Composer: PONCHIELLI, Amilcare ((1834-1886)) |
| His/her life: Amilcare Ponchielli was born Paderno, Italy, August 31, 1834. He entered the Milan Conservatory in his ninth year and stayed there nine years. While still a student he wrote an operetta, Il Sindaco Babbeo, in collaboration with three other students.
His studies ended, he became an organist in Cremona, and then a bandmaster in Piacenza. During this period he wrote his first opera, I promessi sposi, introduced in Cremona in 1856.
For the opening of the Teatro dal Verme in Milan in 1872, Ponchielli was commissioned to write an opera. For this occasion he revised I promessi sposi which was received to much acclaim. His next opera, Le due gemelle, produced by La Scala in 1873, was also well received.
Ponchielli became world famous with La Gioconda, introduced at La Scala on April 8, 1876. The opera was a triumph at its premiere and it was highly successful when heard throughout Europe. None of the operas Ponchielli wrote after La Gioconda was able to repeat either the popular success or the consistently high level of dramatic and musical interest of that work.
In 1881, Ponchielli was appointed maestro di cappella of the Bergamo Cathedral, and from 1883 on he was professor of composition at the Milan Conservatory.
His operas are: I promessi sposi (1856;) La Savoiarda (1861, revised as Lina, 1877;) Roderico (1863;) La stella del monte (1867;) Le due gemelle (1873;) I Lituani (1874, revised as Alduna, 1884;) La Gioconda (1876;) Il figliuol prodigo (1880;) Marion Delorme (1885;) Bertrando de Bornio; I mori di Valenza (completed by A. Cadora.)

Collection: Opera Collection Subcollection: Opera Emil Ivanov has long become a famous name among the world tenor elite. He began his career in the Sofia National Opera to join soon after that the cast of the Vienna Staatsoper, on whose bill he is currently present. Vienna, on its part, was his launching board to the greatest opera stages and festivals in Europe and the United States, where he sang many times at the Metropolitan. Emil Ivanov enchants the audience with his sound, voluminous tenor, with his brilliant pitches and beautiful timbre. He is an artist of varied repertoire including mainly parts of 19th century operas by Verdi, Meyerbeer, Massenet, Bizet. Most outstanding among his performances are these from "veristic" works by Puccini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Giordano. For this CD the singer has chosen mainly arias which express in the best manner his musical, vocal and emotional nature.

Collection: Orchestral Works Subcollection: Orchestra The third CD begins with Ponchielli and Dance of the Hours from the popular opera "La Gioconda" (1876). Then follow two overtures by the Austrian composer Franz von Suppe - "Beautiful Galathea" and "Leicht Kavallerie", Brahms' Hungarian Dances Nos 1, 5 and 6 (created during the period 1869-80). After that come the founder of the Czech national composers school Smetana and his symphonic poem The Moldau, and Weber - the founder of the German romantic and legendary-knights opera, with his famous Invitation to the Dance. The programme ends with one of the greatest masters of polyphonic music and founder of the classical type of oratorio - Haendel, who has written 32 oratorios, one of which is Judas Maccabaeus, an excerpt of which is included in this release. The CD thus features representatives of the pre-classical, classical and romantic periods, and some European national composers' schools. |
