Subcollection: Piano Emsley's music relates to time... and timelessness. To Kantian philosophy... to conceptual thought... to noumenal reality. In simpler terms, music itself can transcend time, being the universal language of Pythagoras and modern science - the Divine Art. Played by Topologies, one of the UK's foremost contemporary music ensembles, and featuring Ian Pace on solo piano tracks.

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Quartet Two major works for string quartet which both present structured, yet "polystylistic" forms- attuned to the modern ear, which is used to hearing "sound bites" - and what Schwartz calls "collage-oriented". It is rare to find music written with so much emphasis on the listener

Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble John Turner, Peter Lawson, Philip Edwards, Goerge Nicholson, Alison Wells, Keith Elcombe, Jonathan Price.
George Nicholson says that he is always alert to the challenge of working with the grain of every instrument he writes for, exploring and exploiting its potential to the full. As a result his music makes virtuoso demands on the players. His style is eclectic drawing on many genres (including jazz scat-singing in "For Miles") making it full of interest.

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Clarinet Among the so-varied styles of music being written and constructed today, there remains a vibrant and strong lyrical tradition, focussed on the English school. Proving that such work is still fresh and relevant, here are exquisite pieces for clarinet, recorder and string quartet by Robert Crawford and the late John Veale. Modern idioms which also incorporate classical and Romantic traditions.
See also the second disc in this series (msv28522)
This disc includes chamber music by two composers, roughly contemporaries, both of whose compositional careers are marked by a substantial silence in middle age, but for very different reasons. In the case of John Veale (1922-2006), it was because he felt that the musical climate had become inimical to his style (Howard Ferguson and John Jeffreys were two other distinguished composers who gave up composing for similar reasons), whereas in the case of Robert Crawford (b1925) it was because the demands of his career as a busy BBC music producer in Glasgow took up all his time and energy.
All six works are completely accessible - and in fact are a delight. As far as can be checked, there are no other recordings of any of the works available at this time. |
