Julian Dawes - Chamber Works

Julian Dawes - Chamber Works
ID: CC5004
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano and Cello

The chamber works on this CD by Julian Dawes give a representative sample of a compelling selection from his uniquely wide-ranging and varied output, the continuing traditional English style of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Finzi but with its own individual voice and orchestral sound.

Amongst his 20th century English influences are the pastoralism and extended tonality of Herbert Howells, the richness of Walton, the elegant delicacy of Berkeley and the jazzy impetus of Rodney Bennett; wider European influences include the caustic irony of Shostakovich and Kurt Weil, and the rhythmic impetus of Prokofiev and Stravinsky. Yet Dawes welds from these influences an individual voice that is both distinctive and refreshing, displaying assured craftsmanship and characterful invention. (Malcolm Miller 2008)

The rediscovery in recent years of the enormous catalogue of Nino Rota's music held by the Cini Foundation in Venice is perhaps finally inverting an inversely proportional trend between the composer's popularity as author of film music and as classical music composer. In fact, if on the one hand the happy, thirty-year-long artistic marriage between Federico Fellini and himself inevitably led to identifying the composer with the sound tracks of many twentieth century masterpieces of the "seventh art" (La Strada, La dolce vita, Amarcord, Prova d'orchestra only to name a few of his films with Fellini, but also: Rocco e i suoi fratelli by Luchino Visconti, The Godfather - which earned him an oscar - by Francis Ford Coppola, as well as many others) on the other hand we are beginning to rediscover an artist who fits perfectly (who better than he?) in the area circumscribed by those parameters which delimit "Italian excellence", a much discussed phenomenon today, if not always intentionally. Refined, gifted with the same ease for composing that Mozart had (at the age of eleven he wrote his first Oratorio), but at the same time aloof and ironic, with a melancholic and paradoxical outlook on mankind, Rota is for both musicologists and impassioned fans - as they gradually uncover some new masterpiece played in concert halls - a constant surprise. This recording presents his Concerto per violoncello with Enrico Bronzi, one of the greatest and most sensitive musicians of the new generation, playing the solo part and leading the excellent Musici di Parma also in the undisputedly neoclassic Concerto per Archi (presented here in the revised version from 1977). In the Trio con clarinetto of 1973, the magic sound of Alessandro Carbonare blends together with that of Bronzi and Miodini (who play together in the Trio di Parma).

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of chamber works by Alban Berg and Olivier Messiaen.

Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano (1913) were created by Alban Berg, one of the pupils of Arnold Schoenberg, the founder of the Second Viennese School, in a period of an intense creative ascent, a year before he began to work on his opera Wozzeck.

Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is arguably one of the most amazing pages of chamber music of the 20th century. It was composed during the composer’s stay in German prisoner-of-war camp where it was premiered in January of 1941. The epigraph to the entire work was inspired by text from the Book of Revelation:

“And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire ... and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth .... And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever ... that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished.”

The works were first performed in the former USSR for the first time in 1998 at the Gift to the Vine music festival in the Georgian city of Telavi. The festival was initiated by two outstanding Soviet musicians - cellist Natalia Gutman and violinist Oleg Kagan. The composer and pianist Vasily Lobanov and Swiss clarinetist, then a member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Eduard Brunner, both recognized interpreters of contemporary music, were among the participants of the festival. A year later, the Quartet for the End of Time was performed by the same line-up in Moscow at Sviatoslav Richter’s December Evenings festival at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

The featured recording was made at one of the last performances of Oleg Kagan who passed away prematurely in 1990.

Firma Melodiya presents the art of two young soloists - virtuoso clarinetist Ivan Stolbov and pianist Kim Ja Ran (South Korea - Russia). Both musicians are graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, prize-winners of international competitions and active stage performers in Russia and overseas. Ivan Stolbov began to learn music since the age of nine. Now, he is a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre orchestra and teaches at the St. Petersburg Music College. Among his major achievements are first prizes of the Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition in St. Petersburg, Jeunesses Musicales in Bucharest and the Wind and Percussion Competition in Tokyo. The musician gives open lessons and master classes around the world. Kim Ja Ran , who started to play music when she was four years old, has been a two-time prize-winner of the International Music Competition in Albena, Bulgaria, in the categories of best solo piano performance in 2005 and performance by a piano duo in 2007. Today, she is an artist of Petersburg-Concert. The album features compositions for clarinet and piano by composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Many of the pieces are not that well known to today's Russian listeners. Sergey Taneyev's Canzona, Claude Debussy's Rapsodie, sonatas by Alexander Grechaninov, Francis Poulenc and Paul Hindemith demonstrate extensive performing and expressive skills of the young musicians. The recording was made at a concert of the Mariinsky Theatre in 2012.
