Michael Nyman - McAlmont and Nyman - The Glare

Michael Nyman - McAlmont and Nyman - The Glare
ID: MNRCD116
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: World Music
Subcollection: Vocal and Piano

For 'The Glare', McAlmont selected various Nyman compositions and turned to world news for inspiration. These new songs, written in the first person, draw on a variety of subjects from 21st century piracy (Going to America), lothario world leaders (In Rai Don Giovanni) drug mules (In Laos) and banking errors (Take the money and Run). David McAlmont's exquisite voice has enthralled soul and jazz fans both as a solo artist and as one half of the hit-making duo McAlmont and Butler ''One day he will open his mouth and a cathedral will fall out'' Melody Maker. Michael Nyman is one of the UK's most prestigious and innovative composers whose work reached its widest audience through his film scores for The Piano, Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover and The Draughtsman's Contract (available on MN Records)

Michael Nyman and David McAlmont first met at the Freud Museum in London in the summer of 2000. They had both been invited to the launch of Nose Book: Representations of the Nose in Literature and the Arts by the author Victoria De Rijke. David had been a student of Victoria’s at Middlesex Polytechnic and the score of Michael's Nose-List Song (1985) was included in the book.

Michael and David talked and discovered that they were signed to the same record label, Virgin, at the time. Years before, David had become 'utterly entranced' by Nyman's soundtrack to Peter Greenaway’s film The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover and soon after he acquired the box set of Nyman's soundtracks became a huge fan.

In the years following the Nose/ Freud meeting it was often mentioned on the grapevine that Michael might be interested in working with David but this was all hearsay until 2007 when David, in a state of creative frustration, decided to join Facebook. Nyman contacted him within a week. They recollected their first encounter and quickly began plotting a collaboration.

Michael mentioned that he was totally unable to write his own song texts and David realised that he had become bored with 'the navel-gazing futility of writing love songs about his own feelings' and at 40 wanted to create something more worthwhile with his lyric writing

At this point Géricault’s painting The Raft of the Medusa emerged as a subject of interest to both musicians as David indicated that he had become fascinated with the life of the 19th century French painter - especially his determination to create documentary canvases based on contemporary life: battle-field injury, asylum inmates and shipwreck memoirs.

But this project was soon replaced by the current project where David wrote new songs based on contemporary news stories over pre-existing Nyman compositions. McAlmont's subject matter explores pertinent subjects as varied as 21st century piracy (Going to America), trafficked prostitution in Europe (City of Turin), sexually-charged world leaders (In Rai Don Giovanni), assisted suicide (Friendly Fire), reality television (The Glare), African orphan migration (Fever Sticks and Bones), banking errors (Take the Money and Run)and drug mules (In Laos).

David felt strongly that the songs were most effective if written from the first person point of view of the individual characters discovered in the researched reports to create an emotional engagement with the subjects that is lost by the time their stories emerge in the glare of the 24 hour news media. This process of course caused initial concern for McAlmont because he was taking already brilliant compositions, adding to and adjusting them. But fortunately, Michael Nyman was delighted with the result.

A new milestone in electronica and trance music. The perfect union between tradition and contemporary art. The ancient sciamanic tarantella ritual reinterpreted by one of it's most known artists in a new, contemporary way. The soundtrack for the perfect spiritual rave by tarantella Guru Antonio Infantino feauturing electronica Master Eraldo Bernocchi.

Antonio Infantino

In 1991 Antonio Infantino receives the AWARD and the HONORIS CAUSA DEGREE in Science, Litterature and Art from the Belgium Real Accademy.

Antonio Infantino was born In Sabaudia (LT) in 1944. "You will never know where does he come from, you won't know where he is going. He moves like clouds". That is what is written about him in an effective decription that begins the volume "Antonio Infantino: danza cosmica, colore, suono ed architettura" published in 1996, by the European Parlament, that host his big anthologic exposition.

The "nomadism" of Infantino, that brings him from Tricarico (not far from Metaponto in Basilicata, residence of the mathematician and philosopher Pitagora) to Florence, Brazil, Belgium, Holland, etc is not only physical but is above all cultural and full of discipline. The "Tarantola dell'arte", this virus that never leaves him and that drives him toward new and original discoveries, makes him becoming an architect (Florence, 1972, Theses on "natural and artificial space, and on the "n" dimensions"), but also a musician, a poet, a painter, a theater producer, an anthropologist, leaving a piece of dream in every field that he has touched.

In 1973/74 he teached the garden's Art in the faculty of architecture of the University of Florence. In Brasil, Belgium, Italy he did some urbans projects, parks, churchs, hospitals, theaters, buldings, houses, appartements, gardens, furnitures and objects, and all those projects has been realized.

Within all "the things made", as he calls them, that made him becoming famous, it is important to remember the constitution of his musical band: "I Tarantolati di Tricatico". When he comes back from Egypt and Creta, Infantino, in 1975, makes a research on the mediterranean arts, remembering the experiences that he lived and creates a new music repertory using the Lacano dialect, with particolar linguistic sonorities, combined with minimal chords and with an important percussion base. Within Antonio Infantino successes with his Tarantolati: "La Gatta Mammona", used again, in 1997, with the band "99 posse", and Infantino's composition "AVOLA", that he played in the Dario Fo show "Ci ragiono e canto".

In 1966 Feltrinelli published some of his compositions as a poet:"I denti cariati e la patria" with a preface made by Fernanda Pivano. He doesn't get in "the italian City of Light" by mistake: Infantino has not only participated at the readings with Allen Ginsberg, but it was also one of the star in the italian beat, as it is said in an article from il Corriere Della Sera, when "il tarantolato" stayed a night in jail because he was going around milan with a crown on his head. An individual that really incarns the best things of the cultures and the spectacles of last 30 years.

Magician, mistic, philosopher and scientist, Infantino put all discipline in one dimention called: Art, that for him means "a brige between the individual mind and the spiritual mind".

Thousands of persons, in Italy and from everywhere in the world, saw his spectacles, expositions, performances, radio and tv shows. The press realized a lot of articles about his work.

In 2003 Infantino has been invited to realize a Special Event About Visual Art, Music, Theater and dance, TARA'n'TRANCE Techno Cathatic Opera, in the gardens of the Biennale di Venezia.

Eternal Dance - Atman

Eternal Dance - Atman
ID: ARNR2598
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Ethno

From Bombay and Calcutta to London to Chicago, any place that has a large Indian population is likely to be coming up with some interesting East/West hybrids. And such a hybrid can also have an Italian connection; Atman's Eternal Dance, for example, was edited and mastered in Florence, Italy. For Atman, East/West means fusing Indian music with Euro-dance music and electronica. On this CD, synthesizers, keyboard, and samplers are heard alongside traditional, time-honored Indian instruments like the sitar and tabla drums. Another instrument that is employed on Eternal Dance is the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute that doesn't come from either India or Europe; the shakuhachi was brought to Japan by Chinese travelers in the eighth century and went on to become Japan's most famous wind instrument. You would never hear the shakuhachi on a traditional Indian recording, but then, Eternal Dance isn't meant to be a traditional Indian recording. Atman is all about taking liberties with Indian elements, and that not only means being influenced by modern American and European styles, it also means being able to use an instrument that is revered in Japan (where Buddhist monks consider the shakuhachi sacred). While a lot of modern Indian pop favors secular lyrics, Eternal Dance maintains a spiritual, Hindu-minded outlook on haunting tracks like "Dancing With the Goddess," "I Am," and "Govinda." The latter, in fact, takes its name from one of the Hindu deities; in Hinduism, Govinda is believed to be a manifestation of God Almighty. Eternal Dance isn't for Indian purists, but those who hold Indian music, dance music, and electronica in equally high regard will find a lot to admire about this intriguing CD. ˜ Alex Henderson, Rovi All Music Guide
