Recorded in Auditorio de Las Rozas, Madrid, 23 and 24 April 2001

Vesko Eschkenazy (violin) and Ludmil Angelov (piano) began performing as duo in 1995. Both were born in Bulgaria, in the families of musicians, and both have graduated from the Bulgarian State Academy of Music in Sofia. Ludmil Angelov has studied with the pianist Konstantin Stankovich, former assistant of the legendary Nadia Boulanger, while Vesko Eschkenazy furthered his studies in the class of Prof. Yfrah Neaman. Both are winners of prestigious international competitions and have performed as soloists of European famous orchestras. They have given concerts in many countries in Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Currently Mr. Eschkenazy is concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Holland), and Mr. Angelov is Artistic Director of Toledo International Music Festival. Ludmil Angelov's integral recording of Chopin's rondos and variations for a CD released by Gega New was awarded in 2000 the Grand Prix du Disque Chopin by the International Chopin Institute of Warsaw. The present program features Russian music of the 20th c. and more specifically composers whose works are an example of performer's art. Sergei Prokofiev's Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 2 in D major op. 94 bis is a transcription of a flute sonata dating from a year earlier. The violin version was revised by the composer together with David Oistrakh and was first performed in 1944. Sonata for Violin and Piano in G major op. 134 (1968) by Dmitri Shostakovich is also associated with David Oistrakh. The composer wrote it for the famous Russian violinist's 60th anniversary. Rodion Shchedrin's Humoresque and In Imitation of Albeniz are parts of four pieces for piano, where motifs from his ballet The Little Hump-Backed Horse (Konyok-gorbunok) are used. The transcription for violin and piano is by the famous Russian violinist and music pedagogue Dmitry Tziganov.

Svetozar Ivanov has a successful international career as a pianist. He has made numerous appearances as recitalist and orchestra soloist in Europe and North America. Recent venues include Festival “Peter the Great” in the Netherlands, Robert Helps International Festival at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Fox River Chamber Music Festival in Wisconsin, Chautauqua Music Festival in New York, Sequoia Concerts in San Francisco, The Steinway Series and the Encore Series in Florida and numerous concert series at universities throughout the USA. He is a piano professor at University of South Florida and serves on the Artist Faculty at Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont and as Artistic Director of the Steinway Piano Series in Florida. Svetozar Ivanov was born in Bulgaria and is a graduate of the Pancho Vladigerov Bulgarian National Conservatory. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Michigan. The first CD of the pianist released by Gega New includes works by Debussy, Berg, Schoenberg and Scriabin (GD 322). The second CD features pieces which present the development of music art within a period of four centuries. Svetozar Ivanov says about the present program: “In 1914 Erik Satie composed Perpetual Tango which was meant to be repeated eternally. Seventy years later John Cage wrote a piece with the same title, shape and structure as Satie's tango. Separately and superimposed, these two works encircle this CD endlessly. The title, Naked Tango is borrowed from a stunning work (reproduced on the cover) by Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca. I was very fortunate to know Robert Helps during the last few years of his life and he remains a great inspiration for me as a person and as a musician. His music, which is the heart of this CD, along with timeless sounds from the distant past (Tisdall, Rameau) is woven into the perpetual rhythm of the tango as expressed by Nazareth, Stravinsky, Shchedrin and Barber.”

The ballet score uses music from instrumental works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky composed in the years when Leo Tolstoy conceived and created his novel Anna Karenina.

The title sheet of the score has a dedication “To Maya Plisetskaya, always”. The great ballet dancer and the composer’s spouse to whom Shchedrin’s other ballets were dedicated as well (Carmen Suite, The Seagull, The Lady with the Lapdog) was an initiator of creation of this work. Moreover, apart from dancing the main part, she also choreographed the ballet. The premiere took place at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1971. Valeri Levental designed the stage setting and Pierre Cardin created the costumes. Yuri Temirkanov, the chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre was at the stand. This recording was made with him conducting.

Firma Melodiya presents an anniversary set dedicated to Vladimir Spivakov’s 70th birthday.
This outstanding musician is well-known and loved across the world. A violinist, educator, conductor, founder and permanent leader of the chamber orchestra Moscow Virtuosi and the National Symphony Orchestra of Russia, an organizer of the charity trust that supports talented children, a director of international music festivals both in Russia and overseas, a jury member of a number of violin competitions, and the president of the Moscow International House of Music. Maestro Spivakov’s artistic and social activities only broaden through the years - he performs all over the world, renews his violin and conducting repertoire playing with some of the best soloists and conductors.
The 5-CD set features Vladimir Spivakov as both a violinist and conductor on recordings made in 1970s to 1990s. That period of performing activity and creation of the Moscow Virtuosi was a bright phase in the maestro’s career leaving an unforgettable trace in performing arts of this country and the world. The chamber pieces by Schubert, Locatelli, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud, Bartók and Prokofiev, and virtuosic numbers by Paganini, Wieniawski and Saint-Saëns were recorded with remarkable pianists such as Viktoria Postnikova and Boris Bekhterev; one of the CDs is dedicated to Mozart (Symphony No. 28 and the Coronation Mass) while another is dedicated to Rodion Shchedrin (Carmen Suite and also Music for the Town of Köthen written especially for Spivakov).
Spivakov’s earlier unreleased concert recordings at the 4th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970 are of particular interest. The violinist was awarded the second prize and a silver medal at the competition for his performance of Sibelius’s and Tchaikovsky’s violin concertos, and Tchaikovsky’s, Sarasate’s and Shchedrin’s pieces.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of 20th century cello music performed by Oleg Vedernikov and Alexey Goribol.
The name of Alexey Goribol, a pianist, public figure, Honoured Artist of Russia and organizer of numerous festivals and music projects is well known to the domestic and foreign listeners, while the name of Oleg Vedernikov whose life ended up so tragically in 2015 is less known to a wide audience. This album is dedicated to the memory of the remarkable cellist.
A graduate of the Ural Conservatory in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), Oleg Vedernikov won a silver medal of the 2nd All-Union cello Competition in Yaroslavl in 1988. Then he took a graduate course at the Moscow Conservatory with Natalia Shakhovskaya and was one of her favourite students. Together with Alexey Goribol Vedernikov won the first prize at the chamber competition in Trapani, Italy.
This recording was made in 1993 when Oleg Vedernikov’s performance, in his peers’ opinion, was on top of cello art. The cellist and the pianist make a brilliant ensemble unveiling the entire contradiction and figurative wealth of contemporary music. It was the first joint work to both of the musicians, and it was followed by many years of fruitful artistic partnership.
The album features cello sonatas by Dmitri Shostakovich and Alfred Schnittke, and works by Leonid Desyatnikov and Rodion Shchedrin.
