of aleatory music. Sofia Soloists' conductor, Plamen Djouroff (b. 1949), graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia. He furthered his studies in conducting at the Vienna Academy of Music under Karl Osterreicher. Besides being conductor of Sofia Soloists, Mr. Djouroff is also one of the outstanding Bulgarian composers. His works have been performed and released in Bulgaria and abroad.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Wind Orchestra

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Wind Orchestra
ID: GD299
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Brass Collection
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

After featuring the tambura, zourna and gaida instruments (GD 278, GD 276, GD 106), the series continues with presenting horos and ruchenitsa for wind orchestra. Having originated after the liberation of the Bulgarian people from the rule of the Ottoman Empire (1878), today they have become a necessary part of all festive celebrations in Bulgaria.
The intense development of music and performance art during the first years of independence in Bulgaria lead to the creation of professional symphonic, opera and chamber ensembles. Together with them the first military wind orchestras were formed. Their repertoire consists of marches, polkas, overtures, etc., as well as horo music and medleys of folk songs. A large number of composers at that time wrote folk-based music for wind orchestras. The most talented composer of such music was Diko Iliev. After his participation in the Balkan War and the First World War, he began composing horos, which are still being loved by the Bulgarian people. From 1931 Diko Iliev played the baritone in the newly-founded wind orchestra in Oryahovo and thus he put the beginning of one of his most intense periods of creative activity. Iliev had the happy fate to become an inseparable part of the Bulgarian urban musical folklore. After him other well-trained musicians continued this trend. Today the wind orchestra is an intrinsic part of the Bulgarian folk music culture.
