Komponist: BARTÓK, Béla ((1881-1945)) |
| Sein Leben: Béla Viktor János Bartók, was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. He is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century; he and Franz Liszt are regarded as Hungary's greatest composers. Through his collection and analytical study of folk music, he was one of the founders of comparative musicology, which later became ethnomusicology.
For almost three years, Bartók had composed little. He broke that silence with several piano works, one of which was the Piano Concerto, composed between August and November 1926. The work was premiered at the fifth International Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music in Frankfurt on July 1, 1927, with Bartók as the soloist and Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting. The scheduled 1927 American premiere in Carnegie Hall by the New York Philharmonic, on a tour by Bartók, was canceled by conductor Willem Mengelberg due to insufficient rehearsing. Bartók's Rhapsody had to be substituted into the program. The Concerto eventually premiered in the USA on February 13, 1928 in the same venue, with Fritz Reiner conducting the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Bartók as the soloist.
The concerto comes after an increased interest in Baroque music on the part of Bartók, which is demonstrated by such devices as the increased use of counterpoint. The work, however, retains the harshness and dissonance that is characteristic of Bartók. Here, as elsewhere in Bartók's output, the piano is used percussively. |

Kolektion: InstrumentalSubkolektion: Drums 'O Duo' are Owen Gunnell and Oliver Cox, two percussionists who bring their eclectic and charistmatic approach to the music on this CD. Well-known pieces such as Chopin!s Fantasie-Impromptu with its glorious central melody and the textual clarity of Bach!s music are juxtaposed with contemporary composers such as the Japanese composer Miki's Marimba Spiritual. There are other contrasting pieces for example Mendelssohn!s Fugue No. 4 in F minor from 1834 and Ter Veldhuis! Goldrush written in 1995.
Among the pieces on the CD are two written especially for the pair. McNeff!s Baristas of which the composer writes, “You only have to see a crack team of coffee-makers to appreciate the comparison in speed, dexterity and - most importantly - sound.” Also Joliffe!s Knock About which was inspired by people casually kicking around a football and of which the composer writes, “At its centre is one simple rhythm, but this is hidden by really fast music, which O Duo manage to pull off with their usual flair.” |

Subkolektion: Piano Swiss benefactor and conductor who commissioned works from all three composers. Then, a certain instrumental colour with a Central European tinge in Bartók and Veress, but also in Dutilleux, French composer who uses - probably as a form of tribute - one of the most emblematic of Hungarian instruments, the cimbalom.
Three great 20th century classics interpreted by Heinz Holliger, composer, conductor, oboist and pianist ; a friend of Paul Sacher’s, he was also Sándor Veress’ pupil in his composition class in Bern.Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon - who won the Géza Anda prize in Zurich - plays Veress’ Concerto with finesse and conviction, defending the composer with brio, as he did in his amazing Hommage à Paul Klee for two pianos, with András Schiff and Heinz Holliger for Teldec).
Finally, to complete the trio, one of the best Swiss chamber orchestras of today, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, whose fundamental repertoire includes the three works presented on this CD. |

Subkolektion: Quartet Fell Clarinet Quartet:
Colin Blamey, clarinet & bass clarinet
Helen Bywater, clarinet & C clarinet
Marianne Rawles, clarinet & Eb clarinet
Lenny Sayers, clarinet & bass clarinet
The Fells' journey through Eastern Europe takes in sophisticated reworkings of Bartók and earthy reimaginings of klezmer, and introduces some unfamiliar names along the way. The four clarinets lend a wonderfully suggestive reediness to these laments and dances which enhances the music's rustic tone. With the Fell Quartet as your guide, this whirlwind tour of Eastern Europe is sure to be seductive, virtuosic, and not without some moments of real grit.
