Firma Melodiya presents one of the brightest masterpieces of Russian choral music of the 20th century - Valery Gavrilin’s Chimes.

This composer is by right named Georgy Sviridov’s successor. The major motifs of Valery Gavrilin’s music are associated with folklore, images of the Russian north and native region of Vologda.

Chimes, a “performance symphony” as the composer defined the genre of the piece, was written for soloists, choir, oboe and percussion, and subtitled “upon reading V. Shukshin”. The roots of his art go deep into the native land”, Gavrilin commented on the works of Vasily Shukshin, an outstanding Russian writer, actor and film director, a singer of the Russian provinces. The key image of the piece was borrowed from one of Shukshin’s novels - a “noble robber” (Stepan Razin, a Cossack leader of the Russian peasant revolt of the 17th century). The text was compiled of folklore sources and Vladimir Monomakh’s Instructions, a Russian literary monument of the 12th century.

Chimes was premiered in Leningrad and Moscow in 1984. The work which received a State Prize of the USSR won recognition of a broad audience. “It is written with blood of the heart. Living, contemporary music of a deeply national stamp, and above all, of a present-day world-view born here, in our land”, Georgy Sviridov commented on the work.

Chimes was composed for the Moscow Chamber Choir which was founded by the prominent choral conductor Vladimir Minin in 1972 and is still one of the best choirs of Russia has successfully represented traditions of Russian choral signing in this country and abroad.

The recording of Valery Gavrilin’s Chimes performed by the Moscow Chamber Choir with the participation of Rogvold Sukhoverko, a renowned actor of Sovremennik Theatre, Anatoly Lyubimov, an oboist and soloist of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra, and other musicians led by Vladimir Minin was made in 1988.

Maestro Vladimir Spivakov - J.S. Bach - Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra

Maestro Vladimir Spivakov - J.S. Bach - Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra
ID: MELCD1002301
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Collection: Baroque
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

For the anniversary of maestro Vladimir Spivakov, Firma Melodiya presents a unique, previously unreleased recording of the Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra made on 28 December 1988 in the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

From the first years of their existence, the Moscow Virtuosi, founded by Vladimir Spivakov, lived up to the highest standards of mastery on both domestic and global scales. It was a genuine 'orchestra of soloists' comprising prize-winners of domestic and international competitions, concertmasters of the best orchestras of Moscow many of whom could count on a brilliant solo career.

Although the Virtuosi spent a lot of time in the studio, it is the orchestra’s concert recordings that convey the atmosphere of a living, inspired contact with the audience.

The charitable activities Vladimir Spivakov has been involved in for many years now are evidence of his great human responsiveness, his desire to support talented children and his empathy for people’s suffering. The pre-New Year concert of 1988 was a fundraising event to benefit the Armenian children who suffered in the earthquake.

The concert, comprising music of Johann Sebastian Bach, featured other prominent musicians as well - Mikhail Pletnev, Araxia Davtian, an Honoured Artist of the Armenian SSR, and Bernard Soustrot, a world renowned French trumpeter. However, Adagio from the Easter Oratorio for oboe and orchestra performed instead of an encore by Alexei Utkin, an oboist and future founder of the Hermitage Ensemble, was a genuine climax of the event. The music reflecting upon passions of Christ’s earthly life sounded like a requiem for the tens of thousands of people who were buried alive in Spitak and Leninakan.

Collection: Ballet Music

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Arif Melikovs Legend of Love, one of the most outstanding works of Soviet ballet theatre. Legend of Love (19581961) was one of the first large-scale works written by the 28-year-old composer, but it was this ballet that brought him worldwide fame. The ballet was commissioned by the Kirov (now Mariinsky) Opera and Ballet Theatre and created in close collaboration with its co-authors choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, librettist Nâzim Hikmet, set designer Semyon Virsaladze and conductor Niyazi. Following a triumphant premiere in 1961 in Leningrad, Legend of Love was produced at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre and then staged at many theatres of the USSR, Europe and the world. The popularity of the ballet based on the Persian legend Khosrow and Shirin about tragic love and self-sacrifice has not waned. The recording was made by the Big Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio and Central Television of the USSR conducted by young Valery Gergiev in 1988.

Sergei Prokofiev - The Story of a Real Man

Sergei Prokofiev - The Story of a Real Man
ID: MELCD1002353
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Collection: Opera Collection
Subcollection: Opera

Firma Melodiya presents a unique recording of Sergei Prokofiev’s last opera The Story of a Real Man.
This work is arguably the least known one in Prokofiev’s musical theatre legacy. Finished in 1948, it was never staged in the composer’s lifetime (its “private” performance led to banning the opera and accusing the composer of formalism). Only many years later it saw spotlights, but none of the production lasted long.
The opera, so uncommon in terms of plotline and musical drama, seemed incredible even for an innovator like Prokofiev. The composer who had brought to the stage the characters of Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Bryusov was carried away with Boris Polevoy’s novel about pilot Alexei Meresiev (he lost his legs as a result of a severe injury, but at the cost of unbelievable efforts and exercising he returned to the battle ranks). The main character is shown crawling from a shot down plane, in a hospital ward and mastering his artificial limbs at hospital. The character of Alexei, a winner in his own life drama, a man of enormous fortitude who did something seemingly impossible, was an incentive for the composer’s creative imagination.
The dramatic concept of the opera is built on a frame-like sequence of short scenes set off with moving lyrical episodes. The musical language of the opera predominantly consists of declamation and recitative and is full of songful intonations.
The only recording of The Story of a Real Man that now exists was made by the company of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre in 1961 and conducted by young maestro Mark Ermler. The character of Alexei Meresiev became one of the highest achievements of prominent singer Evgeny Kibkalo. The recording also features other celebrated soloists of the theatre such as Glafira Deomidova, Margarita Miglau, Kira Leonova, Alexei Maslennikov, Mark Reshetin and Artur Eisen.

Firma Melodiya presents a collection of Sergei Taneyev’s best works in the interpretation of Evgeny Svetlanov.
“A great Russian musician, whose all efforts inspire deep respect,” musicologist Boris Asafyev wrote about Taneyev. As a composer, pianist, music theorist and educator, disciple of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Nikolai Rubinstein, teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, professor and director of Moscow Conservatory, Taneyev made an immense contribution to the Russian music at the turn of the 20th century. His work drew on the traditions of symphonic, chamber and opera music by Tchaikovsky, enriching them with intensive polyphonic development.
Cantata John of Damascus is Taneyev’s first composition endowed with artistic maturity (the author himself numbered it Opus 1). It is dedicated to the memory of his teacher Nikolai Rubinstein; the composition is based on the church chant Give rest with the saints, thoroughly elaborated, similarly to chorales in choral pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach. Symphony No. 4 in C minor is a masterpiece of Taneyev’s instrumental music, where the traditional structure of sonata-symphonic cycle is filled with intense dramatic movement “from the darkness to the light.”
The collection also features a refined concert suite for violin and orchestra and the symphonic entr’acte from the opera Oresteia (Temple of Apollo at Delphi) - an image of imperishable Light and Justice embodied in the image of the ancient god.
Taneyev’s compositions are recorded in the version of the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by of Evgeny Svetlanov - a major interpreter of the Russian classical music. The cantata was recorded with the participation of the Big Choir of the All-Union Radio and Central TV, the concert suite features Andrey Korsakov, People’s Artiste of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, one of the best students of Leonid Kogan.
