The first boys' choir in Sofia was founded in 1968. The idea of the founder Lilyana Todorova was to introduce a new model in the tradition of Bulgarian choral singing. Sofia Boys' Choir established itself quickly in Bulgarian choral art. Its repertoire has been especially varied after 1989, when conductor of the choir became Adriana Blagoeva. Members of the choir are boys aged between 8 and 15, who are trained by experienced teachers on a special curriculum. As many as 1500 children have been trained in the choir since its foundation. Its repertoire includes dozens of works composed between the 15th to the end of the 20th centuries and also embraces works by Bulgarian composers. The choir has always won prestigious prizes when participating at international competitions and festivals and its concerts have been loudly applauded both by the audience and the critics. The choir's conductor, Adriana Blagoeva, graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia majoring in choral conducting. She has worked actively for the choir's fame as a serious choral ensemble of high quality, capable of interpreting works ranging from songs to oratorios.

MASTERS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC - Vol. 4

MASTERS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC - Vol. 4
ID: GD256
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Orchestra

Just as in the first three albums, the series MASTERS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC (vol. 1 - GD 245, vol. 2 - GD 246, vol. 3 - GD 247) continues to present composers from different epochs and their ever-loved works. The present programme features pieces written over a vast period of time. Even though each composer represents a different trend in music, they are all united by the eternity of their work. All of them were innovators in music and influenced their followers to a great extent: from the representatives of the Vienna classical school (Mozart and Beethoven), to the author of the first German romantic opera (Weber), the most outstanding comic opera composer (Rossini), up to Elgar, who worked in the beginning of the 19th and the end of the 20th c.

MASTERS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC - Vol. 5

MASTERS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC - Vol. 5
ID: GD257
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Viola

The fifth disc of the series continues that trend of presenting world-famous classical works, loved by many generations of classical music admirers. The four programs released up to now (vol. 1 - GD 245, vol. 2 - GD 246, vol. 3 - GD 247, vol. 4 - GD 256) feature great works of the 18th, 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This release also includes a long period in time, which is another proof that the different aesthetic visions of the composers and their various stylistic means of expression do not oppose them to each other, but rather unite them by the eternal value of their work.
The “Masters of Classical Music” series has had great success with the listeners and this is due especially to the Bulgarian conductor Vassil Kazandjiev. He offers a precise interpretation of the works, and an exceptional knowledge of the epoch and style of the composers. The viola player Dimitar Penkov also participates in the program. He is a world-renowned artist, lives in Germany and concertizes in many countries throughout the world.

In her pre-teen years she gained international fame by winning important prizes in competitions in Italy, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. Mila Georgieva studied with Dorothy De Lay and Cho-Liang Lin at the Juilliard School in New York and with Yfrah Neaman at the Guildhall School in London. As soloist she has performed with renowned orchestras and conductors. She participates at summer festivals and gives solo concerts throughout the world, and since 2003-2004, Mila Georgieva has been the concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra of Radio Stuttgart. The conductor Martin Panteleev was also born in Sofia and he also began his music education by studying the violin with Angelina Atanassova. The Masonic movement is considered to have originated in the beginning of the 18th century. For this reason, the present release covers three centuries. The composers included are not only among the greatest musicians, but they are also renowned members of Masonic lodges. For example, Haydn and Mozart were members of "Zur wahren Eintracht" (True Harmony), and List was a member of "Zur Einigkeit" (Unity). The performers Ventseslav Nikolov and Ruzhka Tcharaktchieva are among the most distinguished Bulgarian musicians and laureates of prestigious international competitions. Currently they are respected members of the adjudicators’ committees of these competitions. Still giving concerts and making recordings of works from different epochs, they pass their experience to their students at the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov Academy of Music. The programme with music by Masonic composers is a clear example of their excellent performing skill and interpretation of styles !

Product Description
Le nozze di Figaro has been Glyndebourne's `signature' opera since the company was founded in 1934. To the social satire of Beaumarchais's original play da Ponte added the sparkling bustle of Italian intrigue, and Mozart a miraculous, fizzing score whose music rings variations on the pains, pleasure and follies of the human heart. This recording of the 1962 Glyndebourne production features a vintage cast with Heinz Blankenburg in the title role, Mirella Freni as Susanna, who had made her international breakthrough at Glyndebourne the previous summer.
**Rare recording of a Glyndebourne signature piece from the 1962 Festival with a vintage cast. **Le nozze di Figaro opened the first Glyndebourne Festival in 1934 and continues to be one of the most performed works at Glyndebourne. **Libretto translated from original Italian into English, French and German. **Extensive accompanying booklet including a commissioned article about the opera and a synopsis in English, French and German. **3 discs in 300-page hard-bound book.

Mozart - Idomeneo, K366 - Pavarotti -1964 Glyndebourne debut recording

Mozart - Idomeneo, K366 - Pavarotti -1964 Glyndebourne debut recording
ID: GFO00664
CDs: 2
Type: CD

Recorded live at Glyndebourne 14 August 1964.
Includes 2 discs in a 113 page hard-bound book

Mozart is very much Glyndebourne’s signature composer and as a point of fact Glyndebourne was instrumental in putting Mozart back into the repertoire in the UK, so much so that the performing edition of Idomeneo was commissioned by Glyndebourne’s music director Fritz Busch. Glyndebourne’s 1951 Messel production of Mozart’s Idomeneo was the first professional performance in Great Britain. This 1964 recording is from the last staging of the Messel production and an opera John Pritchard had conducted at Glyndebourne since 1952. Pritchard was a consummate Mozartian and this recording allows, for the first time, Janowitz and Pavarotti to be heard before their respective international careers took off. Their vocal timbres are instantly recognisable - fresh, vital, flexible and already burgeoning with a distinctive projection of the text and drama. Pavarotti went on to have a long association with this opera, moving to the title role at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and recording it in the early digital age of 1983 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted once again by Pritchard. Richard Lewis as Idomeneo in the recording has a gracious sense of style and carries the day.

In the past (10+ years ago) there have been pirated/bootlegged releases of this production taken from a BBC off air recording. This release is from Glyndebourne’s own archive and is NOT the previously available BBC performance.

Richard Lewis (Idomeneo), Gundula Janowitz (Ilia), Luciano Pavarotti (Idamante), Enriqueta Tarrés (Elettra), Dennis Wicks (Nettuno), Neilson Taylor (Arbace), David Hughes (Gran Sacerdote)
