Kolektion: Traditional

In the Bulgarian folk tradition instrumental music performs a specific function - to accompany the horo dances played on Sundays or at public holidays in the village square. Each region in Bulgaria has its own preferences for the specific instruments and characteristic dances. In Dobroudja, for example, the typical horo dances Opas, Sborenka, Ruka, Tropanka, etc. are accompanied on kopanka, gaida (bagpipe), and in more recent times, by three concertina-, kopanka- and bagpipe-players. In the Pirin Mountains region the heavy horo dancing used to be accompanied on tamburas, tarambukas, or zurnas (in the southernmost parts). In Thrace the favourite instrument is the kaval.

Art Manager - Snejanka BORISSOVA

Svoge and Svidnya are located on the northern border of the polyphonic Shope region. Situated on both banks of the Iskar River, they strive to preserve their unique folk heritage. The singers of the Svoge Group have worked together since 1980, and those from the Svidnya Troika - since 1981. Their age ranges from 64 to 81 years. Many of the singers remember the time when these songs were part of their way of living: ritual songs, songs for harvest time, pastoral, working-bee, horo, at the table songs. For this reason they sound so authentic! The singers perform in antiphony to present the local polyphonic tradition (both groups alternate). One of the singers (a “whooper”) sings the song, while the rest drag the bourdon voice (“draggers”). The songs are very effective; they also employ trill-like quavers and yelling. Some monophonic songs are also included in the album, but they are not so many. They resemble the polyphonic songs in their ornamentation, melody and rhythmic structure. The Svoge Group and the Svidnya Troika often participate at different folk festivals and celebrations, TV and radio programmes. During the past few years they have been working with the famous folk singer Snejanka Borissova. “We know that these songs are ancient and beautiful. But we are the only ones who know this ... There is nobody to sing them now - nobody would set to do this. We feel very sorry about that…” These revelations of the grannies from Svoge and Svidnya speak of the value of this release.

BULGARIAN FOLK DANCES - PETKO RADEV & FRIENDS

BULGARIAN FOLK DANCES - PETKO RADEV & FRIENDS
ID: GD351

Type: CD

Petko Radev, clarinet, has a special place in Bulgarian music culture. On the one hand, he is one of the most renowned classical music performers. He played in the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, in Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Milan Scala orchestra. His solo repertoire is impressive. Gega New has released recordings of his performances together with pianist Maria Prinz (GD 226). Petko Radev is a professor in the Sofia Academy of Music.
Together with that, he is a legend in Bulgarian folk music. Being a brilliant performer, he skillfully combines his virtuosic technique with magnificent improvisations on samples of Bulgarian folk music. He founded a folk music orchestra and participated in the recordings of many folk singers: Staika Gyokova, Nedialka Keranova, Yovcho Karaivanov, Gruycho Dochev, etc. For a period of nearly 20 years, performing partners of Petko Radev are among the best instrumentalists in Bulgaria: Petko Dachev, Kosta Kolev, Emil Kolev, Ivan Kirev, Yordan Yotov, Ivan Hadjiiski. Recordings of that period have long been perceived as classics in Bulgarian folk music and the next generation of performers (some of them his pupils in the Academy of Music) feel respect and regard for the musician who created a new style in the folk genre.
The album Petko Radev & Friends features the closest partners of the musician. It continues the release Petko Radev and Petko Dachev (GD 230). The two CDs are evidence of his talent and skill, of his ability to unite and develop the achievements of his older colleagues. Petko Radev’s unique style still continues to bring joy to the admirers of Bulgarian folk music.

TRAKIA FOLKLORE ENSEMBLE - FOLK SONGS & DANCES

TRAKIA FOLKLORE ENSEMBLE - FOLK SONGS & DANCES
ID: GD110
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Kolektion: TraditionalSubkolektion: Folk Music

The recording of the TRAKIA Ensemble holds a particular place in the series of CDs of the best Bulgarian folk ensembles released by GEGA NEW.
At first glance, the TRAKIA Ensemble continues the tradition of the best formations: its repertoire is based on authentic folk songs, tunes and dances from all over Bulgaria, the orchestra is traditional, the music and dance material has been interpreted by famous artists who also work with other folk groups.
And still, with the very first bars the listener hears, there comes a surprise: a sparkling choir, a virtuoso and aggressive orchestra and, before all, an interpretation of songs we all know but seem to discover for the first time! The merit of art director and conductor Stefan Moutafchiev in this respect is invaluable. A man of unique musical thinking he was never after outer effects but rather subjected his work with the ensemble to his deep conviction that today the Bulgarian folklore should be developed and enriched by those expressive devices that prevail in 20th-century world music.
Of course, in his creative efforts Moutafchiev was immensely facilitated by each and every performer of the TRAKIA Ensemble. All of them have graduated from the folk-music schools in Kotel and Shiroka Luka, or the Academy for Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv. And all of them, art director and performers, have been united by a common aesthetic idea.

PHILIP KOUTEV BULGARIAN FOLK ENSEMBLE

PHILIP KOUTEV BULGARIAN FOLK ENSEMBLE

Type: CD
Kolektion: TraditionalSubkolektion: Folk Music

Philip Koutev's work was in constant progress and this CD is an illustration of the almost half-a-century folk-musical process. Starting with Koutev's famous Polegnala e Tudora (Tudora Lay Down), the singers perform several of his songs. The songs and instrumental pieces by Georgi Genov, Georgi Andreev and Hristofor Radanov show us the musical idiom of the younger generation, while Theodosii Spassov's works are indicative of a musician's non-traditional approach to the different genres. The programme ends with Dva guluba (Two Pigeons) by Kosta Kolev, a renowned master of folk arrangements. And to complete the picture, there are three sisters from the Pirin Mountains and some Shoppe singers, who take us back to the original sources of this fascinating music.

Elena Kouteva, chief artistic director
Georgi Genov, choir-master
Georgi Andreev, conductor of the orchestra
