RHODOPEA KABA TRIO - Vol. 2 - FOLK SONGS

RHODOPEA KABA TRIO - Vol. 2 - FOLK SONGS
ID: GD124
Disk: 1
Type: CD
Kolekce: TraditionalPodkolekce: Folk Music

After the success of the first programme of the RHODOPEA Kaba Trio (GD 183), the second release of the trio features again Rhodope songs from RHODOPEA's repertoire. This time the trio performs accompanied by an instrumental group, rather than a cappella. Of particular interest are the songs by Stefan Dragostinov. They demonstrate the broad range of the singers' unique vocal abilities. Their beautiful alto voices are close in timbre to the sounding of the Rhodope kaba bagpipe. That is why the songs, recorded in an authentic unison with Georgi Kichukov's kaba bagpipe, fascinate the listeners.

Participating: Georgi Kichukov (kaba bagpipe) and instrumental group

WELKYA - THEODOSII SPASSOV, kaval

WELKYA - THEODOSII SPASSOV, kaval

A legend from Kyustendil region has it: a poor woman had naughty and always hungry children. She got tired of working for the daily bread, which was never enough for her children; she got tired of being kept responsible for their mischief and cursed them. She herself turned into a welkya (night tawny owl). But then her anger receded and she keeps looking for her children to the present day.
This legend has inspired Theodosii Spassov to write his highly impressive piece Welkya. The mythical, the invisible, the impossible, the unexpected turns into a sound reality. And it seems this is exactly that makes Theodosii Spassov unique. Even in the pronouncedly folk pieces his jokes and musical witticisms surprise and amaze with their rich imagination and "jumps" from one genre to another. The artist feels pleasure to "juggle" with them, to "play" with his kaval. And thus everyone is involved in this game, both the musicians and the listeners!

Performed by: Theodosii Spassov (kaval, vocals, bagpipe), Yanka Rupkina (vocals), Boika Velkova (recitatives), Georgi Petrov (gadulka), Valentin Yankov (tamboura), Georgi Donchev (bass), Stoyan Yankulov (percussions)

THE MYSTERY OF BULGARIAN VOICES CHOIR

THE MYSTERY OF BULGARIAN VOICES CHOIR
ID: GD147
Disk: 1
Type: CD
Kolekce: TraditionalPodkolekce: Folk Music

The famous choir The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices conducted by Dora Hristova again conveys its challenge to Bulgarian folk music lovers, this time with their interpretation of songs from the most widely spread and cherished customs, those at Christmas and at St. Lazar's Day. The songs sung at Christmas and St. Lazar's Day lend specific colour in the repertoire of many ensembles. This programme is a successful attempt to select songs which represent a comparison between the two customs.
Christmas is celebrated on the day when the church commemorates Christ's nativity. Yet the deep meaning of the custom is in the ancient pagan beliefs about the birth of the new sun. There are young men-Christmas-carollers and their leader is always an older man, called stanenik. According to the custom, the time for Christmas celebration is specifically set - from midnight till sunrise. The Christmas carollers make their rounds always starting to the east. They sing songs glorifying the host in every house and bless him for health and fertility. In their turn, the hosts present them with Christmas ring-shaped buns decorated with a coin and meat, beans, etc.
The celebrations at St. Lazar's Day are also connected with the well-wishing for health and fertility. This custom is celebrated one week before Easter, at St. Lazarus's day. The main participants in the celebrations are young girls, lazarki, lead by an elder one, called a god-mother, leader. They make their rounds in the village yards, dancing horo dances and singing songs, according to the hosts' age and status. Like during the Christmas-tide celebrations the hosts give them money, flour, eggs, etc.
Both customs follow a strict pattern, which has been observed here by the producer, Nikolai Kaufmann. His is the idea for this programme. Even though some other composers were also invited to include their works in the programme (Peter Lyondev, Kosta Kolev, Ivan Vulev), the listener still perceives it as an inseparable piece.

North Bulgaria is a region with fascinating folklore obtained by the interaction of the traditions of several groups: local population, Balkan people and immigrants from Eastern Thrace. Even during the Turkish domination in Bulgaria the Danube river served as a natural link with Central and Eastern Europe. That is why, along with the old-time songs and tunes, one can also hear others, in which the European influence is felt. These peculiarities of the North-Bulgarian folk-musical idiom are conspicuously present in the recordings of the "HORO" Orchestra from the town of Rousse. Vassil Purvanov, its conductor, is from Lom, a small Danubean town in Northwest Bulgaria. This explains the presence of some Northern motifs in the horo tunes. Irrespective of his classical music education (he graduated from the State Academy of Music in Sofia majoring in clarinet), he has always performed folk music only. This was how he established the best folk orchestra in North Bulgaria, which has preserved its original style throughout the long years of creative existence without yielding to modern influences.

The "HORO" Orchestra includes: Vassil Purvanov (clarinet, saxophone, wooden pipe, occarina), Ivailo Petrov (accordion), Nikolai Deskov (accordion), Lyubomir Hristov (accordion), Dimiter Hodjev (guitar), Yavor Minchev (guitar, tambura), Dimiter Petrov (double-bass), Dimiter Tsaparkov (keyboards), Peter Avramov (big drum)
Soloists: Elka Boneva, Nedelcho Vulev, Georgi Androv, Mariana Androva

Trio "Bulgarka-Penev" has undertaken the ambitious task to represent the vocal variety of Bulgarian musical folklore. Snejana Borissova, Maya Dencheva and Stoyanka Boneva, together with composer Dimiter Penev lead us brilliantly through the Shoppe region, Thrace, the Pirin Mountains region, North Bulgaria, Strandja and the Rhodope Mountains. The songs are now jocular, now playful, now drawling and lyrical. The three singers are from different folk regions: Snejana Borissova is from the Shoppe region, Maya Dencheva comes from North Bulgaria and Stoyanka Boneva from the Pirin Mountains. The credit for the unity of the three different styles of performance, for the covering of other fascinating folk regions goes to Dimiter Penev. His compositional approach is as close as possible to the original version of each song. And the matching partnership of the musicians from the Bolyari Orchestra increases the feeling for a multi-coloured home-woven rug with its unique colours and patterns.

KABA TRIO RHODOPEA - PIRIN FOLK SONGS

Three rich-voiced singers change our ideas about the capacities of women's voices: deep altos, rich in timbre and mastered to perfection. Each one of the three is a prominent solo performer with a rich authentic repertoire. By uniting their voices into songs it is as if they confirm the legend about the mythical Orpheus, born in the Rhodope Mountains.
The Rhodope songs are free, calm in the pentatonic which is characteristic of this region only, with prevailing love subjects. The singers from Rhodopea Kaba Trio illustrate to the best the song folklore of their native region. The composers' intervention has only enhanced the melodic characteristics of each of the songs without altering its authentic basis.
The improvisations of Evelina Balcheva (a celebrated jazz-singer) and the trio introduce yet another curious detail in the overall traditional sounding. These are masterfully shaped out improvisations, showing some popular folk songs in a new, even exotic light.

The Vessela and Lyuben Bojkov duet made their first recordings in the 1980s and quickly won recognition. Up to that time Vessela grew up with her father's songs. (Lyuben Bojkov is a famous folk singer who enjoys an active concert career and has numerous recordings.) The beautiful voices of both father and daughter and their excellent ensemble performance rank them among the leading Bulgarian folk singers. Their repertoire ranges from lyrical love and sad immigrant songs to merry everyday tunes and songs performed at the table. The release features some of their most popular songs which are the most eloquent illustration of the combination between rhythm and metre from the authentic Pirin folk music and the European melodies and harmony. This is what turns the music of Pirin Macedonia into a bridge thrown between the distant past and the present day, between the different folk regions in Bulgaria.

Folk Songs & Dances - with the "DOBROUDJA" Ensemble
ID: GD176
Disk: 1
Type: CD
Kolekce: TraditionalPodkolekce: Folk Music

While the first CD of the "Dobroudja" Ensemble (GD 140) includes music not only from Dobroudja but also from other folk regions in Bulgaria, this programme is dedicated to the region which has given its name to the ensemble. Recorded and released 40 years after the ensemble's foundation, it pays tribute to the Dobroudja musical tradition. The selection of repertoire and authors brings evidence to the good taste of artistic director Kostadin Bouradjiev and his assistants. The singers from the women's choir have given a brilliant reading of the complex scores and the remarkable orchestra and its soloists complete the virtuoso picture with the most characteristic Dobroudja dances: Ruka, Opas, Sborenka, etc.
