Firma Melodiya presents a recording of chamber works by Alban Berg and Olivier Messiaen.

Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano (1913) were created by Alban Berg, one of the pupils of Arnold Schoenberg, the founder of the Second Viennese School, in a period of an intense creative ascent, a year before he began to work on his opera Wozzeck.

Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is arguably one of the most amazing pages of chamber music of the 20th century. It was composed during the composer’s stay in German prisoner-of-war camp where it was premiered in January of 1941. The epigraph to the entire work was inspired by text from the Book of Revelation:

“And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire ... and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth .... And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever ... that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished.”

The works were first performed in the former USSR for the first time in 1998 at the Gift to the Vine music festival in the Georgian city of Telavi. The festival was initiated by two outstanding Soviet musicians - cellist Natalia Gutman and violinist Oleg Kagan. The composer and pianist Vasily Lobanov and Swiss clarinetist, then a member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Eduard Brunner, both recognized interpreters of contemporary music, were among the participants of the festival. A year later, the Quartet for the End of Time was performed by the same line-up in Moscow at Sviatoslav Richter’s December Evenings festival at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

The featured recording was made at one of the last performances of Oleg Kagan who passed away prematurely in 1990.

Firma Melodiya presents the art of two young soloists - virtuoso clarinetist Ivan Stolbov and pianist Kim Ja Ran (South Korea - Russia). Both musicians are graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, prize-winners of international competitions and active stage performers in Russia and overseas. Ivan Stolbov began to learn music since the age of nine. Now, he is a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre orchestra and teaches at the St. Petersburg Music College. Among his major achievements are first prizes of the Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition in St. Petersburg, Jeunesses Musicales in Bucharest and the Wind and Percussion Competition in Tokyo. The musician gives open lessons and master classes around the world. Kim Ja Ran , who started to play music when she was four years old, has been a two-time prize-winner of the International Music Competition in Albena, Bulgaria, in the categories of best solo piano performance in 2005 and performance by a piano duo in 2007. Today, she is an artist of Petersburg-Concert. The album features compositions for clarinet and piano by composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Many of the pieces are not that well known to today's Russian listeners. Sergey Taneyev's Canzona, Claude Debussy's Rapsodie, sonatas by Alexander Grechaninov, Francis Poulenc and Paul Hindemith demonstrate extensive performing and expressive skills of the young musicians. The recording was made at a concert of the Mariinsky Theatre in 2012.

ESCAPE VELOCITY - Benjamin Wallfisch, composer

Described by Humphrey Burton on BBC Radio 3 as "a major new name on the new music horizon", Benjamin Wallfisch's fast-growing list of large-scale orchestral, vocal and chamber works shows him to be a serious composer for our times. Over thirty works have been commissioned to date.
A 2005 commission from Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra was the genesis of the symphonic movement entitled Speed which displays the juxtaposing of extremes in Benjamin Wallfisch's language "great energy contrasted with slow-moving, long-breathed and yearning melody. His first String Quartet was composed for the Belcea in 2001, followed by a second for the Coull. His works outside the concert hall include a major ballet score entitled 21, commissioned by the Rambert Dance Company and premiered at London's Sadler's Wells, and a feature film score for Thomas Vinterberg's and Lars von Trier's Dear Wendy, nominated as "Discovery of the Year" in the 2005 World Soundtrack Awards. From his Opus 1, the luminous and glistening Sudden Light (commissioned by the Manchester Camerata), to his latest works including the stratospheric Escape Velocity, a piece which received its premiere the 2006 BBC Proms, there is a consistent, compelling integrity and a palpable, powerful personality.
He begins a new work by building a strong idea of its overall structure into which he feeds ideas and 'elements which all share the same DNA', and where everything, from the overall rhythmic impetus to the tiniest melodic cell, justifies its existence through its place in a complex network of interconnections. Characteristically, he places emotion at the core of the music, along with a clarity of message that must be communicable, and he taps into a rich and instinctive vein of melody which is both attractive and challenging. Ben's music is, by design, vivid and disciplined, passionate and intense.
He has also built an important parallel career as a conductor and believes that conducting, just like composition, is creative, working to achieve a clearly defined vision that must be communicated with respect and conviction.
