Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Vocal and Piano New French Song has created a whole new repertoire of songs by British composers. The artists commissioned twenty exceptional British composers, some of whom were well established, others of whom were yet to receive the recognition they deserve. The composers were asked to set French literature of their choice from the past two hundred years. The result is a fascinating rainbow work covering all the major literary movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, overlapping into the twenty-first century - Romanticism, Symbolism, Surrealism, Cubism, Modernism and post-Modernism.

Collection: World Music Subcollection: Folk Music The music on this album is rooted in the music of Herat, Afghanistan, which both Veronica and John studied in the 1970s. Abdul grew up in Herat and has performed this music throughout his career, so he knows it intimately. The music captures an era of peace and normality, seen by many Afghans as a "golden age" before the recent turmoil, upheaval and war. |

Collection: Vocal Collection In 1998 leading contemporary British composer Christopher Fox began work on a new commission, a piece that was to be 'evening-long, and not a concert'. The result was the quasi-dramatic 'installation piece' Everything You Need to Know - a body of musical material which can be deployed in many different ways. Fox realised that the work needed a guide - a parallel version of the same ideas in a different form, rather like the 'catalogue raisoné' at an art exhibition. Thus was born a series of pieces for solo voice, as recorded here for the first time under the supervision of the composer and with his appearance as narrator. The sections are based on a series of multiligual texts from various sources including Virgil, Dante, tourist guides and essays. The 'catalogue' is about ideas, remembrance and the possibility of improbable connections. In itself as a sound work it is absolutely and positively unique.Performers: Christopher Fox (speaker), Julia Doyle and Juliet Fraser (sopranos), Jimmy Holliday (bass), Tom Williams (Counter-tenor), James Weeks (speaker, director)

This is the first commercial recording of her work which should establish her reputation as a composer of exceptional talent.

Subcollection: Piano The third in our series which presents Beethoven's Violin Sonatas in their musical and social context, alongside works by Beethoven's contemporaries and pupils. Here the op. 30 sonatas are joined by Franz Clement's Variations on Grétry's "Barbe Bleu" for solo violin. A magnificent performance and new recording at medium price.
Beethoven’s three sonatas for Piano and Violin Op. 30 were dedicated to Tsar Alexander 1st. He had been educated by his grandmother Catherine the Great and was considered to be a true child of the Enlightenment.
The three manuscripts of the Op. 30 sonatas are among the most expressive of the surviving original material of Beethoven’s chamber music. These works were a direct result of the collaboration with Beethoven’s violin teacher, Ignaz Schuppanzigh - who was in fact the dedicatee of the Op. 12 sonatas. The final piece on the CD was written by another significant influence on Beethoven’s work - Franz Clement. This is the third disc in a series that sets Beethoven’s sonatas in their social and musical context - in this case the context being Schuppanzigh.

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Clarinet Among the so-varied styles of music being written and constructed today, there remains a vibrant and strong lyrical tradition, focussed on the English school. Proving that such work is still fresh and relevant, here are exquisite pieces for clarinet, recorder and string quartet by Robert Crawford and the late John Veale. Modern idioms which also incorporate classical and Romantic traditions.

This disc includes chamber music by two composers, roughly contemporaries, both of whose compositional careers are marked by a substantial silence in middle age, but for very different reasons. In the case of John Veale (1922-2006), it was because he felt that the musical climate had become inimical to his style (Howard Ferguson and John Jeffreys were two other distinguished composers who gave up composing for similar reasons), whereas in the case of Robert Crawford (b1925) it was because the demands of his career as a busy BBC music producer in Glasgow took up all his time and energy.
All six works are completely accessible - and in fact are a delight. As far as can be checked, there are no other recordings of any of the works available at this time. |
