The Glory Tree - Chamber works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad

The Glory Tree - Chamber works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad
ID: CHRCD021
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

Cheryl Frances-Hoad has a unique and special compositional voice, recently becoming the youngest composer to win two prizes in the same year at the British Composer Awards, in 2010.

Since winning the BBC Young Composer Competition in 1996, at the age of 15, Cherylʼs works have garnered high praise and awards from all quarters. Over recent years, she has had numerous notable successes, with commissions including solo, chamber, orchestral and choral works, as well as opera.
Champs Hill Records is delighted to present this collection of Cherylʼs chamber music, performed in many cases by the musicians who commissioned and gave the premiere performances of the works.

“The Glory Tree had remarkable scoring, stratospheric singing and was performed with shamanic authority, her final scream reverberating through the cloisters.” Keith Bruce, The Herald.

The songs of the title work on this disc - The Glory Tree - are arresting settings, in original Anglo-Saxon, from The Dream of the Rood and Judith, treated as the utterances of Shamanic ritual.
Shamanism also provides the inspiration for the solo violin work The Snow Woman written for, and played here by, Natalia Lomeiko.

These works are typical of the fertile soil for musical invention which Cheryl Frances-Hoad finds in literary inspiration. Stories, poems or literary ideas have provided the spark for many works on this disc, performed by exceptionally talented musicians, including Nicholas Daniel (oboe), the Lenvai String Trio, the Kriesler Ensemble, Leonid Gorokhov (ʻcello), the London Mozart Trio, Ensemble na Mara, and others.
The disc is packed with 77mins of music, all newly recorded in the Music Room at Champs Hill.

Emanuel Ensemble - Kapustin - Gaubert - Schumann - Borne - Farrenc - Piazzolla

Emanuel Ensemble - Kapustin - Gaubert - Schumann - Borne - Farrenc - Piazzolla
ID: CHRCD023
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

The Emanuel Ensemble - a flexible chamber group - here present an enticing recital programme for flute, cello and piano, showcasing the undoubted talents of these three acclaimed young players.

The brilliant cellist Louisa Tuck is the youngest Principal of any UK orchestra, and in addition to the Trio repertoire on this disc she also performs Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano, with the sought-after young pianist John Reid. Requiring considerable virtuosity in the concluding portion, and a projection of dreamy Romantic feeling in the opening, this work is of a perfect two-part structure. Anna Stokes, a much in-demand flautist, takes the solo role too, in Borne’s bravura Fantasie Brilliante, composed on themes from Bizet’s Carmen - its high point the increasingly flashy variations on the celebrated Habenera theme. This exuberant CD opens with Piazolla’s La muerte del Angel, and its decisive, thrusting climax sets up the rest of the disc. Gaubert’s souful Piece Romantique (also written for the CD’s central combination of flute, cello and piano) has a lyric charm and an eventide contentment; in stark contrast to the joyous Trio by Nikolai Kapustin. Seemingly improvisatory, this three-movement piece works out its themes thoroughly and fantastically, with walking basses, hypnotic ostinatos, and solo spots’ for each instrument. In turns languidly nostalgic and capricious, this jazz-based Trio is one of the most popular works of Kapustin’s output, and rounds off with an insouciant and irresistible display of animal vitality.

As Louise Farrenc’s work is being rediscovered, it looks as though she may have been the most important female composer of the first half of the 19th century. Her Trio in E minor, performed by the Emanuel Ensemble for this recital, is written in full classical sonata form, showing considerable contrapuntal artistry. The work concludes in effervescent high spirits, bringing proceedings to a close in high good humour.

A. VIVALDI - 4 Seasons of Love - IL Tempio Armonico
ID: STR33883
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Cello

Stradivarius is very proud to present Antonio Vivaldi’s masterpiece in a new recording. Il Tempio Armonico rediscovers the deepest essence of The Four Seasons with a performance based on the original manuscripts and carried out 'a parti reali', with arpa doppia and harpsichord as continuo. The outcome is a performance that succeeds in giving back the original freshness, charm and grace of Vivaldi’s masterpiece.

The CD is enriched by two other Concertos by Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto Madrigalesco RV129 and Concerto in C major RV114.

Since its foundation in 1999, Il Tempio Armonico, led by Alberto Rasi, aims for authenticity in performance practice and to re-create music's original appeal and vitality. The musicians of the ensemble are enriched by playing with numerous world-renowned groups and soloists including T. Koopman, J. Savall, M. Huggett and G. Carmignola.

In 2008 Bussotti visited Japan and gave seminars and composition lessons, also presenting an exhibition of his most significant pittografie (scores, drawings) at the Italian Culture Institute of Tokyo. These live recordings bear witness to the concerts that were organised in his honour: in which performances of 'indeterminate' or 'graphic' scores (typical of Bussotti) prevailed.
