Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Vocal and Piano Bennett is renowned for his film scores and his jazz performance as much as for his challenging concert works.
His film music includes scores for Far from the Madding Crowd, Murder on the Orient Express and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Richard Rodney Bennett has long had a private passion for making collages (and knitting!) and the cover image on this CD is one of his creations, currently displayed at an exhibition of his work in Chelsea.
Born in Broadstairs, Kent, in 1936, he has lived in New York City since 1979. Richard Rodney Bennett received a CBE in 1977, and was knighted in 1998. Bennett studied with Pierre Boulez in Paris.
This new recording spans five decades of Bennett’s song-writing, cherry-picking some of his most accessible and lyrical pieces, from the melodic Songs Before Sleep, performed by Roderick Williams, to the 1920s dance rhythms of A History of the Thé Dansant, the dramatic and rarely-performed Tom O'Bedlam's Song for tenor and cello (written for Peter Pears) and the enchanting A Garland for Marjory Fleming.
A wonderful recording, stunningly performed by a collection of internationally acclaimed soloists. |

Collection: World Premiere Recording Subcollection: Vocal and Piano Sara Mingardo is one of the few rare authentic contralto voices on today’s music scene, and last year she won the prestigious Premio Abbiati 2010 as ‘Best Italian Singer’. Here she wonderfully interprets, in a thrilling World Première Recording, lyrical pieces for voice and piano by Guido Alberto Fano, with Aldo Orvieto at the piano.
G. A. Fano was born in Padua in 1875 and he died exactly 50 years ago in a small town in Friuli. His approach to song seems akin to that of Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968), who spoke of a new interest among Italian composers for vocal chamber music: “Incipit vita nova”, he proclaimed, with Dantesque tones he greeted the salvation of the genre from the monopoly enjoyed by the previous generation, first and foremost, the huge output of Abruzzo-born Francesco Tosti. A “new life” on which Pizzetti embarked by shedding the yolk of pleasant melody and conventional cadential formulae. These little known but highly attractive lyrical pieces, composed on immortal masterpieces by two great Italian poets, Giosuè Carducci (1835-1907) and Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912), clearly show Fano’s distance from the precepts of late 19th-century drawing-room song. |

Cantabile (also known as ‘The London Quartet’) have been wowing audiences across the world since the 1980s with their shows that blend performance flair, comic timing and a deep passion for high-quality vocal music.
This album is an eclectic tribute to the very British obsession that is cricket, bringing together works from the turn of the century (school songs from Harrow and Eton) to the present day (Jiggery Pokery from the 2009 Ivor Novello nominated album The Duckworth-Lewis Method) - as well as from the well-known (Roy Harper’s When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease) to the obscure (The Summer Game, from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s little-known musical Cricket, commissioned for the Queen’s 60th Birthday). Featuring guest performances from the likes of Richard Stilgoe, Rory Bremner and Tim Rice, this album should prove a must-buy for cricket- and music-fans alike. |
