Great Tamburini mechanical Organ from the Protestant Church in Milan

This recording includes Bach's works from Vivaldi, as well as from Telemann, Couperin and other composers.

"It is well known how early Bach refined and smoothened his style studying and transcribing Vivaldi and eventually extending the practice for didactic purposes. On the basis of the little documentation left, Bach may be assumed to have made only but minimal changes: just details which anyway reveal the great Maestro's "griffe": it may lie in a remake of the melody or in the addition of one counterpoint. These subtle changes were meant to support practical use of keyboards in opposition to the violin base".

According to the testimony of several contemporaries, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was "also" an excellent organist. Suffice it to say that in 1763, at the age of seven, he gives performances of organ music too. That was what could be read on the play-bill annoucing the youngest Wolfgang's concert in Frankfurt: "The young boy, who is seven years old, will improvise on the harpsichord and on the organ, in every tonality, also the most difficult, as much as the audience desires, to show that he is very skilful at the organ and the harpsichord, even if they are very different instruments." And in 1777, in a letter to his father, Wolfgang writes: "...
To my eyes and my years, the organ is the king of instruments... The organ is my real passion...". Nevertheless Mozart composed only a few works for the "king of instruments." Moreover, some of these works (like the Fantasia in F minor KV. 594, the Andante in F major KV. 616 and the Fantasia in F minor KV. 608) were composed for the so-called mechanical or cylinder organ (this kind of rational wonders, such as the mechanical musical instruments, were greatly appreciated in the Enlightenment). But naturally Mozart created also "real" organ pieces like the Fugue in E flat major KV. 401 and the Fugue in E flat major KV. 153, written with the same severe style of baroque tradition, the Ouverture in C major KV. 399 which seems to be a Händel exercise, the Little Jig KV. 574 ("Eine Kleine Gigue" or Jig of Leipzig), where the tribute to Bach emerged from the quotation of B-A-C-H name in a kind of touching retrospective homage. As the end of this short guide to listening a
different Mozart we offer two famous transcriptions: the renowned Fugue from the Kyrie of Requiem written by Muzio Clementi and the Ave Verum by Franz Listz.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck is one of the principal composers in the 16th- and 17th-century Holland. As far as we know, Sweelinck only left Holland on one time. Nevertheless his works show Italien/Venetian influences, English/virginalist elements and knowledge of spanish composers. The growing cultural importance of Amsterdam in Sweelinck´s day probalbly explain his knowledge of contemporary European music. At the beginning of the 17th century, many organists travelled not only from Germany but also Poland and Sweden to Amsterdam to study under the famous Sweelinck. Later his Hamburg pupils Heinrich Scheidemann and Jacob Praetorius founded a sort of ‘Sweelinck outpost’ in Hamburg. They passed on their pupils what they have learned in Amsterdam. Léon Berben plays the pieces of Sweelincks und his pupils brilliantly at St. Jaque’s Church in Liège. This organ was reconstructed in the style of the late 16th century, following Sweelinck´s large organ in Amsterdam. RK 2205 | edition raumklang | Total: 67:32
