Music from the Court of Johann Wilhelm van der Pfalz, duke of Jülich-Berg

Johann Wilhelm of Pfalz-Neuburg was born April 19, 1658 in Düsseldorf. His grandfather, Wolfgang Wilhelm of Pfalz-Neuburg, was given the important dukedom of Jülich-Berg at the beginning of the 17th Century. His father, Philipp Wilhelm of Pfalz-Neuburg, ensured a complete education for his son, who, even at an early age, showed a significant interest in the arts. Music and the Fine Arts became Johann Wilhelm’s dominant passions.
He married archduchess Maria Anna Josepha of Austria in 1678, which gained him access to the rich musical culture of the Emperor’s court. On August 1, 1679, he became the regent of the dukedom of Jülich-Berg with capitals in both Jülich and Düsseldorf. Düsseldorf was the focal point of his reign; he helped develop it to become a center of art and culture. After the death of his first wife in 1689, Johann Wilhelm married Anna Maria Luisa de Medici in 1691. After the death of his father in 1690 he became the Elector of Pfalz and one of the distinguished leaders of his era. Johann Wilhelm shared his passion for art and music with his new wife. The opera performances during Carnival in Düsseldorf in the years following 1690 became legendary. The court orchestra, which Johann Wilhelm formed, could compete with Imperial standards, and was admired by contemporaries in 1711 at the Imperial Election in Frankfurt. In the words of a guest of the Düsseldorf court, “[the orchestra was] a felicitous lot of fine artists.” The amount of money Johann Wilhelm invested in courtly show was not atypical for its time, but he did receive criticism from his fellow Electors. Johann Wilhelm dreamt of being named a King.

The names of the composers whose works are featured on this album come from different periods of the world music culture. Each of them is a great artist of his time and one of the heights in the historical process of art's development. Arcangelo Corelli (1653 - 1713) was a remarkable violinist and composer, the founder of the Roman violin school who devised the classical fundamentals of the style and technique of violin playing. Corelli's artistic legacy is quite extensive. Unlike most of his contemporaries, the composer worked within the sphere of instrumental genres. He composed numerous orchestral соncerti grossi, violin and basso continuo sonatas, and trio sonatas. Both in orchestral and ensemble music, he showed his worth as a prominent connoisseur of the violin's richest capabilities. The famous Italian Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) infamously said, "I can write a concerto faster than a copyist writes out the orchestral voices!" A striking quickness and ease of Vivaldi's composing process was an organic element of the composer's enormous professionalism he conquered the world of music with. The artistic legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) is unbounded indeed. His contribution to all music genres can never be overestimated. It is impossible to name a theatre company, a solo player, a vocalist, a choir, a symphony orchestra or a chamber ensemble that has never performed Mozart's masterpieces.¨

Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set dedicated to the 75th anniversary of one of the outstanding contemporary Russian conductors, Dmitri Kitayenko.

“Today he can be undoubtedly considered one of the five or six best conductors of the world. This phenomenon is out of the ordinary”, Herbert von Karajan wrote about Kitayenko after the young Soviet conductor gave a brilliant performance at the international competition in Vienna, receiving the second prize and winning the hearts of the Viennese audience and media. Evgeny Svetlanov also greeted his younger colleague on the pages of the Soviet press as a talented and promising conductor.

A graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory who also completed a postgraduate course at the Moscow Conservatory and a training course at the Vienna Academy of Music, Dmitri Kitayenko had a brilliant start to his conducting career. From 1976 to 1990 he headed the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. Under his leadership the celebrated orchestra substantially expanded its repertoire and actively toured.

During recent decades, the conductor worked with the orchestras of Western Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States and regularly recorded.

This 6 CD set includes recordings made by Dmitri Kitayenko in the studio and in the concert hall between 1975 and 1987 with the orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire included showcases the conductor’s stylistic diversity and highest mastery.

These recordings will be of interest to those who remembers Kitayenko’s performances of the past years and to a new generation of listeners as well.
