Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk MusicPetko Radev, clarinet, has a special place in Bulgarian music culture. On the one hand, he is one of the most renowned classical music performers. He played in the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, in Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Milan Scala orchestra. His solo repertoire is impressive. Gega New has released recordings of his performances together with pianist Maria Prinz (GD 226). Petko Radev is a professor in the Sofia Academy of Music.
Together with that, he is a legend in Bulgarian folk music. Being a brilliant performer, he skillfully combines his virtuosic technique with magnificent improvisations on samples of Bulgarian folk music. He founded a folk music orchestra and participated in the recordings of many folk singers: Staika Gyokova, Nedialka Keranova, Yovcho Karaivanov, Gruycho Dochev, etc. For a period of nearly 20 years, performing partners of Petko Radev are among the best instrumentalists in Bulgaria: Petko Dachev, Kosta Kolev, Emil Kolev, Ivan Kirev, Yordan Yotov, Ivan Hadjiiski. Recordings of that period have long been perceived as classics in Bulgarian folk music and the next generation of performers (some of them his pupils in the Academy of Music) feel respect and regard for the musician who created a new style in the folk genre.
The album Petko Radev & Friends features the closest partners of the musician. It continues the release Petko Radev and Petko Dachev (GD 230). The two CDs are evidence of his talent and skill, of his ability to unite and develop the achievements of his older colleagues. Petko Radev’s unique style still continues to bring joy to the admirers of Bulgarian folk music.

Subcollection: Folk MusicBulgarian folklore was greatly appreciated by the first Bulgarian composers as a source of inspiration. Their first choir works based on the West-European tradition of composition are in fact arrangements of folk songs. Later, when the ensembles for folk songs were founded, Bulgarian folk music arrangement became a separate genre and marked a vigorous growth. Many of the composers created their own folk-based works and one of the most prominent of these composers was Stefan Mutafchiev (1942-1997). His greatest achievements were connected with Trakia Folk Ensemble. He is one of the founders and of the ensemble and its conductor for a very long time. It is thus natural that exactly this ensemble should represent a part of the composer’s work. The songs which have been selected for the album were written in different periods. Both his choir works and works for the ensemble are equally enchanting, and some of them represent the best songs in the repertoire of Trakia Ensemble and are greatly applauded at concerts in Bulgaria and throughout the world.
Soloists: Nevyana Savova, Gaitanka Minkovska, Gergana Pavlova, Dilyana Peneva, Ulyana Raikova, Gergana Shopova, Boika Boyadjieva, Ivanka Garkova, Zheliazka Yankova, Gergana Pavlova, Jenya Mikova-Paunova, Ivanka Todorova, Tsonka Dimitrova-Manolova |

Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk MusicThe recording of the TRAKIA Ensemble holds a particular place in the series of CDs of the best Bulgarian folk ensembles released by GEGA NEW.
At first glance, the TRAKIA Ensemble continues the tradition of the best formations: its repertoire is based on authentic folk songs, tunes and dances from all over Bulgaria, the orchestra is traditional, the music and dance material has been interpreted by famous artists who also work with other folk groups.
And still, with the very first bars the listener hears, there comes a surprise: a sparkling choir, a virtuoso and aggressive orchestra and, before all, an interpretation of songs we all know but seem to discover for the first time! The merit of art director and conductor Stefan Moutafchiev in this respect is invaluable. A man of unique musical thinking he was never after outer effects but rather subjected his work with the ensemble to his deep conviction that today the Bulgarian folklore should be developed and enriched by those expressive devices that prevail in 20th-century world music.
Of course, in his creative efforts Moutafchiev was immensely facilitated by each and every performer of the TRAKIA Ensemble. All of them have graduated from the folk-music schools in Kotel and Shiroka Luka, or the Academy for Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv. And all of them, art director and performers, have been united by a common aesthetic idea. |

Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk MusicPhilip Koutev's work was in constant progress and this CD is an illustration of the almost half-a-century folk-musical process. Starting with Koutev's famous Polegnala e Tudora (Tudora Lay Down), the singers perform several of his songs. The songs and instrumental pieces by Georgi Genov, Georgi Andreev and Hristofor Radanov show us the musical idiom of the younger generation, while Theodosii Spassov's works are indicative of a musician's non-traditional approach to the different genres. The programme ends with Dva guluba (Two Pigeons) by Kosta Kolev, a renowned master of folk arrangements. And to complete the picture, there are three sisters from the Pirin Mountains and some Shoppe singers, who take us back to the original sources of this fascinating music.
Elena Kouteva, chief artistic director
Georgi Genov, choir-master
Georgi Andreev, conductor of the orchestra

Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk MusicAfter the success of the first programme of the RHODOPEA Kaba Trio (GD 183), the second release of the trio features again Rhodope songs from RHODOPEA's repertoire. This time the trio performs accompanied by an instrumental group, rather than a cappella. Of particular interest are the songs by Stefan Dragostinov. They demonstrate the broad range of the singers' unique vocal abilities. Their beautiful alto voices are close in timbre to the sounding of the Rhodope kaba bagpipe. That is why the songs, recorded in an authentic unison with Georgi Kichukov's kaba bagpipe, fascinate the listeners.
Participating: Georgi Kichukov (kaba bagpipe) and instrumental group

Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Folk MusicThis third in succession CD of kaval-player Theodosii Spassov, an unusual phenomenon in the music-performing art, is an emanation of love for music and improvisation. At the same time, the term bratimene means spiritual closeness between people of common souls, tastes, moral and aesthetic values. That is why the virtuoso kaval-player and improviser has made a selection of pieces recorded between 1983 and 1998, on different occasions, with different friends from the circle of musicians, poets and artists to which he has always belonged. Some of them are his own compositions that have made him famous. The release presents a unique fusion of folk and jazz music, of bright musical personalities, who perform with an unmatched feeling for ensemble. Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk MusicA legend from Kyustendil region has it: a poor woman had naughty and always hungry children. She got tired of working for the daily bread, which was never enough for her children; she got tired of being kept responsible for their mischief and cursed them. She herself turned into a welkya (night tawny owl). But then her anger receded and she keeps looking for her children to the present day.
This legend has inspired Theodosii Spassov to write his highly impressive piece Welkya. The mythical, the invisible, the impossible, the unexpected turns into a sound reality. And it seems this is exactly that makes Theodosii Spassov unique. Even in the pronouncedly folk pieces his jokes and musical witticisms surprise and amaze with their rich imagination and "jumps" from one genre to another. The artist feels pleasure to "juggle" with them, to "play" with his kaval. And thus everyone is involved in this game, both the musicians and the listeners!
Performed by: Theodosii Spassov (kaval, vocals, bagpipe), Yanka Rupkina (vocals), Boika Velkova (recitatives), Georgi Petrov (gadulka), Valentin Yankov (tamboura), Georgi Donchev (bass), Stoyan Yankulov (percussions) |

Collection: Traditional Subcollection: Folk MusicWith the very first suite in this CD the listener is immersed in the Dobroudja atmosphere with the typical for this region formation of concertina, kopanka (a small rebec) and bagpipe. This is followed by several more songs and instrumental pieces which complete the overall picture of Dobroudja music. The performers defend their name of professionals, who interpret with ease the folklore of other regions as well - the Rhodope Mountains, Central West Bulgaria, Thrace and the North region of Bulgaria. |
