Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set titled “International Tchaikovsky Competition. Phonographic Documents (1958-1986)”.
The first ever Soviet music tournament instantly became one of the world’s most prestigious competitions. The piano jury was chaired by Emil Gilels for many years, while David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich headed the violin and cello juries, respectively. Alexander Sveshnikov, an outstanding choirmaster and chancellor of the Moscow Conservatory, was a chairman of the vocal jury. For the fifty years of its existence, the Tchaikovsky Competition discovered numerous distinguished performers such as Van Cliburn, Vladimir Ashkenasi, Grigory Sokolov, Eliso Virsaladze, John Lill, Michail Pletnev, Viktor Tretiakov, Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Spivakov, Oleg Kagan, Natalia Gutman, Elena Obraztsova, Maria Gulegina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yevgeny Nesterenko and Paata Burchuladze to name but a few. The set captures the brightest moments of eight Tchaikovsky Competitions in all categories. The recordings, including a number of never-before-released ones, were made immediately during the competition auditions
and at the prize-winners’ recitals. The release is dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the great Russian composer. |

Frédéric Chopin’s etudes are a unique combination of virtuoso technique and artistic supertasks. It is not without reason that no compulsory programme of any international competition can do without them. Each of the etudes is an ‘exercise’ in one of the types of piano technique, while sounding like a bright and image-bearing piece.
The twelve etudes of Op.10 were composed during 1828-1832 and dedicated to Franz Liszt. The twelve etudes of Op.25 were published in 1836. Nearly all pianists of the world have Chopin’s etudes in their repertoire, but only a few of them have the courage to play both of the opuses in their entirety.
Firma Melodiya presents twenty-four etudes by Chopin performed by Vladimir Ashkenazy, one of the greatest pianists of modern times. What makes these recordings especially interesting is that they were made in 1959 by the then 22-year-old pianist. With his world triumphs still ahead (although Ashkenazy had received a second prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels), Ashkenazy’s pianism already appears in full possession of virtuosic and artistic mastery.

Subcollection: Piano and Orchestra22 October, 2011 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt (1811-1886), the brilliant virtuoso pianist, genius composer, renowned educator and music critic, one of the brightest stars of the musical Olympus of the 19th century. As a daring innovator, Liszt stirred up a revolution in both the art of piano playing and composing. Being a classic of the Hungarian national music who imbibed cultural tradition of other countries, Liszt exerted influence upon on the course of European music in general. "If not for Liszt, the fate of new music would have been different," wrote music critic Vladimir Stasov. The piano remained Liszt's favourite instrument throughout his artistic life. His innovative approach to the instrument showed up in his orchestral and symphonic interpretation. He created a multitude of virtuosic transcriptions of his own works and ones composed by others authors such as operatic numbers and songs by Schumann, symphonies by Beethoven. "In the span of its seven octaves, [the piano] embraces the range of a whole orchestra, and the ten fingers of a single man suffice to render the harmonies produced created by the concurrence of a hundred musicians," wrote Liszt. In the field of symphonic music, the composer created a whole new genre - single movement symphonic poem (Tasso, Les préludes, Orpheus, Prometheus and others). This release dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Liszt's birth includes compositions by Franz Liszt performed by some of the best musicians such as Alexander Slobodyanik (his recording of a Hungarian Rhapsody and Piano Sonata in B minor brought him a Franz Liszt award in Hungary, in 1976), Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Ashkenazi, Gleb Akselrod, Mark Ermler, Lazar Berman, Vladimir Ovchinnikov and Kirill Kondrashin.
