Pianist and composer, Emile Naoumoff started his concert career at an early age. The child-prodigy demonstrated his great talent and maturity not only as a performer but also with his very first attempts in composing. His musical formation took place in Paris, where he began his studies at the beginning of the 1970s. Mr. Naoumoff graduated from the Paris Conservatoire as a pupil of Nadia Boulanger, one of the greatest ladies in world music. Later his performing and creative careers developed in parallel. This CD includes Mr. Naumoff's piano transcription of Tchaikovsky's overture-fantasy Romeo and Juliet. The complete programme - recorded live at a concert in Paris - presents the pianist as a master of sound-production, a musician of keen sensitivity and brilliant technique in outlining the essential features of the styles of the four Russian composers. |

The Bulgarian public already knows the violinist Sergiu Schwartz and a number of young violinists have received priceless advice during his master classes. Mr. Schwartz was born in Romania but now lives in Florida, USA. He is a pupil of the Bucharest School of Music, of Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv, of Guildhall School of Music in London and Juilliard School in New York, and is one of the most successful violinists, invited to perform with the most famous orchestras and at prestigious festivals. In this recording he plays on the ex Wilhelmi Lorenzo Storioni violin, made in Cremona in 1780. The idea to bring together some of the most loved both by the public and the performers compositions for violin from the 19th century is accomplished masterly by Sergiu Schwartz and Ruzhka Charakchieva who form a magnificent ensemble. Especially strong is their interpretation of the big sonatas by Brahms - No. 3 in D minor, and by Cesar Franck - in A major, which are basic for every well-known violinist. Dominating in them are the style and the mastered emotion, typical for these composers. At the same time there is a feeling of stability and getting deep to the heart of the message of these works. Sergiu Schwartz has a very beautiful, warm, expressive tone, whose vibrations are in harmony with the emotional content of the performed music. In each virtuoso piece, Schwartz and Charaktchieva emphasize the diversity of ideas and the strength of their personalities as musicians, perfectly synchronized in this programme.

The CD of the world famous Bulgarian National Radio Children's Choir, conducted by Hristo Nedyalkov, is dedicated to the choir's 40th anniversary. It includes 16 of the best performances of this ensemble with a huge repertoire worthy of respect. During the past 40 years many Bulgarian and foreign composers have created hundreds of songs for it. The choir became a vital part of the Bulgarian culture, as well as a focal point for children's musical education. Wide audiences have had the chance to enter the world of art under the guidance of these sincere and spontaneous messengers.
The qualities of the Radio Choir have always been emphasized, in every place where it toured. Its visits to Japan for example are 14 and it has given about 350 concerts in 150 towns! Such figures inspire respect and give an idea about the interest and the value of the art of the Bulgarian National Radio Children's Choir and its founder and conductor Hristo Nedyalkov, an exceptional personality in Bulgarian musical life.
This CD gives an idea about the varied talents and the choir's high artistic achievements. It contains pearls both from the Bulgarian and the world choral legacy, like Schubert's Serenade and Tchaikovsky's Little Nightingale, some virtuoso songs by Georgi Kostov, Alexander Tekeliev, the humorous compositions by Nikolai Kaufmann and the poetic impression Winter Song by Hristo Nedyalkov. Children from the choir perform the solo parts. The works are arranged with taste along with the desire to present the performing abilities of the ensemble from all sides.

While 19th century Western Europe music includes different styles and schools, there is no such division among Russian composers. During that time Russia marks a period of real national upsurge in enhancing the Russian nation. For this reason, the Russian composers turn back to the traditional village folklore and consider it basic for the future development of Russian musical culture. Glinka was the first to look back to the Russian musical heritage. His works provide a basis for the Russian classical music school. The realistic traditions in his music are followed also by the next generation of composers.
At the end of the 50s and the beginning of the 60s a group of composers (Balakirev, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui) created the group “The Five”, dedicated to the production of a specifically Russian brand of music and truthful representation of real life. They follow the path of Glinka and Dargomizhsky in creating works which are closely connected to folk art. However, they also stand out with their brilliant artistic talent and the innovations they made in opera, symphonic and chamber music. Tchaikovsky also shares their outlook. He often uses Russian folklore, but is interested mainly in the inner life of man, and not in large-scale historical dramas. In this sense, his music is more closely related to everyday romance, than to the traditional folklore. Tchaikovsky also creates a new type of ballet music. Music had mainly accompaniment functions before him. He makes it stand on its own in the whole performance. By employing the expressive means of symphonic music, the composer reveals the dramatic content of the work.
20th century composers are also influenced by their predecessors. They develop the folk traditions and enrich them with the expressive means of their time. |

Gega New Music Company pays special attention to featuring liturgical music in its catalogue. Up to now the company has released a number of recordings with liturgical chants, which are a part of the usual festive liturgies. This is the first complete recording in Bulgaria of the Paschal Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, in observation of the East-Orthodox canon the way it is performed at the St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral, together with the choir performance, chants and the bell chimes of the Cathedral. The St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral was consecrated on September 12, 1924. Three years later (1927) Apostol Nikolaev established the mixed Choir with the Cathedral, which, ever since its foundation, has taken part in all church events and festive liturgies. In 1936, Prof Dobri Hristov, a great Bulgarian composer and conductor, student of Antonin Dvorak at the Prague Conservatory, took the position of conductor. D. Hristov is the author of a number of religious works, most of which were composed especially for the Cathedral's choir and they are still present in its repertoire. After Maestro Dobri Hristov, the choir was conducted in the course of 36 years by Angel Popkonstantinov, and since 1978 his conductor has been Dimitar Dimitrov. He graduated from the ”St. John of Rila” Sofia Ecclesiastic Seminary, the “St. Kliment of Ohrid” Academy of Theology, and the State Academy of Music in Sofia. While a student, in 1967, together with his colleagues from the Academy of Theology, he founded the “St. John Koukouzeles - Angeloglasniyat” Chamber Ensemble, whose conductor he has been ever since. He has been teaching religious music at the Department of Theology with the “St. Kliment Ohridsky” Sofia University and at the “Venerable Paisii of Hilendar” Subsidiary of the Plovdiv University in Kardjali. He also reads lectures in liturgical order at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music. Gega New released the present double CD album with this unique recording to mark the 80th anniversary from the consecration of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The programme is also dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of Christ's Nativity. |

The Bulgarian opera school is well-known throughout the world. Many Bulgarian opera singers perform at the most renowned opera stages and impress with their performance. One of them is the bass Pavel Gerdjikov. What makes him different from other famous Bulgarian singers is that he builds his career mainly in Bulgaria along with his numerous guest-performances which have made him world-famous.
Pavel Gerdjikov has taken an interest in music ever since his early childhood: he had violin and piano lessons, played in orchestras, sang in choirs, conducted… He studied at the Sofia Academy of Music under Prof. Anna Todorova and Prof. Ilia Yosifov and as he admits himself, many of his teachers in theoretical subjects left a lasting influence upon him: Prof. Stoyan Djudjev, Lyubomir Pipkov, Dragan Kardjiev. His first appointment was in the Berlin Comische Oper. In 1962 he was enlisted with the Sofia Opera and since then he has participated in all its productions. He has performed with the greatest opera names in Bulgaria: Lyubomir Bodurov, Dimitar Uzunov, Nikolai Ghiaurov, Nikola Nikolov, Alexandrina Milcheva, Raina Kabaivanska, Valeri Popova, Dimitar Petkov, Assen Selimsky, Milkana Nikolova, Liliana Bareva … He has worked with renowned conductors and directors in many countries world-wide: in almost all big European opera theatres and stages, in Japan, Australia, America. In one of his interviews Pavel Gerdjikiv mentions some of his participations: Don Juan - the performances in Salzburg with the Mozarteum Orchestra, The Queen of Spades in Gleinborn, some of his concerts in Melbourne and Sydney, the Tchaikovsky recital at the Richter Festival in Moscow. In the Mozart Sal in Vienna he sang in Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony, which was a premiere of the work outside the then USSR.
His repertoire includes all famous traditional bass parts. But besides them, he participates as a soloist in Bulgarian opera and cantata-oratorial works. He is deeply convinced that “it is impossible for a person to become a complete actor, singer or musician if he lacks in his own national musical culture… When I started studying at the Academy, I sang songs by Dobri Hristov, Pancho Vladigerov, Lyubomir Pipkov, Goleminov. After that I started singing the Fourth Symphony and The Boyana Master by Konstantin Iliev, The Apology of Socrates by Simeon Pironkov, Pentagram for bass and orchestra by Ivan Marinov. Still later I turned to the songs cycle “Foreign Poets” by Lyubomir Pipkov, and then I began to get interested in Shostakovich, his 13th and 14th Symphony… Thanks to the Bulgarian music, I began to get interested in Honegger, Bartok, Britten, Shostakovich (also the songs). Bulgarian music provoked me and opened my mind to the foreign contemporary music.
Pavel Gerdjikov is also an opera director. His preferences in this field are connected not only with the classical opera repertoire, but also with contemporary Bulgarian and foreign music. Besides developing his career as a singer and a director, Pavel Gerdjikov devotes a lot of time to his teaching activity. In 1970 he started teaching at the Academy of Music in Sofia and he is still one of the most loved teachers among the students. This is not surprising, having in mind that he is a great actor and a highly-accomplished person, with an affinity to the refined style of speaking. His students have the opportunity to know a really encyclopaedic personality, who reveals to them the vast world of art.

The Bulgarian National Radio Children’s Choir was founded in 1960. Its founder and conductor since the beginning has been academician Hristo NEDYALKOV. During these 50 years the choir has been on 80 tours and it has given over 2000 concerts in 32 countries. Its repertoire includes about 800 songs written by Bulgarian and foreign composers. They have been recorded and released on many vinyl records and compact discs.
The young singers in the choir receive real vocal mastership schooling. It is thus natural that some of them choose singing as a profession, while the rest cherish their love for music throughout their whole life.
In this jubilee release, the children’s choir presents an interesting and varied programme, which includes songs by Bulgarian composers, opera choruses and works from the world music classics.
