The King's Singers - 1605 Treason and Dischord - Music for the Gunpowder plot

The King's Singers - 1605 Treason and Dischord - Music for the Gunpowder plot
ID: SIGCD061
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Choir

Signum Classics are proud to release the fourth disc from The King's Singers on Signum Classics - 1605: Treason and Dischord. On 5 November 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught preparing to detonate 36 barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords unveiling an act of attempted treason that shocked the whole of Europe. What led a group of young Catholic men to risk their lives for their faith? 400 years later the King’s Singers and Concordia illuminate the dangers of hearing Mass in secret, of conspiracy and downfall, and of protestant relief and celebration, through a project of music and prose. The music, structured around Byrd’s perfect 4-part Mass, contains motets by Catholic composers, balanced with protestant anthems celebrating the downfall of the plot, and a commission from the British composer, Francis Pott. Master Tresham: His Ducke reflects on the ‘9/11’ of its day - 5/11/1605. The script, drawing on historic texts and written by Deborah Mackay for the quatercentenary concert series related to this CD, uses the dramatized persona of William Byrd, the most famous composer of his age, to recreate the atmosphere of change and hope in the Jacobean court.

5 much loved King’s Singers albums - boxed set of 5 CDs
Exclusively on Signum Records

To celebrate The King’s Singers 40th anniversary year, the group are releasing five of their bestselling Signum released albums from the last 6 years in a fantastic new CD boxed-set collection.

The King’s Singers Collection includes Tallis’s masterpiece, Spem in alium, alongside magical works of our day (Landscape & Time), the overwhelming beauty of William Byrd (Treason & Dischord) and Gesualdo and with some ‘icing on the cake’ - King’s Singers lollipops on Six.

After 40 years The King's Singers show no sign of slowing down. The five albums in this set were made in the space of three years and display the diversity and flexibility of the world's premiere a cappella ensemble.

Gesualdo: Powerful and harmonically daring music, the dark texts for Holy Week resonated with the Italian prince Carlo Gesualdo's own life, which was mired in murder, guilt and obsession. His music sounds as fresh as the day he composed it.
Six: Classic jazz and pop arrangements plus a commission from Joby Talbot, displaying the group's famous blended sound, perfect intonation and customary style.
1605: Follow the story of how a group of young religious zealots tried to change the faith of a nation by force. With music from Catholics and Protestants, this fascinating programme ends with a commission from Francis Pott which finds grim resonances with today's religious intolerances.
Spem: Historians may not know exactly why Tallis wrote Spem in alium, but nobody disagrees that this majestic 40-part motet is one of the glories of renaissance art.
Landscape & Time: We are all shaped by the surroundings and age in which we live. Listen to music, including five commissions, which give us different perspectives from England, Scotland, America, Japan, Hungary, Finland and Estonia.

Live in Grand Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, April 22, 2013
This recorded concert was the final event of an international musicological conference with concerts and workshops entitled “The Unknown Renaissance: Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s 450th Anniversary». The Russian audience had the opportunity to listen to the vocal music of the “last great Dutch composer": Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621), as well as the music of his contemporaries. The compact disc opens with Sweelinck’s Christmas motet “Hodie Christus natus est”, SwWV 163 from the collection “Cantiones sacrae” published in 1619. It is followed by the motet “Ascendit Deus” by Peter Philips (c.1560/61-1628), an English composer who spent the most fruitful part of his life in the Spanish Netherlands. In 1593 Philips made a special trip to Amsterdam in order to meet Sweelinck, who previously, in 1580, had written a cycle of variations on Philips’s Pavane. Philips’s motet “Ave verum corpus” is followed by a composition set to the same text by one of his teachers, William Byrd (c. 1540/1543-1623).
