G. C. Menotti - Chamber Works - RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet

G. C. Menotti - Chamber Works - RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet
ID: CHRCD006

Type: CD

Gian Carlo Menotti passed away recently - in 2007 - and had been a force in musical life for over half a century. Born in Italy, he became a friend of Samuel Barber while studying, and it was largely this friendship which encouraged him to move to the USA. Though his home was in the USA, he always considered himself to be an Italian composer.

Menotti had great success with several operas, establishing himself as a leading opera composer of the post-war period. There is a natural, innate lyricism to his musical language; an unabashed deployment of attractive melodies, which allows him to communicate directly to a large audience who, in general, share his musical taste, loving the things he loved.

Menotti's instrumental and vocal concert music has not attracted as much attention as his stage works, but his cantatas, concertos, song-cycles and other works all share the same musical virtues and attractiveness, creating vivid and compelling musical images, and benefitting from his instinctive sense of drama.

RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet:
Winner of the 1988 London International String Quartet Competition and now in its twenty-third concert season, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet is one of Europe’s most successful quartets, internationally recognised for its beauty of sound, clarity of texture and integrity of interpretation within an unusually wide and varied range of repertoire. Appointed Resident Quartet to RTÉ in 1986 and with almost 700 performances in Ireland to date, the group has dedicated itself to bringing the wonders of the string-quartet repertoire to audiences throughout the country. At the same time they have built a thriving international career, with regular tours taking them throughout Europe and the USA.

Though Lovers be Lost -Music shadowing the two World Wars

Though Lovers be Lost -Music shadowing the two World Wars

The CD booklet contains a 2,000-word essay by Emily Pailthorpe on the music and the times in English, French and German. The photos include more of the performers, composers and the recording session.

The period between the two World Wars was one of violence, conflict, loss, nostalgia, yet great creative energy - qualities which are reflected in this collection of works for oboe and piano. These pieces conjure up a time in which loss was familiar, change seemed relentless, and yet a frenzy of exuberant artistic work was taking place. In her book 'Testament of Youth' (1933) Vera Brittain writes of the time: "Only gradually did I realize that the War had condemned me to live to the end of my days in a world without confidence and security, a world in which every dear personal relationship would be fearfully cherished under the shadow of apprehension."

The five composers represented in this disc were each directly affected by the extraordinary circumstances of the inter-war period, and their reactions were personal and diverse. Together, these pieces create not only a varied recital programme but also a window into this highly charged time. Living in the shadow of such desolation it is awe-inspiring and affirming that these men chose still to express themselves through the universal language of music. They speak clearly to us across the gulf of time in a way that is best expressed by these words of Dylan Thomas:

Though Lovers be lost, love shall not;
And death shall have no dominion.

Emily Pailthorpe (the youngest winner of the Gillet International oboe competition) joins Elaine Douvas (Principle Oboe of the Met Opera Orch.) to give an oboist’s-eye-view of opera.

Introduction by Emily Pailthorpe:

This is a CD for lovers of opera and lovers of the oboe alike. Indeed it is often the vocal quality of the oboe to which listeners and players are drawn. Whether reaching out from the pit orchestra in accompaniment, or taking centre stage for a chamber work, playing the oboe does feel like singing. Portrayed here are some of the great oboe moments in opera (Fidelio, Meistersinger) as well as many that we always wanted to stand up and sing ourselves! (For example the 'Queen of the Night' aria from Mozart's Magic Flute, the Duo from Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor.) Both the Diva and the gracious accompanist appear here - often swapping seamlessly from one role to the other.

My own love affair with opera grew when I was a student at The Juilliard School in New York, and my teacher Elaine Douvas gave me standing passes to come and hear the productions at the New York Metropolitan Opera, where she was principal oboe. It is a great pleasure to collaborate on this CD with her and her colleagues from the Met, and also to highlight the opera connection of players from the London CONCHORD Ensemble. Daniel Pailthorpe was principal flute at English National Opera for ten years and Andrea de Flammineis is principal bassoon at the Royal Opera House. I think that in this recording the operatic experience of all these players shines through.
