Recorded live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 8, 9 November 2007 (Dukas/Van Keulen, Dalbavie, Messiaen, and 13, 14 June 2008 (Zuidam)

1 - 12: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, George Benjamin
13 - 15: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Ingo Metzmacher

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra focused extensively on Messiaen in its 2007-8 season. A major musical figure of the 20th-century, Messiaen (1908-1992) created an entirely unique musical oeuvre in which such divergent elements as divinity, as it relates to Catholicism and other doctrines, ornithology and the synaesthetic perception of sound as colour are all interconnected with his innovative rhythmic and harmonic musical language and tonal organisation. As a thinker and teacher, Messiaen carried out groundbreaking work in music during the second half of the century, but his work as a composer has remained unsurpassed. During this special season, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra programmed works not only by Messiaen himself, but also compositions by his musical predecessors, students and disciples, including three premières of works commissioned by the RCO: Geert van Keulen's orchestration of Paul Dukas's La plainte, au loin, du faune…, Marc-André Dalbavie's La source d'un regard (The Source of a Look) and Robert Zuidam's Adam Interludes.
With this second release in the Horizon CD series, dedicated to contemporary repertoire, RCO Live has captured this resounding homage to Olivier Messiaen in superb five-channel stereo.

Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - M. Jansons

Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - M. Jansons

CDs: 1
Type: SACD
Collection: Orchestral Works

Recorded live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 18, 21 October 2007 and 16, 17 January 2008

Practically on the 120th anniversary of the first performance on 3 November 1888, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra releases a new episode in Mariss Jansons' Mahler cycle: the majestic Symphony No. 5. The history of this world class orchestra and the composer are closely interwined. It was Willem Mengelberg, Chief Conductor from 1895 to 1945, a close compatriot and fierce champion of Mahler's music, running strongly against European and American public taste and critical disdain, who championed Mahler's music with his Amsterdam orchestra and this music has remained on their music stands ever since. Mahler with the RCO is always like coming home. In this recording Jansons underscores more than ever the Fifth's narrative, poetic side. A valuable addition to the RCO's extensive Mahler-discography.

Type: SACD

Recorded Live at Concertgebouw 19, 20, 21 & 23 September 2007 (Alpensinfonie); 18, 21 October 2007, 16, 17 January 2008 (Don Juan)

After the successful release of Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben in 2004, Mariss Jansons and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra once again present two familiar symphonic poems by Richard Strauss, who had close ties with the then fledgling Concertgebouw Orchestra. This CD brings together live performances of Don Juan and Eine Alpensinfonie which were recorded during the 2007-8 season and which met with great acclaim both in and outside the Netherlands.Although Don Juan and Eine Alpensinfonie were not dedicated to Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, as Ein Heldenleben was, both works sound here as if they were written for the Amsterdam-based orchestra.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is famous throughout the world for its interpretations of works in the Classical symphonic repertoire. But, as with its legendary performances of the works of Mahler and Strauss at the beginning of the 20th-century, the orchestra is also open to new developments in contemporary music. Exploring new horizons and sound spaces, the orchestra continues to foster relationships with contemporary composers employing unconventional working methods. Compositions by Theo Verbey, Moritz Eggert, Colin Matthews and Detlev Glanert, the first three having been written specially for the RCO, attest to the orchestra's unrivalled sound inspire tour-de-force performances by the musicians.
A supporter and enthusiastic advocate of such orchestral exploits, conductor Markus Stenz leaves his own unmistakable stamp on these live recordings. Jörgen van Rijen was featured in One to Watch in Gramophone, May issue.A Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award winner, the Verbeij concerto was commisioned by the RCO for him, the youngest member when he joined as principal trombone in 1997.

All concerts given by Bernard Haitink, in his capacity as honorary conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, are considered high points of the Amsterdam concert season.
In March 2010, Haitink made a guest appearance with the orchestra conducting a programme featuring Brahms’s Violin Concerto (with Frank Peter Zimmermann as soloist) and Dmitry Shostakovich’s Fifteenth Symphony. The entire concert was televised live and the audio recording of the Fifteenth Symphony is now presented here on this Super Audio CD release for the pleasure of music lovers everywhere.
In the widely acclaimed Shostakovich cycle realised by Haitink conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1970s, the Fifteenth Symphony was recorded by the LPO. Now nearly 40 years later, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, under the direction of its conductor laureate, is very proud indeed to add the present recording of Shostakovich’s swansong to its discography.
