Music for organ from the Tower of London - Colm Carey

Music for organ from the Tower of London - Colm Carey
ID: LIR004
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Organ Collection
Subcollection: Organ

Popular organ repertoire on the new Letourneau organ in the chapel at the Tower of London. This is the first solo CD on the newly restored organ.

The present organ case in the Tower of London dates from 1699 when it was built under royal warrant by Bernhardt Schmidt for the Banqueting House, Whitehall. It was relocated several times, eventually coming to rest at the Tower’s chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. Over the following century it was rebuilt and enlarged on several occasions, and by 1999 this resulted in an organ some three times larger than that for which the original case had been designed. During the installation of this new organ by the Canadian organ builder Fernand Létourneau, the case was meticulously restored to its original dimensions and many decorative details were made to replace those lost over the centuries.

To show off this remarkable new instrument on its first commercial solo recording, Colm Carey has put together a wonderfully varied and attractive programme, first and foremost chosen to suit to the instrument’s character, but representing the best of British organ music as befits its location, and spanning 5 centuries.

A leading concert organist of the younger generation, Colm Carey offers a blend of fresh invention and technical finesse, establishing him as a remarkable and distinctive performer. Born in Ireland, Carey studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Nicholas Danby and David Titterington, where he read for a University of London BMus. He also gained the Dip.RAM, the Academy’s highest performance award, and later became Meaker Fellow. As winner of the prestigious Julius Isserlis Scholarship, he went on to study at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève with Lionel Rogg, where he won the ‘Premier Prix de Virtuosité avec Distinction’ on completion of his course. He subsequently came third and won the Audience Prize at the St. Albans International Competition.
Since then Colm has performed in France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, Canada, the USA, Australia and throughout Britain and Ireland. His repertoire embraces all the major traditions, from the French Classical School and the German Baroque to the great symphonic tradition of the nineteenth century, and as a keen exponent of contemporary music he has given first performances of new works by Lionel Rogg, Roderick Williams, Ruth Byrchmore and Andrew Johnstone.

The magnificence of a cathedral organ, combined with the brilliance of the trumpet, stimulates the imagination of all music lovers. Australian trumpeter, John Coulton, along with English organist David Dunnett, give superb performances of this recital repertoire. The range of the program offered here gives an insight into the versatility of this musical combination: joyful and glorious music from the Baroque, beautiful and soulful melodies found in Faure and Gounod, and powerful forces of transparent colour found in the work by Petr Eben.

For two decades now organist Velin Iliev has established and developed the organ art in Bulgaria. A magnificent interpreter of old and contemporary music, in his CD he presents several different organ schools and styles, starting with Clerambault's Suite du deuxieme ton, through Bach, Cesar Franck (19th c.), to Lionel Rogg, Professor at the Geneva Conservatoire, author of instrumental and choral music. Velin Iliev made the recordings in Sofia, Varna and Dobrich, where the famous German Schuke Orgelbau Factory built organs. Thus the 1970 saw the revival of interest towards the organ, an instrument which is not so characteristic of the Eastern Slavs and the East Orthodox religion. Together with some of his colleague-organists Velin Iliev laid the foundations of the Bulgarian organ school thus attaining a great objective - to bring the Bulgarian music lovers closer to the values of the old organ music tradition. In the course of several seasons he organised the extensive series "Organ Metamorphoses", where he po

MUSICA SLAVICA - Neva KRYSTEVA, organ

MUSICA SLAVICA - Neva KRYSTEVA, organ
ID: GD225
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Organ Collection
Subcollection: Organ

The works included in this release form a brief anthology of organ music by Slavic composers. While the organ was quick to establish its overall presence in the Catholic and Protestant liturgical tradition, East Orthodox music rejects the use of instruments in general. This explains the presentation of the early epoch of organ music in this programme by Polish and Czech Slavic composers mainly, who, belonging to the Catholic tradition, took part in the historic development of European music, lending some regional characteristics to it. The organ was introduced into the works of other Slavic composers during the 20th century, mainly in secular music. The selection for the present CD was made by Neva Krysteva, who is Professor of Polyphony at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music, Sofia, a theorist of music, and a composer. Ms. Krysteva has given concerts throughout Europe and Asia. Being a performer of an extensive repertoire, she includes Baroque and Romantic music in her programmes, as well as 20th-century works. A number of compositions have been written especially for her and have been dedicated to her. She is founder of the Bulgarian organ school and many of her students perform throughout the world.

In the 1960s few would have predicted that Peter Maxwell Davies would eventually write a set of Evening Canticles; yet religious texts have always been of fundamental importance to the composer, as this disc vividly demonstrates by bringing together sacred masterworks from both ends of his career. Tough, uncompromising and of surpassing beauty, Davies’ major contributions to the Anglican repertoire are given thrilling voice by these fearless champions of contemporary liturgical music.
