Collection: Baroque Subcollection: Organ David Goode performs a grand selection of some of Bach’s best organ works - including the famed Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor - providing modern listeners with a unique chance to hear Bach’s music as congregations of that period may have done.
The Gottfried Silbermann organ of Freiberg cathedral is one of a handful of such 18th-century instruments (built during Bach’s lifetime) to have remained largely unmodified to this day. Bach’s work as an organ inspector shows that he tested and inaugurated a number of Silbermann’s organs in Germany and, although there is no record that he played this instrument, its sound is undoubtedly one that Bach would have recognised and composed for. |

Subcollection: Organ The Art of the Fugue marks a monument of compositional mastery. For Peter Kofler, the priorities are the sound of the music and its sensual vitality. He performs on a harpsichord made by Karl August Gräbner in Dresden in 1782. |

Collection: Baroque Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck is one of the principal composers in the 16th- and 17th-century Holland. As far as we know, Sweelinck only left Holland on one time. Nevertheless his works show Italien/Venetian influences, English/virginalist elements and knowledge of spanish composers. The growing cultural importance of Amsterdam in Sweelinck´s day probalbly explain his knowledge of contemporary European music. At the beginning of the 17th century, many organists travelled not only from Germany but also Poland and Sweden to Amsterdam to study under the famous Sweelinck. Later his Hamburg pupils Heinrich Scheidemann and Jacob Praetorius founded a sort of ‘Sweelinck outpost’ in Hamburg. They passed on their pupils what they have learned in Amsterdam. Léon Berben plays the pieces of Sweelincks und his pupils brilliantly at St. Jaque’s Church in Liège. This organ was reconstructed in the style of the late 16th century, following Sweelinck´s large organ in Amsterdam. RK 2205 | edition raumklang | Total: 67:32 |

Subcollection: Voices The program of this CD is lent character by the juxtaposition of two rather different types of sacred music, namely the “Lamentatio” employed in the Latin (Catholic) liturgy and the vernacular (Protestant) sacred song. |

Subcollection: Organ Sebastian Knebel plays on the seventeenth-century Coswig organ of the beautiful Alte Kirche. Since this is the only surviving organ of its type Knebel has chosen a programme of music written in the period the organ was built. This is a well thought out programme which explores the tonal nuances of the restored Coswig organ and rounds off with selected pieces for harpsichord. |
