Over the last decade The Mühlfeld Ensemble has played a leading role in commissioning new music featuring the clarinet- particularly from English composers. On this new release it presents five of the best works by composers of different generations.
Elisabeth Lutyens (1906-1983) wrote film music for Hammer horror movies to pay the rent but in her concert music was adventurous and visionary. This was especially true of her later years where she developed a style that was spare and poignant as can be seen in her Trio (1979). |

Subkolektion: Oboe Janet Craxton (1929-81) founded the London Oboe Quartet with Perry Hart (violin), Brian Hawkins (viola) and Kenneth Heath (cello) in 1968, and later with Charles Tunnell (cello) after Kenneth Heath's death in 1977. During the twelve years of its existence the Quartet played at most of the major UK music festivals and made frequent BBC broadcasts, from which these recordings are taken. Janet Craxton was always a champion of new music, and the Quartet commissioned five of the six works on this CD, as well as music by Neil Sanders, Alan Rawsthorne, Oliver Knussen, John Exton and John McCabe.
A previous Oboe Classics CD, An English Renaissance, celebrated Leon Goossens with a number of works inspired by his oboe playing. In the notes for that CD George Caird commented that in the generation following Goossens „the oboe playing of Janet Craxton should be singled out as the torch-bearer for music for oboe and strings. But that, and the composers who wrote for her, is another story.“ |

Kolektion: Chamber MusicSubkolektion: Chamber Ensemble Signum Classics are proud to announce The Brunel Ensemble's first disc on Signum Classics - Red Leaves.
No ensemble other ensemble is as committed to the performance of such works from all decades of the twentieth century. Formed in 1992, the group gives thrilling performances under Christopher Austin’s inspired direction.
John McCabe’s Red Leaves was commissioned by the European Community Chamber Orchestra and the 1991 Istanbul Festival. Composer Malcom Williamson studied with Elisabeth Lutyens (as did Robert Saxton) and he was Master of the Queen’s Music until his death in 2003. One of Lutyens’ first major success was a setting of Rimbaud, O Saisons, O Chateau encored at the first performance in 1947 - but noteable for having previously been turned down by the BBC as unsingable!
The McCabe and Williamson pieces are linked by the common theme of nature, the latter being inspired by Australian landscape and history. It was commissioned for the 150th Anniversary of the State of Victoria. For his anniversary greeting of 1986 on the occasion of his colleague’s half century, Robert Saxton presented his Birthday Piece for Richard Rodney Bennett. In which he chose in time-honoured manner to extract from Bennett’s name the musical notes available as a thematic cipher, and to fashion them after his own manner into a bracing invention for strings.Red Leaves is a disc of modern works by British composers. |
