Mardi Brass: Something Borrowed... - works borrowed from borrowed works

Mardi Brass: Something Borrowed... - works borrowed from borrowed works
ID: LIR020
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Brass Collection
Subcollection: Quartet

In the third CD of Mardi Brass’ epic four-CD journey from the Renaissance to the present day (Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue), the group presents a cornucopia of exciting original compositions, and imaginative arrangements by members of the group, each of which is a premiere recording.
Covering a wide range of musical styles, the unifying feature is that the composers
have borrowed thematic material - and inspiration - from one source and reinterpreted it using their own unique voices. Transcending mere arrangement or pastiche, the composers demonstrate the art of musical disguise and metamorphosis, seamlessly moulding and fusing material from one genre to another.

Embracing The Unknown - John Kenny - Catriona McKay - The Edinburgh String Quartet

Embracing The Unknown - John Kenny - Catriona McKay - The Edinburgh String Quartet
ID: BC3010
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Brass Collection
Subcollection: Brass

This CD is the result of the fact that Peter Swann sent John Kenny the score of Prelude & Fandango in 2004, and he immediately realised that in order to do Peter’s piece justice, it would be necessary to generate additional pieces to explore the potential of this wonderful but completely untried combination. A small but very fine repertoire for trombone and string quartet already exists, as it does for harp and trombone duo, and also for harp and string quartet, but he could find no other examples for this sextet combination. The challenge, therefore, was to generate a completely new repertoire - and this CD is one of the results of that project.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Wind Orchestra

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Wind Orchestra
ID: GD299
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Brass Collection
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

After featuring the tambura, zourna and gaida instruments (GD 278, GD 276, GD 106), the series continues with presenting horos and ruchenitsa for wind orchestra. Having originated after the liberation of the Bulgarian people from the rule of the Ottoman Empire (1878), today they have become a necessary part of all festive celebrations in Bulgaria.
The intense development of music and performance art during the first years of independence in Bulgaria lead to the creation of professional symphonic, opera and chamber ensembles. Together with them the first military wind orchestras were formed. Their repertoire consists of marches, polkas, overtures, etc., as well as horo music and medleys of folk songs. A large number of composers at that time wrote folk-based music for wind orchestras. The most talented composer of such music was Diko Iliev. After his participation in the Balkan War and the First World War, he began composing horos, which are still being loved by the Bulgarian people. From 1931 Diko Iliev played the baritone in the newly-founded wind orchestra in Oryahovo and thus he put the beginning of one of his most intense periods of creative activity. Iliev had the happy fate to become an inseparable part of the Bulgarian urban musical folklore. After him other well-trained musicians continued this trend. Today the wind orchestra is an intrinsic part of the Bulgarian folk music culture.
