Regis presents two LP recordings on one CD - Handel Arias and Folksongs of the British Isles - the only recital disc of Richard Lewis available in today’s market.

Kolekce: Orchestral WorksPodkolekce: Orchestr The ‘Great C major’ has often been cited as the first of the big romantic symphonies and an open door leading to the Romantic era. We owe the belated emergence of this symphony, 11 years after Schubert’s death, to Schumann who described it as “a symphony for the benefit and enjoyment of the whole world.”
The Philharmonia Orchestra are widely recognised as the UK’s finest performers with an impressive recording legacy. The orchestra prides itself on collaborations with the finest musicians of our day including guest conductor Sir Charles MacKerras. |

Kolekce: Orchestral WorksPodkolekce: Orchestr Recorded at the Royal Festival Hall in February 2006, the next disc in Signum’s series of live orchestral recordings with the Philharmonia features the late Sir Charles Mackerras conducting Mahler’s Symphony No.4. The concert was a memorable one, as this review of that concert demonstrates:
“This performance was inspired and interesting … Setting off at a no-nonsense, fastish speed, Mackerras’s appreciation of the numerous changes of tempos was a miracle of refined music-making that enhanced the rustic joys of the first movement. What impressed so much was the innate humanity of this music that in other hands can come across as insincere. Numerous details were bought out in the music, not least gurgling bassoons, clarinets suggestive of birds, and flutes that effortlessly floated above the general melee. Each movement received wonderful care for the sentiment that lies behind the notes; the slow movement in particular was of a poise and serenity that was truly touching. The singing of Sarah Fox in the finale embellished the entire sense of naturalness that was enshrined in this memorable rendition, a triumph for the partnership of the Philharmonia Orchestra, on riveting form, and the venerable Mackerras.” ClassicalSource.com |

Podkolekce: Voices and Orchestra Beethoven’s euphoric Symphony No.9, like his symphony No.5, is one of those pieces of classical music which transcends the barrier between musical genres - one of the few pieces of the classical canon in the popular consciousness. Few can fail to be uplifted and caught up in the joyous Ode to Joy finale. For this performance, recorded live at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1994, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment were joined by the renowned conductor and long-time collaborator, Sir Charles Mackerras, a partnership between him and the OAE that lasted almost a quarter of a century.
This is Signum’s second release with the OAE, following a release of Monteverdi’s Vespers (SIGCD237) earlier this year. The next release, planned for December, will feature Sarah Connolly performing Mahler’s Totenfier and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with the OAE under Vladimir Jurowski. |
