Schoenburg Gurrelieder - Philharmonia Orchestra, Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor
ID: SIGCD173
CDs: 2
Type: SACD
Collection: Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestra

Acknowledged as the UK’s foremost musical pioneers, with an extraordinary recording legacy, the Philharmonia leads the field for its quality of playing. Together with its relationships with the most sought-after artists, most importantly its Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia Orchestra is at the heart of British musical life.

Esa-Pekka Salonen made his London conducting debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra in September 1983 and he has returned to conduct the Orchestra on a regular basis ever since. This is the first in our series of Philharmonia releases that feature Salonen as conductor and is a hybrid SACD/CD in both stereo and surround. Forthcoming recordings as part of Salonen’s new partnership with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Signum include Mahler’s 6th and 9th symphonies and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.

“[Salonen] brought this extravagant manifestation of late Romanticism to a suitable blazing climax.”
The Evening Standard

“The Philharmonia played as if the music really mattered, with beautifully moulded textures and impeccable attacks.”
The Financial Times

Brahms Symphony No.1 - recorded at the Royal Festival Hall, Hall, Southbank Centre, London, 14 May 2009

Brahms Symphony No.3 - recorded at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London, 22 October 2009

Signum’s first disc of 2011 with the Philharmonia returns to the works of Brahms with his first and third symphonies, conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi.

The dual hindrance of Brahms’s self-criticism and a public expectation of a work to follow or surpass the symphonies of Beethoven, resulted in an unusually long formative period for the first symphony - a gap of over 20 years from 1854 initial sketches to the works premiere in 1876. The result was worth the wait however, dubbed ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’ by the conductor Hans von Bülow following a performance.

By contrast, the third is the shortest of all four of his symphonies and was completed over the summer of 1883. A more lighthearted work, some claim that it is inspired and influenced by Brahms’ close relationship with the singer Hermine Spies at that period in his life.

This recording follows the 2008 release of Brahms second and fourth symphonies with the Philharmonia and Christoph von Dohnanyi.

Box set
Firma Melodiya presents a set of recordings of the great Russian conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky.
'Happiness is to be in music above everything else, in your environment - in Nature, in Love, in
confession and in Thanks be to God”, as the conductor defined his artistic credo.
'People will always be in need for the art of Yevgeny Alexandrovich Mravinsky for it is warmed
with the sacred fire of selfless devotion to the ideal, it knows no compromise, and that’s what its
principal value is all about”, wrote his outstanding colleague Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
Yevgeny Mravinsky led the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic Society
for over fifty years. His mighty conductor’s will, unflagging discipline and highest demands he
placed before himself and his musicians turned the orchestra into one of the best symphony
orchestras of the world that was applauded by the most exacting audiences in Moscow, Leningrad,
Prague, Vienna, Berlin, London, Milan, Venice, New York and Tokyo. Russian and foreign classical
music, masterpieces of romanticism and impressionism, the works of Shostakovich and other
Soviet composers, music of 20th century West European authors - each piece, and what is more,
each performance was a new step for Mravinsky, another milestone on the way to musical Truth.
Having reached his artistic maturity, the conductor refused the practice of studio
recordings recognizing just the concert performance as a genuine act of the performing
process.
Yevgeny Mravinsky avoided the monographic aspect in his programmes and freely alternated
compositions of different authors, periods and styles. The principle was observed for this set as
well. The featured symphonic works of Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Wagner, Bruckner,
Lyadov, Debussy, Ravel, Sibelius, Scriabin and Stravinsky were recorded by Yevgeny Mravinsky and
the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic Society both in studio and at concert
in 1949 to 1982.
