Colin Lawson (clarinet) & Sebastian Comberti (cello)
Volume 2 of the Lefèvre Sonatas completes the set of 12 from his Méthode de Clarinette (1802). Reviews of Vol. 1 praised the clarity of texture of the historical instrumentation and the consequent benefit to Lefèvre’s inventive pieces.
Repertoire on the new disc again reflects the progressive nature of the set, ranging from the concise Sonata no. 2 to the complex final Sonata no. 12, with its characterful set of variations.
These performances offer a vivid contrast to the unwieldy medium of modern B flat clarinet and piano, on which a few of the sonatas have been played from modern editions. Many of the pieces are, however, virtually unknown.
Following on from Lawson’s other highly successful CDs for Clarinet Classics, this CD will inspire players and listeners alike.
First performances using original instrumentation (C clarinet and cello).
Core repertoire (included on Associated Board and many other exam syllabi).
Important set of early Clarinet Sonatas from a celebrated pedagogue. |

Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Voices and Chamber Ensemble ...finally exploding in a sea of profundity from which the first words rise. Just like Baudelaire, Luca Francesconi appears to be crying out in the apparent stasis in the middle of the work: “The beautiful life! The beautiful life!” Then everything is reversed in a mirror process, with the energy being reborn of its own antimatter, or perhaps of its memory.

Subcollection: Opera A new chapter in the Ricordi Oggi series, the collection that enacts the strong partnership between Stradivarius and the prestigious Casa Ricordi publishing house.
This world première recording is dedicated to Luca Francesconi and his Ballata, a two-act opera whose libretto, by Umberto Fiori, is based upon S. T. Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Francesconi confirms his particular confidence for large-scale musical thought, rather than merely show a flair for illustrative brilliance.
"Coleridge’s Mariner confronts a natural world that is implacably adverse, one that [...] remains magnificently indifferent to its needs. To respond to that requires a sense of pacing, of large-scale dynamic proportion, that must prevail over any proclivity to exuberant detail.[...] That sense of scale [...] is everywhere in Francesconi’s recent work. [...] Fiori’s fine libretto is so constructed as to allow for the enchained series of numbers that are integral to that form of dramaturgy, because they pace the opera’s progress through a sequence of images and actions whose synopsis could be presented in a few, trite sentences, but whose power and resonance can only be felt when worked through at the slow, remorseless pace common to Francesconi’s opera, and Coleridge’s poem” David Osmond-Smith, liner notes.
