Carlo Alessandro LANDINI (1954)
Two More Steps Towards Uncertainty (2007) for symphonic orchestra
Ecco il giorno (1998) for 4 female voices and 13 performers
Coming to Life. Generation, Transition, Interlocking of Phases (2006 - rev. 2009) for 7 performers
Limen (2010) for 16 string instruments
From the liner notes by Ettore Napoli: “This Cd contains works written by Carlo Alessandro Landini (1954) for orchestra and is being released seven years after the previous one published by Tactus (TC951201), a Cd which already included some of the most interesting pages of contemporary Italian music, among the few capable of standing up to the quality of coeval international production. In fact, it is not by chance that this Milanese composer ends up being more appreciated abroad than he is in Italy, as validated - citing in random order - by the “Fulbright Award” granted by the United States Department of Education in 1981 and the numerous prizes he was later on awarded: among many others, the Warsaw’s “K. Serocki” (2002 and again 2004) Competition, the renowned “W. Lutosławski” Prize (2008) and the Saint Petersburg’s “S. Prokof ’ev” International Contest (2012). In November 2013 Landini represented Italy as the sole Italian participant in the World New Music Days held in Vienna and Bratislava by the ISCM. A complementary aspect of Landini’s internationalism is exemplified by his teaching in some of the most prestigious American Universities (University of California at San Diego, New York State University at Buffalo, Eastman School of Music, Columbia University in New York, University of Maryland) as well as throughout Europe, including the Musikhochschule in Trossingen (Germany) and Hamu in Prague (Czech Republic). The four works presented in this Cd verify the widely reaching cultural breeze spread by Landini’s music [...]” |

The Nash Ensemble
Richard Watkins is one of the most sought-after horn players of his generation. He was Principal Horn of the Philharmonia Orchestra for twelve years, and is currently a member of the Nash Ensemble and a founder member of London Winds. Closely associated with promoting contemporary music for the horn, Richard Watkins has given premieres of concertos by Maxwell-Davies, Osborne, Lindberg, Muldowney, Lefanu, and Colin and David Matthews.
The title work on this album is Peter Maxwell Davies' solo horn piece Sea Eagle (1982). It was initially considered by many to be impossible to play but is now regarded as an essential part of the horn repertoire and is even a set-piece for the prestigious Munich Horn Competition.
Richard is joined on this recording by a stellar line-up of chamber musicians, including Paul Watkins and Huw Watkins for an unusual combination of horn, cello and piano (C Matthews & Holloway), and tenor Mark Padmore to present the unmistakable soundworld of Gerald Barry. His setting of Lewis Carroll’s famous poem Jabberwocky - which is first sung in French, with expressive legato phrases, and then repeated more forcefully in German - features some delightfully unconventional horn writing. |

Following their acclaimed debut recording (Clarion Call - RES10127), the Berkeley Ensemble returns with a programme of chamber works by the British composer Lennox Berkeley, one of the two composers (father and son) after whom the group gets its name.
Featuring a number of world premiere recordings, the ensemble presents a selection of works that covers most of Berkeley’s creative life from the early Francophile clarinet Sonatine written in Paris while a student of Nadia Boulanger to the inventive Introduction and Allegro for double bass and piano. Also featured are the Three solo pieces for viola and the large scale String Trio Op. 19 and Sextet, Op. 47 for clarinet, horn and string quartet, and the emotive miniature In Memoriam Igor Stravinsky. |
