This double-disc set brought both a record label and a composer new to my ears. Thuille, who lived until 1907, was from the Tyrol and a close friend on and off of Richard Strauss. He was a pupil of Rheinberger and as a pedagogue among his own students were Ernest Bloch and Hermann Abendroth. He was a prolific though rather conservative composer and for a time was known for his operas. However, his small fame now lies mainly with his chamber music, as well as a piano concerto and a symphony. His book on harmony was a standard for many years and constitutes his standing in some musical circles.

All four of these chamber works are absolutely gorgeous, full of lovely melody and an almost ecstatic beauty. Thuille’s influences in the Sextet may recall Brahms or even Wagner at various points. There aren’t many good works for wind quintet and piano, and this one should be heard much more frequently. The French horn is very predominant, as it is in much of Richard Strauss’ music. The piano is also given an important role that sometimes expands to almost piano concerto proportions. The Larghetto second movement of the four is especially lovely, with an autumnal sort of sound that reminds one of Brahms. The Vivace finale is a speedy summing-up of the sextet, with already-heard thematic material going from instrument to instrument, and with a good humor thruout.

In the more conservative Trio one may hear influences of Borodin or Franck. Though it has some passages suffused with sorrow, the prevailing mood - especially by the fourth movement finale - is one of joy and good feeling. The two Piano Quintets were composed 21 years apart, the G minor being the early one, dating from 1880. It has a cyclic design in its three short movements, with a prayer-like central slow movement sounding like Brahms. The 1901 Piano Quintet Op. 20 is regarded as the best-known of all of Thuille’s chamber works. Almost 45 minutes in length, it balances a rather traditional approach with plenty of post-Wagnerian chromaticism. Thruout the four-movement work one hears influences of a Richard Strauss-like waltz feeling. The Adagio second movement begins with a chorale-like passage which may remind listeners of Bruckner, as it builds to a massive architectural central climax. The finale brings together some of the previous themes in a hymn-like setting, similar to many of Thuille’s works of this period.

The performances on both CDs are first rate, as are the sonics. This is one of the most enjoyable chamber music collections I have heard in years.

Endymion celebrates its 30th anniversary with a survey of new commissions from composers who have worked with the ensemble, from senior figures in British music - such as Anthony Payne, Simon Bainbridge and Simon Holt, and younger but established talents like Morgan Hayes and Dai Fujikura - to those at an early stage of their career, such as Joanna Bailie, James Weeks and Naomi Pinnock.
Endymion was formed in 1979 from a group of outstanding National Youth Orchestra students and retains most of its original players.
Endymion has been described as one of the few chamber groups as at home with Mozart as with Birtwistle.
Endymion’s Sound Census project has reached beyond the new pieces on this disc, to include primary and secondary school students in the London Boroughs of Westminster, Camden and Tower Hamlets. Seven Alevel and GCSE students created new pieces in close collaboration with Endymion players.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of the outstanding St Petersburg pianist Grigory Sokolov.

This musician’s performance is notable for particular concentration and complete immersion in the musical element. His manner amazes with perfection of technique in the absence of external effects of any kind.

Grigory Sokolov is one of the few modern pianists who always include intellectual piano masterpieces in their programmes, which requires a special mood from both the performer and the audience - Beethoven’s sonatas of the latter period, J S Bach’s 'The Art of Fugue', Brahms’ last pieces.

Most of Sokolov’s recordings were made from live broadcasts in Leningrad/St Petersburg and Moscow - he prefers concert performances to studio work.

This set combines the large-scale dramatic canvases of Beethoven’s sonatas with the restless romantic heroics of Scriabin’s Third Sonata where Sokolov emphasizes the Promethean spirit without erasing the individuality of the Russian genius of the 20th century.

However, what makes this set particularly interesting is Grigory Sokolov’s recordings of the works by his contemporary, Leningrad composer Boris Arapov. The piano sonata and concerto for violin, piano, percussion and chamber orchestra recorded by the pianist are released on Melodiya for the first time.

Grigory Sokolov made the featured recordings of the works by Beethoven, Scriabin and Arapov between 1972 and 1988.

Firma Melodiya continues the series of compact discs dedicated to the December Evenings Festival that takes place at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. This album, like the previous one, is dedicated to the 1985 festival 'World of Romanticism' and includes recordings featuring Sviatoslav Richter.

The atmosphere of December Evenings, an event initiated by the great pianist, differed from usual philharmonic concerts. The spirit of music as an inseparable part of the 'fusion of arts' the romanticists dreamt of was invisibly felt in each number; a sensitive listener can catch it in these, perhaps technically imperfect, concert recordings from thirty years ago.

The works by Schubert, Schumann and Chopin were performed by Sviatoslav Richter in ensemble with his outstanding contemporaries, violinist and David Oistrakh’s student Oleg Kogan who passed away prematurely, violist Yuri Bashmet, cellist Natalia Gutman and clarinettist Anatoly Kamyshov.

Along with popular compositions (Chopin’s Polonaise-fantaisie, Ballade and Cello Sonata, and Schubert’s Sonata for violin and piano), the programme featured works which were less known to the audience - Schumann’s Piano Trio, his late opuses Fairy Tale Pictures, Op.113 for viola and piano and Fantasy Pieces, Op.73, in their original version for clarinet and piano.

Chopin:
Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65
Natalia Gutman (cello)

Polonaise No. 7 in A flat major, Op. 61 'Polonaise-fantaisie'
Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52

Schubert:
Grand Duo for Violin and Piano in A Major, D574

Oleg Kagan (violin)

Schumann:
Fantasiestücke, Op. 73
Anatoly Kamyshev (clarinet)

Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 63
Oleg Kagan (violin), Natalia Gutman (cello),

Märchenbilder (4), Op. 113
Yuri Bashmet (viola)
