Late Renaissance and early Baroque

Little is known about one of the most productive of Italian musicians, Adriano Banchieri. Relegated to a marginal sector of Renaissance history, still defined by madrigals, Banchieri lived in the most extraordinary innovative period of Italian 'harmonic' music: we find clear signs of a new 17th-Century sensibility in adaptation, or rather in making the word serve representational needs, in the use of the basso concertante and in the extensive use of continuo. The two works presented on this CD represent the chronological heart of Banchieri’s most typical production and may be appreciated in modern recordings for the first time: this is an ambitious project to shed light on Italian 'minor' musical history of the end of the 16th century.

Die Spinne im Netz (The Spider in the Web) - Music from Nuremberg Prints of the 16th Century.

Type: CD
Collection:
Renaissance
Subcollection: Voices and Chamber Ensemble

At the beginning of the 16th century Nuremberg (“The spider in the web”) was a northern European centre in which many threads of international music life came together. Early on Nuremberg had established itself as a centre of book printing. The first printing-offices that occupied themselves seriously with the printing of music, however, were those of Hieronymus Formschneider and Johannes Petreius. Most of the pieces on this recording are taken from these collections of three-part music. They contain international repertoire, including old masterworks such as Caecox and Tandernaken by Alexander Agricola, but also arrangements of German folk songs and ballads, as well as French compositions and more recent Italian forms.

Orlando Di Lasso - Psalmi Poenitentialis. Kammerchor Josquin Des Prez

Renaissance

This collection includes sung settings of works by traditional improvisatory Renaissance poets from Tuscany and Corsica, as well as instrumental pieces of the period. Lucidarium specialises in medieval and Renaissance music and have earned popular and critical acclaim.

Lucidarium is an ensemble specializing in medieval and Renaissance music. Each program is the fruit of a long period of research and preparation in various fields, resulting in a different sonority for each program: a vivacious combination of voices and instruments with the freedom in execution which comes from a solid knowledge of musical style and historical background. Although the research for the various projects is the responsibility of its two directors, the final product is developed collectively, the result of rehearsals where each musician is fully involved in the creative process. From its founding, this combination of meticulous preparation, joyful improvisation and energetic music-making has brought both popular and critical acclaim to the ensemble.
