70 years ago, from June to October, the German Luftwaffe tried to bomb Great Britain into submission. It never happened. British courage and resourcefulness triumphed. These events are celebrated in music and song on the latest release of The Carl Davis Collection. Here are the songs people sang, the film scores they loved and heard on the radio. A brilliant cast of soloists together with the BBC-CO and The Brighton Festival Chorus play and sing their hearts out just as people did in 1940.
This Album features: Claire Sweeney , Mary Carewe, Frances McCafferty, Richard Suart, Sarah Eyden, Brighton Festival Chorus and BBC Concert Orchestra all conducted by Carl Davis in a tremendous album of new orchestrations of the old favourites from World War II, never before performed in this format.
Released to coincide with the Anniversary of The Battle of Britain, this June, Carl Davis will be performing selections of the album at several concerts throughout June and July including Dunsfold Park, Surrey, June 5, Lichfield, July 9 and Liverpool, July 10.
The Carl Davis Collection will be taking adverts out in BBC Music Magazine and Classic FM and the album will be featured regularly on Radio 2. There will be a series of syndicated interviews with Carl and Claire Sweeney in the coming months on radio and interviews on television all centred on the release of Give Me A Smile

A new recording of classic Beatles tracks, conducted by Carl Davis and played by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

A chance remark sparked off this CD. My old friend, Sandra Parr, Concerts Manager and backbone of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra said in passing, ‘You know we are always being asked to play Beatles, but we don’t have anything’. I replied, ‘I’ll give you something to play’. Indeed, the original recordings are still with us and I feel for a long time yet. But the melodies are very strong in themselves and if arranged sensitively would be a very pleasurable CD and fulfil a need. It would demonstrate the range of their talent from the early rock and roll influences to the quirky, with my own special preference for Paul McCartney’s soulful ballads. Carl Davis, March 2011
This album of The Beatles for Orchestra consists mainly of brand new orchestral arrangements of some of the most memorable Beatle compositions.
The Rhythm section was put down at Abbey Road using some of the finest session musicians in their field and with the Abbey Road Engineers. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra was then recorded in Liverpool again using the Abbey Road mobile unit and engineers, finally the album was mixed at the Penthouse Suite at Abbey Road, to provide this unique recording of The Beatles for Orchestra.

Michael Nyman - Nyman / Greenaway Revisited - The Composers Cut Series - Vol. 2

Michael Nyman - Nyman / Greenaway Revisited - The Composers Cut Series - Vol. 2

Recorded in April 2005
The pictures in the CD, including the one of the CD cover are all taken by Michael Nyman.

Music composed, conducted and produced by Michael Nyman

"The purpose of the Composer's Cut series is to present music from my soundtracks in a state of continuous evolution. As I transferred particular cues from film to concert hall both musical structures changed and performance styles developed, enabling the music, perhaps, to realise its true potential. So these recordings represent the Michael Nyman Band's state-of-performance as of spring 2005." - MN August 2005

Nyman/Greenaway revisited is a collection of the most popular music from the five soundtracks provided by the composer for Peter Greenaway's feature films from 1982 - 1991. Music from The Draughtsman's Contract, A Zed and Two Noughts, Drowning By Numbers, The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover, & Prospero's Books is included.

Greenaway & Nyman had a very different relationship from that of most directors/composers, with Greenaway giving Nyman immense scope for the music. Nyman responded in kind with some of the best film music of the last quarter century. The working methods even varied from film to film. While the score of Zed and Two Noughts was composed without the composer even having seen a single frame of the film, the climactic scene of The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover was quite deliberately choreographed to the pre-existing piece Memorial. The music for these films became widely known & hugely influential on a succeeding generation of composers and directors.

One of Nyman's most recently completed film scores (for The Libertine) returns the composer to a film with a 17th century setting, with director Laurence Dunmore claiming it was the memory of hearing the music to A Zed and Two Noughts many years ago that led him to commissioning Nyman for this film, while Michael Winterbottom (a director who has also worked extensively with Nyman), used music from The Draughtsman's Contract for his newest film A Cock and Bull Story. This collection of music has also become immensely well known to a wide public audience. Among the most frequently performed contemporary music, whether on classical radio stations, or through use in film, TV programming or advertising use, these pieces are as familiar to a mainstream audience as many contemporary pop and rock songs.

Michael Nyman and Peter Greenaway had already collaborated on six experimental films prior to 1982's The Draughtsman's Contract, but it was this film, made with a full cinematic release in mind that brought both director and composer to the attention of the more mainstream film audience. To match the film's 17th century setting, each of the pieces composed for the film took an element of a piece - some quite fragmentary - from English composer Henry Purcell as an inspiration or starting point. While this allowed the music to match the period portrayed, Nyman's use of elements in the Michael Nyman Band such as saxophones and electric bass, instruments that hadn't existed in Purcell's time, along with his own compositional style gave the music a late 20th century modernity that resonated with the audience. The soundtrack became Nyman's first international success in the area of film music and some of the pieces composed for this film remain hugely popular with concert audiences to the present day.

As the composer notes in his introduction to the album, the music has altered and expanded in 23 years' of concerts. Most of the musicians in The Michael Nyman Band are long-term members and their knowledge of every element of the music and confidence with the material is reflected in the quality of these performances recorded at Abbey Road Studios in April 2005. The music for The Draughtsman's Contract is familiar to a vast audience who've almost certainly never even seen the film as it has been extensively used in advertising and is among the most frequently played contemporary music on classical radio stations around the world.

• Another recording of Bruckner from Sir Roger
Norrington and the RSO Stuttgart des SWR
• Historical Informed Performance practice meets a
modern symphony orchestra with gorgeous results
• A truly authentic sounding 9th - performed as the
composer left it - as a three-movement torso
During the past decade, Roger Norrington has left an
extraordinary legacy, recording the major 19th
century symphonic literature. Together with the RSO,
Norrington has artfully adapted the Historically
Informed Performance style to the sonic possibilities
of a modern symphony orchestra. In addition to
various Mahler symphonies, Norrington has to date
released a series of acclaimed Bruckner
performances on CD. Norrington's approach is
refreshing, relieving the master of his near beatific
status to give him a human face and locate him
squarely in the contentious climate of Fin-de-siècle
Vienna and the Musikverein. With this in mind, while
Bruckner did inscribe his last symphony "dem lieben
Gott gewidmet," Norrington's fresh approach injects a
healthy dose of "worldliness".

• The 16th release in Thomas Fey and the Heidelberger
Sinfoniker`s critically acclaimed journey through the complete
symphonies of Haydn.
• The Heidelberger Sinfoniker is an excellent orchestra, utilizing
Historically Informed Performance practice with a hybrid ensemble
consisting of both modern and historic instruments.
• Fey and his ensembles' recordings have earned global acclaim!
The present recording presents two of "Papa" Haydn's greatest
essays in the symphonic form: Symphony No. 90 in C Major and
Symphony No. 92 in G Major, known as the "Oxford" Symphony.
Both symphonies were part of a three-symphony commission by
Comte d'Ogny for the Concerts de la Loge Olympique, where
Haydn had previously tremendous success with the performances
of his six "Paris" Symphonies.
Symphony No. 92 though referred to as the "Oxford" symphony
was NOT actually the work intended to serve as his "thesis", for
which he was to receive an honorary doctorate. However, this
hardly matters - the score is brilliantly composed and worthy of its
esteemed association with the great English college.
In 2011, Thomas Fey was nominated for a Grammy for his world
premiere recordings of the music of Antonio Salieri. Every new
release of Haydn symphonies from Thomas Fey and his ensemble
is greeted with enthusiasm; truly this is how Haydn should sound
today. To bring this about, Fey’s musicians bridge past and
present, performing both on modern string instruments and
replicas of authentic period woodwind, brass and percussion
instruments.
