This release is a unique and rare recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams conducting his Serenade to Music from a performance in 1951. It is a deeply expressive and romantic interpretation. The Serenade to Music was commissioned by Sir Henry Wood for his Jubilee Concert to celebrate his 50 years as a conductor. The concert took place on October 5th 1938.
The Serenade to Music is one of the sweetest, most beautiful of all Vaughan William’s works.
Also on this recording are the Pilgrim’s Journey and a bonus disc of Vaughan Williams talking about the teachings of Parry and Stanford and a short extract from the funeral service of Vaughan Williams. This recording has been brilliantly re-mastered by Peter Reynolds.

Folk Songs of the Four Seasons - (world premiere recording)
In Windsor Forest - (world premiere recording of this arrangement for women's voices by Guthrie Foote)

Both the Folk Songs of the Four Seasons and this arrangement of In Windsor Forest are world premiere recordings. The Folk Songs of the Four Seasons is a substantial work by Vaughan Williams, over 40 minutes long, for women’s chorus and orchestra. It is the most significant of his works never to have been recorded in any format.
The Folk Songs of the Four Seasons was commissioned by the Women’s Institute and first performed in 1950. The work has a Prologue and four sections: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
The coupling is the rare arrangement for women’s voices, by Guthrie Foote and Vaughan Williams, of the Cantata In Windsor Forest based on choruses from the opera Sir John in Love.
This new Albion recording is issued to mark the 90th birthday of Sir David Willcocks on 30 December, 2009. Sir David is world famous for his recordings for EMI and for his work at King’s College, Cambridge and the Bach Choir. For Sir David to record another major Vaughan Williams disc at the age of almost 90 is remarkable in itself and will ensure national and international interest in this recording.

Vaughan Williams valued the opinions of close friends on his new works, even if he did not always follow the advice given. In the early years, it was to his first wife Adeline as well as to fellow composers George Butterworth and Gustav Holst that he would turn. Later, the circle of advisers widened, to include Sir Arthur Bliss, Gerald Finzi and Herbert Howells, the conductors Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Adrian Boult and Sir Malcolm Sargent and musical friends such as R.O. Morris, Steuart Wilson, Ruth Dyson and Roy Douglas. These and many others were invited to a ‘play-through’ of Vaughan Williams’ new work. Such first hearings were arranged for piano, or two pianos, and central to many of these performances in the 1940s and 1950s was Michael Mullinar (1895 - 1973). Mullinar was an expert accompanist, teacher and composer who would on occasion venture into solo repertoire.
Vaughan Williams sketches for the Sixth Symphony and Michael Mullinar’s two-piano arrangement with various interpolations by the composer can be found in the British Library. Alan Rowlands edited the two-piano arrangement for this recording making use of the final orchestral published version to fill in any gaps. Thus we can hear for the first time what a ‘play-through’ actually sounded like.

Vaughan Williams completed The Garden of Proserpine in 1899 and the work was begun in 1897 or 1898. For the twenty-something composer, it was a first attempt at a large-scale work, 489 bars long (at 24 minutes) for soprano soloist, chorus and full orchestra. Given that Vaughan Williams had only produced a handful of songs and some chamber pieces by this date, it is an impressive achievement that, in the closing pages, achieves that combination of radiance and nobility that is so characteristic of this composer in his later works. This is a premier recording.
In the Fen Country was completed in 1904 and first performed in 1909 by Thomas Beecham, the melodic outlines and the spirit of folk music is prevalent in this work.
Hadley’s Fen and Flood was inspired by the devastating events of the night of January 31 1953 when a deadly hurricane force wind created a storm tide up to 18 feet above mean sea level. Overall 2,400 people both here and in The Netherlands lost their lives. Vaughan Williams persuaded his friend Hadley to allow him to arrange the work for SATB. The new arrangement was first performed in 1956 and was dedicated to Vaughan Williams. This is a world premier recording.
The recording was recorded at The Lighthouse Poole with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Paul Daniel with soloists Jane Irwin, Mary Bevan, Leigh Melrose and the Joyful Company of Singers under Peter Broadbent.

Eight Traditional English Carols
Six English Folk Songs
TwelveTraditional Carols from Herefordshire

Vaughan Williams had begun collecting folk-songs and carols in 1903. Many Folk-songs and Carols were collected in the early 1900s by Vaughan Williams and Ella Mary Leather who visited local gypsies in Herefordshire where together they rescued traditional songs that may well have disappeared forever.

These songs and carols remind us of our childhood and the power and beauty of songs sung by those generations long before our own.

Australian baritone Derek Welton is a very much sought-after concert artist who has performed at the Barbican, Cadogan Hall, Royal Albert Hall, The Sage Gateshead, Bridgewater Hall, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Wigmore. Iain Burnside once again accompanies for Albion Records, who enjoys a unique reputation as pianist and broadcaster.

CANTABILE - The London Quartet - release their new album on Champs Hill Records - Here with Special Digital Bonus Track - Flash Bang Wallop!

Well known as wonderful entertainers, the four singers of Cantabile here share some more serious and hauntingly beautiful songs.

Released in 2014, the 100th anniversary of the start of "The Great War", this is a programme sung from the heart, inspired by the dual themes of love and of war.

The disc seeks to capture the heartfelt emotion of the time: young men sent off to the front, and those they left behind.

Featuring works from 17 composers, both a cappella songs and a number accompanied by the renowned pianist Malcolm Martineau.

Amongst the 18 songs on this disc are Elgar's As Torrents In Summer, Poulenc's Bleuet, Vaughan Williams' Silent Noon, Bridge's The Last Invocation, and many other achingly beautiful songs, with music by Haydn, Barley, Pearsall, Chopin and Quilter and others.

This ‘songbook’ is unique to the Schola Cantorum choristers of Tewkesbury Abbey. “Essentially, it's a showcase for the Abbey trebles,” their Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas explains. “We’ve been assembling our own Songbook for quite a while now - the songs the trebles sing, from time to time, in boys-only concerts, and that they are taught in individual singing lessons. I’ve always been keen to build each boy up as a soloist, not necessarily with the express idea of them singing lots of solos, but so that they can learn to sing in a soloistic way.”

This is evident most of all in the distinctive singing of 11- year-old Laurence Kilsby, whose gifts won him the BBC Chorister of the Year competition in 2009. On this recording, he features as soloist in two Shelley settings by Roger Quilter, the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria and in John Ireland’s beautiful, sincerely-felt Passiontide motet Ex Ore Innocentium from 1944.
