Reflections - Clarinet Concertos by G. Fitkin, C. Davis, G. Finzi - D.Campbell, clarinet

Reflections - Clarinet Concertos by G. Fitkin, C. Davis, G. Finzi - D.Campbell, clarinet
ID: CC0057
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Clarinet

An exciting new release featuring one of the best loved British concertos in the repertoire, and two premiere recordings. As well as the Finzi, David Campbell brings his authoritative playing to two works for clarinet and orchestra, which were specially written for him. The Fitkin is an approachable work which highlights both the lyrical and more challenging ideas associated with this eminent composer and Carl Davis, who as one of our most successful composers of film music, brings his skills as a more serious composer to a highly attractive new work.

David Campbell enjoys an international career as clarinet soloist and teacher. His solo engagements have taken him to over forty countries and he has performed a wide-ranging repertoire with many orchestras including: the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, English Chamber, London Mozart Players, BBC Concert, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish, BBC Philharmonic, Orchestra of St. John's, Smith Square and many abroad.

New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, Arthur [i.e. Alexander] Smallens, conductor (4th). Event:Recorded Aug. and Dec. 1939, New York (1st, 3rd works), Oct. 27, 1932, Berlin (2nd), and Aug. 16, 1939, Lewisohn Stadium, New York (Saint-Saëns and Bach Suite). Section of Saint-Saëns performed by Steven Isserlis recorded in 2004. Film recorded 1939, Hollywood, Calif.

As many Feuermann enthusiasts will know, this dazzling live performance from 1939 has remained unheard by the public due largely to the fact that the original suffers from a 20 second break in the recorded sound during the last movement. Now with the expertise of Steven Isserlis (who plays the 'de Munck' Stradivarius used by Feurmann) and some engineering wizardry, Cello Classics has been able to 'fill' the gap so that the performance can be enjoyed uninterrupted. This was achieved by a very small (5 seconds) insert of new recorded material and the re-use of an existing section to cover the rest of the missing music. Of course it is an outrageous thing to do, to tamper with an original performance of such stature! How can one justify this? Well, it is possible, by omitting the inserted material, to listen to the original performance in its unedited state, if the listener so wishes. A great deal of care was taken to ensure that the spirit of the original is preserved as much as possible. Of course any keen eared listener will detect the work done, but the object was to allow a complete hearing of the work and it is felt that this has been achieved.

The other major attraction on this new Enhanced CD is the very rare film that was made also in 1939. As the only footage of its kind we can at last watch the great cellist perform two of his popular show pieces, Dvorak's Rondo and Popper's Spinning Song, and marvel at the spectacular bowing technique and Feuermann's phenomenal command of the instrument. The film can be viewed by placing the CD into a PC or Mac computer.

The rest of the CD is given to other short rarities - previously unheard takes of works by Bach and Fauré plus the Popper Papillon that was never released in Feuermann's lifetime.

J. Raff: Suite for Piano and Orchestra, Op.200, Overtures and Preludes
ID: CDS1085-2
CDs: 1
Type: CD

By the time Joachim Raff began composing works for solo instruments and orchestra, he had been in Franz Liszt’s inner circle for several years as a full participants in the Weimar avant-garde. Having been intimately involved in the creation and orchestration of the earliest versions of at least two of Liszt’s three formally-named piano concerti, it is not surprising therefore, that Raff’s own first concerto followed, in a general sort of way, Liszt’s model of interconnected, thematically related movements.

London Mozart Players, Harry Blech - Complete Hmv Stereo Recordings

London Mozart Players, Harry Blech - Complete Hmv Stereo Recordings
ID: FHR05
CDs: 3
Type: CD
Collection: Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestra

Following First Hand Records award winning set of Cherkassky HMV recordings, they now publish the complete HMV stereo recordings made by the London Mozart Players and Harry Blech. They are issued here for the first time on CD, most for the first time in stereo. This welcomed tribute is released in 2009 to celebrate both the 60th anniversary year of LMP and the centenary of Blech's birth. Selling at a great 3 for 2 CD price, this set comes in an attractive 4-panelled digipack.

Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, in 1956 & 1957, and sympathetically remastered there using the original HMV master tapes, these recordings sound magnificent for their 54 year age.

LMP are the longest established chamber orchestra in the UK and have always been greatly respected worldwide. These HMV recordings were made in the Golden Age of LMP and illustrate why the legendary LMP/Blech 35 year partnership was so successful. Once again, we are able to hear that unique ensemble sound the LMP were famous for in these, their earliest stereo recordings.

Highlights from this issue include Mozart's great 'Posthorn' Serenade and a magnificent reading of the 'Jupiter' Symphony both displaying LMP and Blech at their best.

The 1950s were the Golden Age of the London Mozart Players. Harry Blech had an incredible musical instinct which, coupled with his unfailingly musical and heartfelt performances drew faithful capacity audiences to the ten regular Royal Festival Hall concerts each season - a difficult act to follow these days! These HMV recordings were made in 1956 and 1957 at Abbey Road Studios, London and were remastered there in 2009 using the original EMI stereo source tapes which had lain undisturbed for over 50 years!
