Heinrich Schütz - Sacred Choral Music - Die Vögel unter dem Himmel

Heinrich Schütz - Sacred Choral Music - Die Vögel unter dem Himmel
ID: DCD34043

Type: CD
Collection: Baroque

The massed voices of the 140-strong National Youth Choir revel in the magnificently soaring lines of Schütz’s sacred music, complemented by John Kitchen’s contributions on the powerful Rieger organ of St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh. Revered by his contemporaries as the ‘Orpheus of our time’, Schütz would never have heard his music performed by forces such as these and on such a scale - surely he would have been a strong advocate of this astounding aural experience. Kitchen’s solo contributions contextualise the choral music with organ works by Samuel Scheidt and other contemporaries of Schütz.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck is one of the principal composers in the 16th- and 17th-century Holland. As far as we know, Sweelinck only left Holland on one time. Nevertheless his works show Italien/Venetian influences, English/virginalist elements and knowledge of spanish composers. The growing cultural importance of Amsterdam in Sweelinck´s day probalbly explain his knowledge of contemporary European music. At the beginning of the 17th century, many organists travelled not only from Germany but also Poland and Sweden to Amsterdam to study under the famous Sweelinck. Later his Hamburg pupils Heinrich Scheidemann and Jacob Praetorius founded a sort of ‘Sweelinck outpost’ in Hamburg. They passed on their pupils what they have learned in Amsterdam. Léon Berben plays the pieces of Sweelincks und his pupils brilliantly at St. Jaque’s Church in Liège. This organ was reconstructed in the style of the late 16th century, following Sweelinck´s large organ in Amsterdam. RK 2205 | edition raumklang | Total: 67:32

Sacred Bridges - Christian, Jewish and Muslim Psalms, The King's Singers with Sarband

Sacred Bridges - Christian, Jewish and Muslim Psalms, The King's Singers with Sarband
ID: SIGCD065
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

Signum Classics are proud to release the King's Singers fifth disc on Signum; Sacred Bridges.
For thousands of years, the biblical Psalter has been the liturgical “heart” of the three main book religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Psalms announce the word of God and, simultaneously, contain the full range of human experience.

Jews, Christians and Muslims sing and listen to the same songs of lament and joy, confessions of sin, hymns of praise and adoration. In this project of the King’s Singers and Sarband, psalm settings by composers from three religions give an example of how psalms can be a source of spirituality, a political instrument, a link between tradition and modernity and, above all, a bridge connecting human beings.

Programme Idea and development - Dr. Vladimir Ivanoff

Sarband performs this program with different choirs and vocal ensembles, until now: King's Singers, RIAS Chamber Choir, Innovantiqua Ensemble, Chorakademie Dortmund.

The group’s name Sarband stems from the Persian and Arabic languages, and means an improvised connection of two parts within a musical suite. Vladimir Ivanoff founded the ensemble in 1986 and has been pursuing an archaeology of complex connections ever since: Above all, ‘Sarband’ endeavours to explore and demonstrate connections between the music-cultures of Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Both sensitively and intensely Sarband celebrates the symbiotic relationship between Orient and Occident.

The continuous musical collaboration within the Ensemble ensures that a dialogue on equal terms is maintained. It is the exchange of practical musical experience between musicians from different cultures that make the performances of Sarband gripping, lively and utmost authentic.

Sarband’s unique repertoire has won them wide acclaim internationally. In the past two decades, the ensemble has performed at numerous international festivals and recorded 15 CDs.

Sarband’s musicians do not see their work as something sporadic but as a part of being and living. Just as religious, economic, cultural and political differences between Orient and Occident play a predominant role in today’s society, Sarband’s music endeavours to show that music has always served as communication in which people found reciprocal respect for each other and could easily contribute in the process of relating in the same way today. Uniting people around the world, offering mutual recognition towards each other, in other words: music as an example for peace.

Live in Grand Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, April 22, 2013
This recorded concert was the final event of an international musicological conference with concerts and workshops entitled “The Unknown Renaissance: Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s 450th Anniversary». The Russian audience had the opportunity to listen to the vocal music of the “last great Dutch composer": Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621), as well as the music of his contemporaries. The compact disc opens with Sweelinck’s Christmas motet “Hodie Christus natus est”, SwWV 163 from the collection “Cantiones sacrae” published in 1619. It is followed by the motet “Ascendit Deus” by Peter Philips (c.1560/61-1628), an English composer who spent the most fruitful part of his life in the Spanish Netherlands. In 1593 Philips made a special trip to Amsterdam in order to meet Sweelinck, who previously, in 1580, had written a cycle of variations on Philips’s Pavane. Philips’s motet “Ave verum corpus” is followed by a composition set to the same text by one of his teachers, William Byrd (c. 1540/1543-1623).
