cor! - Alison Teale plays cor anglais and Elizabeth Burley, piano
ID: CC2023
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

The 16-page full colour CD booklet folds out to reveal a large image of a cor anglais,
as well as biographies and track notes in English. Introduction by Alison Teale: "I love the cor anglais. To me, it's one of the most wonderful instruments in the orchestra. My mission is to expand its repertoire, to encourage more people to explore its hidden qualities and gain as much pleasure from playing as I do. "I've chosen a mix of music to illustrate the astonishing versatility of the cor anglais: not only its rich and beautiful melodic tones, but also its power and extraordinary agility. Some pieces, such as Luchetti's Rock Song, push the boundaries of technique. Others, like Piazzolla's Nightclub 1960, reveal the glorious upper register. And some, such as the Bebop Tango, are just plain fun."

Alison Teale is the principal cor anglais player with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. While studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Alison was appointed co-principal oboe with the Honh]=g Kong Philharmonic orchestra. In 2003 she moved to Cardiff to become the principal cor anglais player for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

In 2001 Alison won the Isle of Wight International oboe Competition, which led to here Purcell Room debut. She has performed numerous concertos for BBC Radio 3, notably Quiet City with Alison Balsam.

She enjoys giving regular masterclasses, performing solo and chamber music recitals, and the additional variety that comes from freelance work. Alison is oboe professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Pianist Elizabeth Burley performs, records and broadcasts widely in several different roles: chamber musician, orchestral pianist, soloist and accompanist. She has worked with some of the world's leading orchestras - notably the BBC Sympnony Orchestra, where she has collaborated with many of the most influential modern composers, inclding Boulez, Berio, Knussen, Adams and Maxwell Davies.
Elizabeth is a professor at the Royal College of Music.

From XX to XXI. Valeri Tarakanov. Music for violin

From XX to XXI. Valeri Tarakanov. Music for violin
ID: CR113
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

Valery Tarakanov was born in 1934. Both his parents were scientists specializing in medicine; they were great music-lovers and it was a family tradition to play classical music at home. Valery Tarakanov graduated from school with a Gold medal. Later, he studied at the Moscow State University Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty (graduated with distinction in 1956). He followed the postgraduate course at the Mathematics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Since 1961, Valery Tarakanov works in the same Institute; at present, he is one of the leading scientists at the Institute, doctor of mathematics, the author of several monographs and more than 150 scientific works.
Mr. Tarakanov's musical talent led him to the Vladimir Stassov music School where he studied as a violinist and later to the Ippolitov-Ivanov Musical College. Later on, he improved his skills, taking lessons from many prominent piano and music theory professors. He was especially interested in composition and studied with famous composers Andrei Volkonsky, Eduard Khagagortyan and Edisson Denissov. His brother, Mikhail Tarakanov, an eminent musicologist, also had important impact on his creative life. Among those who played significant part in Valery Tarakanov's musical development was, surprisingly, his mathematics professor Igor Schafarevich, an outstanding scientist, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The composer himself thinks that he awes to academic Schafarevich his ability to feel the logic of musical form, construct and organize the music (an absolutely necessary part of composing, which does not affect the emotional side).
The name of Valery Tarakanov is well known in the musical world. His compositions - the opera "Antony and Cleopatra", Vespers, Liturgy, violin and cello concertos, vocal cycles, romances and works for choir - are performed in the important concert halls of Moscow and other Russian cities. Many popular radio stations - "Orpheus", "Radio of Russia" and others, include them in their programs. Among the performers - most eminent Russian musicians, orchestras, choirs: the choir of the Academy of the Choir art, "The Seasons" Chamber orchestra, the soloists of the famous "Moscow trio" - Alexander Bonduriansky, Vladimir Ivanov and Mikhail Utkin, Mikhail Tolpygo and many others. Since 1995 Valery Tarakanov is a member of the Composer's Union of Russia; he participates in its musical and social activities.

Mikhail Voskresensky is one of Russia's leading pianists. He is the winner of four international piano competitions (Schumann in Berlin, in Rio de Janeiro, George Enescu in Bucharest, and Van Cliburn in Fort Worth, Texas). In 1966 he was honoured with the Merited Artist of Russia award and in 1989, the People's Artist of Russia. Mikhail Voskresensky has extensive concert experience.
He is the only pianist in Russia to perform all of Chopin's piano compositions during one concert season (in 1982-83, in nine recitals in the Maly Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire).
Mikhail Voskresensky graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire where he studied under Ilia Klyachko, Boris Zemliansky, Yakob Milstein, Lev Oborin (piano) and Leonid Roizman (organ). As student of the famous Lev Oborin, the winner of the First Chopin's Competition in 1927, Voskresensky adopted his teacher's refined romanticism, and perfect taste in harmony with the piano's splendid sound. The images evoked by his playing suggest contrasting musical colours, never out of harmony, with a charming legato inducing the instrument to sing. "His playing fascinates audiences with its artistry, cordiality and ingeniousness. Mikhail Voskresensky is a very talented and intelligent musician", Oborin wrote about his pupil.
Voskresensky's repertoire includes Beethoven's 32 sonatas, all works of Chopin, and 56 piano concertos. He has performed with orchestras under the direction of more than 150 conductors, among them - Charles Dutoit, John Pritchard, Franz Kon-witschny, Kurt Masur, Eugeny Svetlanov, Kirill Kondrashin etc. His 40 CD's include recent recordings of all sonatas and etudes by Scriabin, "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky, Beethoven’s Hammer-klavier, works by Liszt, Schumann, Rachmaninov...
Mikhail Voskresensky began his pedagogical activities at the Moscow Conservatoire in 1959. For 8 years, he was an assistant to Professor Lev Oborin; since 1963 he has his own class. At present, Professor Voskresensky is the Head of piano chair at the Moscow Conservatoire. His pupils have won 111 prizes in international competitions, among them 49 gold medals.
He has participated as juror for international competitions in London, Leeds, Sydney, Tel Aviv and others as well as for the Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Competitions in Moscow. He continues to be Chairman of the Jury for the Scriabin International Competition in Moscow.
Mikhail Voskresensky is the President of the Scriabin International Society, and Guest Professor in the Toho Gakuen School in Tokyo.
Professor Voskresensky gives numerous master classes in Russia and abroad. In the last 3 years, he gave master classes in Bejing, Lissabon, Paris, and Tokyo. The Julliard School invited Professor Voskresensky to teach for the period of three weeks in this famous stronghold of American pianism.
