1. THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN
Carl Davis’s score for The French Lieutenant’s Woman won both BAFTA and Novello Awards in 1981. The film made international stars of Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons, supported by the soaring romanticism of the music. This new suite runs the full gamut of emotions : despair to its ecstatic conclusion.
2. HOTEL DU LAC
Anita Brookner’s 1983 Booker Prize winning award was the inspiration for this 1986 BBC dramatization starring Anna Massey and Denholm Elliott. This new ‘Nocturne’ takes the raw materials of Carl Davis’s original score and shapes them into a touching and moody distillation of the original novel. Features Amy Dickson (alto saxophone).
3. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Voted No. 1 in the Radio Time’s ‘People’s Favourite Competition’, this 1995 series changed the face of dramatizations of classic novels. Carl Davis’s witty and expressive score matched the brilliance of Jane Austen’s scintillating text. His new suite in three movements introduces the family, their critics, and the fabulous love story of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy. Melvyn Tan who played the forte piano on the original soundtrack repeats his stunning performance on a full scale Steinway.
4. CRANFORD
This delightful series, filmed in 2007 and 2009 starring Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins, is the source for this new suite of selections from Carl Davis’s panoramic score based on Mrs Gaskell’s charming novel. Released in 1996, the CD links together two 20th-century composers - Igor Stravinsky and Emil Tabakov. Its originality is not only in the combination of Firebird and Concerto for Orchestra but also in Tabakov's interpretation as principal conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. And if in the Firebird ballet suite, a classical work of the 20th century, both the orchestra and the conductor have unanimously achieved the sound brilliance of the score, with all its variety of colours and sound effects, in Concerto for Orchestra the author Tabakov continues not only his own development but also the elaboration of the traditions of the Bulgarian school of composing in the symphonic genre. In its three movements expanded in time, the composition reveals a modern Bulgarian world of feelings and expressiveness in which the rhythm and the Bulgarian merry and sad songs are present. The performance is of a high class, impressing with depth and multitude of orchestra colours. |
