Musiktheater in 13 Bildern nach Leonora Carrington
Librettofassung von Elfriede Jelinek in der Übersetzung
von Heribert Becker (1997-99)

It is a sadistic family story in scurrile-surreal snap shots. The home of an odd family stands in a completely remote, heathlike landscape. This somewhat dilapidated bourgeois house in its seclusion is refuge and madhouse at the same time; here, in the bizarre impressions of family life, the focus turns on people and nature: an outer world, drowning in violence, coldness and terror, and the small, inner world of a bourgeois family, regulated right to the last corner, but abruptly toppled into chaos, when couples and generations come to be at logger-heads about their unappeased longings and desires.

Si bleu, si calme: The natural cycles of water and air are the underlying ideas of "Si bleu, si calme": condensation and evaporation, winds and currents. "Bleu" (blue) stands for the elements air and water, and "Calme" (calm) refers to space and silence. In musical terms, the complex "Bleu" tends toward development and growing complexity, while "Calme" works on the simplification of intervals and rhythmical figures.

Das Theater der Wiederholungen [The Theatre of Repetitions], Bernhard Lang‘s magnum opus, is divided into three large sections, three narratives set in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries respectively. The theatre of repetitions is a reference to Gilles Deleuze and the specific compositional principle developed by Bernhard Lang, already hinting at the work‘s programmatic content („a possible story of cruelty“). Olga Neuwirth: Lost Highway

Lost Highway is a composition that decidedly lives from the transformation of physical spaces, diverse inner and outer spaces, into sound spaces. In performance, this is achieved through various, three-dimensional sound projections, which surround the audience with playing, live-electronics, and virtual acoustics, resulting in different experiential relationships from within and without, close by, and from a distance. The illustrations of these sound spaces and notes naturally are only an attempt to approach the experience in the theater. Fortunately, the possibilities of surround-techniques have come to our aid, which envelop the listener with alternating, overlaying sound-strata. Thus, the present production was intended to be mixed for 5.1 surround. (Olga Neuwirth)

What I want...
is always the same: a music which in order to be grasped, does not require a privileged intellectual training, but can rely uniquely upon its compositional clarity and logic; a music which is at the same time the expression and the aesthetic form of a curiosity able to reflect everything - including the illusion of progressiveness. Art as a foretaste of freedom in an age without freedom.

...it's hot, eight o'clock in the evening, i'm tired and thirsty. i've worked enough for today. i take a look at the television programme and the dj line-up for the night scene and decide to let the evening end in a bar. ispruce myself up, leave my apartment and head for the bar area. already from far away i hear the low bass of techno music. my steps quicken, i reach the bar and open the door. thick waves of smoke hit me in the face. it is dim,the glaring lights flicker to the rhythm of the music. i get myself a beer and let myself be dazed by the strong beat of the music and pulled on to the dance floor. a few hours and drinks later i leave the place elated. from far away i still hear the pulse of the music continuing and...

Stadler Quartett:
Frank Stadler, violin / Izso Bajusz, violin / Predrag Katanic, viola / Peter Sigl, cello

The stadler quartet was founded in Salzburg in 1992 by the Mozarteum Orchestra´s current concert master, Frank Stadler. The quartet´s members (Frank Stadler, Izso Bajusz, Predrag Katanic, and Peter Sigl) are also members of the renowned Österreichisches Ensemble für Neue Musik (oenm, or Austrian Ensemble for Contemporary Music).

Together, they form the core of the versatile ensemble, which performs a wide range of music but is particularly committed to contemporary music. The stadler quartet has likewise made it their goal to devote themselves to the preparation and study of contemporary works, including the most recent compositions. Since its founding they premiered around 150 works, many dedicated to them.

The repertoire also includes the key works and the standard repertoire of the 20th-century. However, the basis of their music-making remains the great works of the classical and romantic string-quartet tradition. This diversity has earned the quartet an excellent reputation on the concert stage, well beyond specialist circles.

The quartet greatly values their on-going collaboration with contemporary composers, including George Crumb, Helmut Lachenmann, György Kurtág, Johannes Kalitzke, Peter Ruzicka, Jörg Widmann and Chaya Czernowin. The quartet´s appearance in the Salzburger Festival and their numerous concerts and concert series in Salzburg ("ASPEKTE" festival, among others) serve to demonstrate yet again the quality of the quartet and their esteem in the eyes of the public and music circles.

One of the highpoints in the stadler quartet's career was their spectacular execution of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet in the Salzburg Festival.

The Four have toured Holland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovenia, Norway, Italy, Japan, Korea and Brasil.

The stadler quartet received the prize for "Neues Hören" or "New Listening" from the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum .

In 2005, the stadler quartet interpretated (in image and sound) Steve Reich´s work "Different Trains" for a documentary film about Betty Freeman.

The “Four Islands of the Dead” are musical “over-paintings” of “Four Serious Songs” by Johannes Brahms; a work of his later years, songs of consolation for the growing certainty, increasingly personal, of his insight into the transient nature of earthly existence. These songs are like places on a shore made safe by biblical texts, from which one glimpses a dark space, the space of the here-and-now. The idea of a hereafter in the course of modern history, with its progressive centuries-long tendency to secularisation, has become more and more diffuse, so that the phenomenon of death at present is often now entirely repressed; a facade of outwardly life-affirming diversions displaces the view to that area outside one‘s personal experience of time. Böcklin‘s “Islands of the Dead” is a suitable comparison here: what lies hidden beyond the shores of the island, behind silence and darkness, is no longer a question of faith, but has come much more a matter of imagination, of fantasy. The essential subject-matter is invisible.

RAMON LAZKANO - Hauskor

Hauskor
In Basque the word Hauskor refers to that which potentially has the quality of breaking itself up into dust thanks to the inner dynamism of the material after which it is named. Thus comes the initial idea of the piece: eight cellists who, because of their new position in space, dim and blur the orchestral convention, trickling what seemed to be a homogeneous group into separate voices which end up confronting the wholeness from which they spring. It is the threshold of a conflict, and over this threshold leans and balances itself what could be alluded to as the production of sounds.

Ortzi Isilak
Ramon Lazkano took two quotations from Nietzsche as the thought and the expression of the sound environment from which the musical idea slowly emerges. These two references may be read philosophically and artistically but can also plainly allude to a certain figurative affinity with the contents of the work.

Ilunkor
The five linked up sections of Ilunkor seek after the mineral and earthly ideas which were at the onset of their being designed. Carving sounds, creating volumes and crests out of silence, saturating harmony and carrying dynamics and ranges to extremes, conceiving shape as a maze of breakings and windows and time as an expanded dimension…
