Salvatore Sciarrino, probably Italy's most important living composer, accepted a commission from the Italian state broadcaster RAI to compose the music for a 100-part TV series of the Divina Commedia. At the same time, he also created an orchestral version for the concert hall: Sui poemi concentrici for Soloists and Orchestra. The duration shrank to only a tenth of the original 15 hours, but the size of the forces remained the same, with the exception of the choir.
