The fourth in our acclaimed series which presents Beethoven's Violin Sonatas in their musical and social context, alongside works by Beethoven's contemporaries and pupils. Here we present the op. 23 adn 24 Sonatas together with the very fine and little known C minor Sonata, op. 38. by Ferdinand Ries.

This is the fourth disc in a series that sets Beethoven’s sonatas in their social and musical context. The Opus 23 & 24 (Frühlingssonate) Sonatas were commissioned by Baron Moritz de Fries and were first performed in Vienna 1800. The connection with Ferdinand Ries was that his father had been a teacher of violin technique to Beethoven, and Beethoven reciprocated with piano lessons for Ferdinand, when he settled in Vienna in 1801.

L. van Beethoven:
Violin Sonata No. 4 in A minor, Op. 23
Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24 'Spring'

G. Rochberg - Caprice Variations - Violin Sonata - P. Sheppard Skærved, violin - Aaron Shorr, piano

G. Rochberg - Caprice Variations - Violin Sonata - P. Sheppard Skærved, violin - Aaron Shorr, piano
ID: MSV28521
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Violin

An immense and magnificent set of variations by American composer George Rochberg, not just, as the title may suggest, on Paganini's famous 24th Caprice, but incorporating styles and forms "borrowed" from many other ocmposers, such as Mahler, Brahms, Busoni, Schubert and Beethoven! The work is played on the renowned "Habeneck" Stradivarius violin of 1734. Violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved is a virtuoso of the first order and a regular Metier recording artist. Aaron Shorr joins in for the world premiere recording of Rochberg's Violin Sonata in a stunning live performance.

Presented here is Skærved’s highly regarded recording of the Caprice Variations for solo violin (previously released as MSVCD92065), with the première recording of Rochberg’s 1988 Violin Sonata.
George Rochberg is today regarded as one of the most important American composers of the 20th Century and his list of published compositions is very impressive.

The third in our series which presents Beethoven's Violin Sonatas in their musical and social context, alongside works by Beethoven's contemporaries and pupils. Here the op. 30 sonatas are joined by Franz Clement's Variations on Grétry's "Barbe Bleu" for solo violin. A magnificent performance and new recording at medium price.

Beethoven’s three sonatas for Piano and Violin Op. 30 were dedicated to Tsar Alexander 1st. He had been educated by his grandmother Catherine the Great and was considered to be a true child of the Enlightenment.
The three manuscripts of the Op. 30 sonatas are among the most expressive of the surviving original material of Beethoven’s chamber music. These works were a direct result of the collaboration with Beethoven’s violin teacher, Ignaz Schuppanzigh - who was in fact the dedicatee of the Op. 12 sonatas. The final piece on the CD was written by another significant influence on Beethoven’s work - Franz Clement. This is the third disc in a series that sets Beethoven’s sonatas in their social and musical context - in this case the context being Schuppanzigh.

tracks:
Beethoven: Violin Sonata in A major, op. 30 no. 1 Violin Sonata in C minor, op. 30 no. 2 Violin Sonata in G major, op. 30 no. 3 J. M. Clement: Variations on Grétry's opera "Barbe Bleu"

Kreutzer Quartet
The Kreutzer Quartet has forged an enviable reputation as one of the Europe's most dynamic and innovative string quartets. They are the dedicatees of numerous works, and over many years have forged creative partnerships with composers including Sir Michael Tippett, David Matthews, Michael Finnissy, Judith Weir, and Haflidi Hallgrimsson. They have a particularly strong relationship to a cross-section of leading American composers, having collaborated intensively with George Rochberg in the last few years of his life, as long as working closely with figures as Elliott Schwartz, and the prolific symphonist Gloria Coates. As recording artists they have won critical acclaim for their discs on the Naxos, Metier, and Chandos labels. They are Artists in Association at Quartet at York University, and at Wiltons Music Hall. Their work in collaboration with art galleries has garnered much attention, and large audiences, particularly their annual residency at the Tate Gallery, St Ives.
