Podkolekce: Klavír Gian Carlo Menotti passed away recently - in 2007 - and had been a force in musical life for over half a century. Born in Italy, he became a friend of Samuel Barber while studying, and it was largely this friendship which encouraged him to move to the USA. Though his home was in the USA, he always considered himself to be an Italian composer.
Menotti had great success with several operas, establishing himself as a leading opera composer of the post-war period. There is a natural, innate lyricism to his musical language; an unabashed deployment of attractive melodies, which allows him to communicate directly to a large audience who, in general, share his musical taste, loving the things he loved.
Menotti's instrumental and vocal concert music has not attracted as much attention as his stage works, but his cantatas, concertos, song-cycles and other works all share the same musical virtues and attractiveness, creating vivid and compelling musical images, and benefitting from his instinctive sense of drama.
RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet:
Winner of the 1988 London International String Quartet Competition and now in its twenty-third concert season, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet is one of Europe’s most successful quartets, internationally recognised for its beauty of sound, clarity of texture and integrity of interpretation within an unusually wide and varied range of repertoire. Appointed Resident Quartet to RTÉ in 1986 and with almost 700 performances in Ireland to date, the group has dedicated itself to bringing the wonders of the string-quartet repertoire to audiences throughout the country. At the same time they have built a thriving international career, with regular tours taking them throughout Europe and the USA.

Kolekce: Brass CollectionPodkolekce: Quartet In the third CD of Mardi Brass’ epic four-CD journey from the Renaissance to the present day (Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue), the group presents a cornucopia of exciting original compositions, and imaginative arrangements by members of the group, each of which is a premiere recording.
Covering a wide range of musical styles, the unifying feature is that the composers
have borrowed thematic material - and inspiration - from one source and reinterpreted it using their own unique voices. Transcending mere arrangement or pastiche, the composers demonstrate the art of musical disguise and metamorphosis, seamlessly moulding and fusing material from one genre to another. |

Kolekce: Chamber MusicPodkolekce: Quartet Following the success of their two previous CDs on LIR, “The Age of Elegance” and “Views of Vienna”, the Galeazzi Ensemble continue their exploration of the classical flute quartet. J.A.Schmittbauer, about whom little is known, cleverly published his quartet under the name of his more prolific colleague, Haydn, to ensure his better sales. It is teamed on this CD with 2 of Haydn’s own quartets, not originally written for flute, but well-suited to the instrument in the flexible classical tradition, and one of his string trios.
The Galeazzi Ensemble was formed in 1995 in order to explore Classical and Early Romantic chamber music using instruments of the period and, as well as performing works from the standard repertoire, it aims to introduce many neglected works to today’s audiences. The group takes its name from the composer and theorist Francesco Galeazzi (1758-1818). Better known today for his theoretical writings, Galeazzi’s most influential work was a two volumed treatise entitled Elementi teorico-pratici di musica (1791-6). |
