Henri Joseph De Croes

In the late 18th century, the Thurn and Taxis family of Regensburg was not only well-placed aristocracy, but also held the monopoly on the post and carriage trade in Europe. Karl Anselm, the fourth sovereign of Thurn and Taxis, was a music lover, and he made his court orchestra into one of the most known in Europe. Thanks to the influence of his famous father, Henri Jacques De Croes, from Antwerp, Henri Joseph De Croes (Brussels 1758 - Regensburg 1842) began to play violin in this orchestra when he was just seventeen years old.

The Regensburg court orchestra played a central role in the development of the clarinet in the second half of the 18th century. The orchestra could count many different talented clarinettists in its midst, as well as other musicians who also played clarinet as their second instrument. The court library's rich collection contains no less than 36 clarinet concerti from the second half of the 18th century, including works by Johann Stamitz, Johann Zach, Theodor Freiherr von Schacht, Vaclav Knežek and Henri Joseph De Croes, among others.

The parthias are stylised pieces for a rather odd ensemble of two clarinets, two violas and contrabass. This instrumentation seems to have been standard at the Regensburg court; there are also parthias by Schacht and Knežek for the same sort of ensemble. A parthia (or 'partita' or 'partia') was originally the name for a solo piece, but German composers later used the term as a synonym for a suite. The parthias by De Croes date from 1780 to 1788 and from 1794. They are light pieces, alternating between andante and menuet with a sometimes surprisingly important part for the contrabass. They are written in an original, refined style and never become banal. Henri Joseph De Croes composed his Clarinet Concerto in Bb Major in 1790, one year before Mozart wrote his own Clarinet Concerto. This work sounds light, frivolous, and relatively undramatic, as well, but the strong melodies and fine orchestration show the hand of a talented composer.

Due to family problems (the death of his two children), political causes (the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the end of the monopoly on the post, and the end of the representative function of the court orchestra) and financial problems, the Henri-Joseph De Croes' oeuvre remained small: just one clarinet concerto, a few symphonies, one ballet, an opera (called The Warlock) and a variety of divertimentos and parthias.

Schnitger - Giusti - Johan Brouwer

Schnitger - Giusti - Johan Brouwer
ID: ACDBO063-2
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Baroque

There are a number of recordings of the choral partita ‘Ach wie nichtig, ach wie flüchtig’ by Georg Böhm (1666-1733), including one on the great Arp Schnitger city organ in Hamburg (1693), 57 voices, beautifully played by Stef Tuinstra. The version heard here is played on Arp Schnitger’s smallest organ positiv, 8 voices, but it offers enough variation to register the 8 variations in a diverse manner. The suite in A Minor ‘Melpomene’ by Johann Kaspar Ferdinand Fischer (1665-1746) is taken from his Musikalischer Parnassus (1738). Melpomene was the muse of song and tragedy. The stylised dances are a slow Allemande, the fast Passepied, a Rondeau, alternately a refrain and a verse, a Chaconne, variations based on a descending series of 4 tones and finally a fast Gigue. The Fantasia on the hexachord Vt Re Mi Fa Sol La by Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-1667) was already a famous work during his lifetime., Athenasius Kirchner mentions the work in his Masurgia (1646) and it was published in an autograph in 1649. The seven parts of the work bring the hexachord in various rhythms and with various second voices. In the sixth and seventh parts he adds chromatic tones, thus deftly exploiting the meantone temperament in the strong effect of dissonants and consonants. A true masterpiece. Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-1667) wrote the Tombeau on the death of the lute player Blancheroche in Paris and added the following remark: ‘fait à Paris sur la mort de Monsieur Blancheroche: lequel se joue fort lentement à la discretion sans observer aucune mesure.’ The improvisational character of the piece strongly resembles the Preludes non mésuree by Louis Couperin, whom Froberger met in Paris in 1652. A striking feature of this work is its exploitation of the meantone temperament, e.g. Froberger twice prescribes a D flat for where a C sharp is tuned, using the dissonant here as an expressive device. The Preludium is one of the great free forms in keyboard music. Of Hans Kotter (1485-1541) we hear an early example, here called Proömium in re. Kotter was a pupil of Paulus Hofhaymer, the most important ‘Organistenmacher’ of the 16th century, just as Sweelinck was in the 17th century. The original of the Giusti instrument is now in the Tagliavini collection in Bologna/Italy.

Compiling a new CD is quite a job. On one hand musicians like to display their prowess and tackle less know repertoire however on the other hand the repertoire should also fit with the expectations of the listeners. This is also the case with this CD from Duo Stoica. On this CD Duo Stoica has striven to compile a CD that combines well known pieces with lesser known works in a program displaying a similar atmosphere.

Razvan performs these works in the way that only Razvan can, with fire, enthusiasm and full of life. The lesser known virtuoso works are also brought to life with the same virtuosity and passion. It is the diversity of these works combined with Razvan’s virtuoso reading that makes this CD unique.

The trumpet in actual practice: sooner serves the goal rather than art. That may explain why the major Romantic composers ignored the trumpet as a solo-instrument in the 19th century, although the technical possibilities of the instrument had increased enormously due to the invention of the valves. In the orchestra literature, the trumpet was always given the role of signal-horn; the versatile musical possibilities remained unutilised for a long time.

The collection of composers on this CD nevertheless wrote beautiful music, which gave the trumpet the opportunity to demonstrate itself in the role of sensory and subtle soloinstrument. The trumpet concertos of Beethoven, Mendelssohn or Strauss that were never composed are somewhat compensated with this pieces of music by less known composers.

"I wanted to feel the same excitement, the same itch, with new music as when I discovered a new piece by, say, Ravel in my teens"

After the extremely turbulent 20th century, of which the musical history may be defined as an endless series of "style wars", now, in the 21st century, composers seem to be freer than ever to choose whatever means of expression they want. But Jeppe Moulijn studied composition in an environment where there was little or no understanding for his impassioned embracing of late romanticism and the early 20th century. But Moulijn has not been standing still and now has left all naiveté behind. He is a composer of today.

This CD is a document showing this process, from the neo-romantic violin concerto
of 2005 to Et Fit Lux of 2012.

Moulijn's work can be described as expressive, rich in instrumental colours and details. It is accessible, without consciously aiming for it.

"Composers should think from the standpoint of the musician. And musicians should try to 're-create' like a composer"

Moulijn's work is first and foremost formed by his 20 years of experience as an orchestra conductor, and therefore of a musical tradition reaching from Bach to the present day.

Balbastre - Korneel Bernolet - Pieces de clavecin,(harpsichord) Premier Livre, 1759

Balbastre - Korneel Bernolet - Pieces de clavecin,(harpsichord) Premier Livre, 1759
ID: ACDBE066-2
CDs: 1
Type: SACD
Collection: Classical Period
Subcollection: Harpsichord

In a fully authentic performance, brought to life with modern flair, Belgian harpsichordist Korneel Bernolet gives an incredible recital of seventeen compositions by eighteenth century composer, Claude-Benigne Balbastre.

In a performance fittingly given by one of Europe's top harpsichord specialists, the works of Claude-Benigne Balbastre, a household name during his time, are played with full flair and colour. Available in up to Studio Master format, these rare recordings are now available in such high quality, that listening to them is barely distinguishable from witnessing their performance.

Claude-Bénigne Balbastre enjoyed a very distinguished reputation as a harpsichordist, fortepianist and organist in eighteenth-century France. Born in Dijon in 1724, in his early years he most likely took music lessons from his good friend Claude Rameau, brother of the more famous Jean-Philippe, with whom Balbastre was later to study composition.

Balbastre’s royal and aristocratic connections were to prove an embarrassment during the French Revolution. He managed to save both his own skin and the organ of Notre-Dame by playing militant atheist songs and folk music in the renamed Temple de la Raison, including his own arrangement of the Marseillaise. This was however in the end not enough to prevent him losing his position and his pension. He died in penury in 1799.

Balbastre’s Pieces de Clavecin from 1759 are influenced on the one hand by his royal and aristocratic patrons, and on the other by his contacts among the bourgeoisie, finding a stylistic balance between the two social classes. All the movements are character pieces dedicated either to members of the nobility, or to artists or other highly-placed individuals from the Parisian upper middle classes. The elevated style of French noblesse and grandeur are mirrored in the opening numbers.

Gregorian Chant and Modern Devotion in the Low Countries

This CD is part of the project "Gregorian chant and Modern Devotion in the Low Countries" of the Key2 Singing foundation in cooperation with TRIGON, vocal ensemble for medieval spiritual music led by Margot Kalse. The project is a plea for the revival of this magnificent native spiritual music from the late Middle Ages. Unfortunately, this music is seldom performed, and even more rarely so by professional ensembles such as TRIGON. This cultural-historical heritage has been preserved in several Dutch and Belgian manuscripts, and some German ones, originating from monasteries and houses of the Sisters and Brethren of the Common Life, as the Modern Devotion movement is also known. Fortunately a number of these valuable medieval manuscripts have remained well preserved, following closure of the monasteries during the reformation.
